Royal night at Royden as Queens become Five A Side Cup Kings
Queens Royal made it a night to remember as their "A" team defeated their "B" team in the Five A Side Cup Final at Royden Hall on Saturday night. In front of a decent crowd at the excellent Royden Hall venue Queens Royal "A" defeated West Kirby Victoria "A" by 2 shots in an exciting Semi Final encounter which saw Royal take the first 3 cards and build up a 19 shot lead. Les Henderson 21-11, Paul Saville 21-13 and Frank O'Neill 21-20 were the 3 Royal winners and it seemed the match was already over for the Vics but a fine 21-14 win for Anthony Thompson reduced the deficit to 12 points and with Matthew Gilmore lying 20-07 up against Peter Milnes, it seemed that West Kirby had once again pulled the rabbit out of the hat to snatch victory from defeat. Peter Milnes however proved to be an unwilling rabbit and after Matty had opened up the end by hitting is own wood a yard away from the jack, PM capitalised to add a second counting wood and secure victory for Queens Royal. Despite Matty's fine 21-11 win, Royal progressed into the Final 88 shots to 86 and 3 winners to 2. The second Semi Final saw 2nd Division Sandridge "B" take on Queens Royal "B" and despite a gallant effort from the Sandridge team Royal had five winners and recorded a 105 - 63 victory. Two 21-09 victories for Mathew Cunliffe and Brian Leonard added to Eddie Dutton's 21-18, Steve Scott's 21-15 and Mike Nelson's 21-12 wins proved too hot for the Sandridge team but they can still bask in their Harold Jones Cup victory from earlier in the season on this same green. Mark Bunting proved to be the best Sandridge performer on the night keeping pace with Eddie Dutton right up until 18 across before Eddie clinched victory with 3 singles to edge a fine game 21-18. The Final saw Queens Royal "A" team take on their "B" team in another keenly contested affair. The "B" team stormed into an early lead with the first two winners and looked to be on their way to upsetting the rankings before the "A" team bounced back to clinch an eventual 4 shot victory. Steve Scott gave a masterly performance on a green he seems to excell on with a brilliant 21-12 victory against Les Henderson, running out from 13-12 up. Eddie Dutton then defeated Frank O'Neill 21-20 in arguably the best match of the night. Eddie had built up an 11-06 lead before Frank responded to forge ahead 16-12 and then 20-17 but Eddie was undaunted and managed a double and two singles to snatch victory away from Frank 21-20. The "A" team had to respond quickly and Geoff Lynch provided a Captain's performance defeating his opposite Captain, Mike Nelson 21-14 in what was a close encounter at 13-12 to Geoff before he finally produced three two's in four ends to race to victory. Craig Saville bounced back from his semi final defeat to post a fine 21-16 winning card against Mathew Cunliffe in a match he took control of after the scores were level at 09-09 across at one stage. With the last pairing now on the green Queens Royal "A" led by two shots and a fitting "finale" saw Peter Milnes draw a 6 inch wood to finally defeat Brian Leonard 21-19 after a terrific struggle between the two players. Peter took an early 12-07 lead only for Brian to respond to go into a possible match winning lead at 15-12. Peter pulled back to 15 across and 16 across only for Brian to seemingly be winning the match again at 19-16 but Peter proved to be the ace in the pack and delivered an unanswered run to clinch both his match and the cup 21-19. This was a terrific match and provided a fitting end to our team competitions in 2011. A delighted Queens Royal "A" team captain Geoff Lynch thanked the Royden Hall Club for hosting the event and the Executive Committee for their hard work throughout the season and finally all the Queens Royal players present for a great end to season. I think a drink or two might have been downed after the match as Geoff did indicate that all the players should retire to the bar to celebrate. Thanks go to all the Royden Hall members for allowing us to once again stage this Final at their venue and to all the players, spectators, markers, measurers and committee members who turned up on the night. Sorry about the quality of the pictures below, I had the wrong setting on my phone.

West Kirby Victoria & Wallasey RBL "A" confirmed as Champions
Congratulations to West Kirby Victoria who have been confirmed as Division One Winners for the 11th consecutive year. Congratulations also to Wallasey Royal British Legion "A" team who have won the Division Two Title for the second time in three years. Queens Royal were Division One Runners Up with Liscard clinching the Runners Up spot in Division Two. Manor Road "C" team still need 4 points from their final match of the season ( home v Wallasey RBL "A") to avoid relegation to Division Three. Grange will be relegated if Manor Road achieve their required 4 home winners. Grange would be relegated despite finishing on the same number of points as Quarry Vikings "C" team because they have fewer match aggregate win points.

2011 Five A Side Cup Draw details
The draw and venues for the 2011 Five A Side Cup competition can be seen below. The handicapping format for this years competition has been changed from previous years with the Individual Handicap of each player now going onto the scorecard instead of the combined handicaps going on the result sheet. For example if a player "A" off a handicap of 2 is drawn against a player "B" off a handicap of 6, the the scores go on the card at the start of their match. All matches will be 21up meaning player "B" only having to score 15 more points to win his match as against player "A" having to score 19 more points. Clubs will receive their match sheets etc tomorrow. Every Team Captain will receive a handicap sheet for all their clubs players from their club Secretary along with match details and they must keep that sheet for the whole time they remain in the competition. Good luck to all teams and hopefully we can have some rain free nights to enjoy the bowls.

A reminder of the possible League set up for 2012
I would like to remind all clubs of the decision we took earlier in the year about the Divisional set up for 2012. At present we have 30 teams playing in 3 Divisions and if things remain the same, the notice I sent to all clubs, seen highlighted in yellow below, will remain in place. Hopefully we will not have to go down this route with 1 or 2 Clubs showing interest in joining us for 2012 but until anything becomes official, the following posting stands.
Sunday February 27th
Changes to League Set Up for 2012
After the late withdrawal of Sacred Heart "B" from our Association, we are now down to 30 teams and if we do not attract any more teams for the 2012 season, the Executive Committee have decided that rather than having an imbalanced League set up for the 2012 season, we will have Three Divisions of 10 teams instead. This does mean changes in promotion and relegation rules for the coming 2011 season. TWO teams will still be relegated from Divisions One and Two but only ONE team will be promoted from Divisions Two and Three. Prize money will still stay at the same level as 2010 with the Champions of Divisions One, Two and Three receiving £100 each and the Runners Up in all three divisions receiving £75 each. Should we lose any more teams from the Association before the start of the 2012 season plans will be made for the running of a Two Division set up. There have already been suggestions put to the Executive Committee for other possible League scenarios for the 2012 season and if any members wish to add any further ideas they should do so via their Club Secretary in time for our A.G.M. in November. As it stands however our current decision of Three Divisions of 10 teams is what we are planning for.

League Season almost completed
Unbelievably the 2011 League season has almost been completed with just one full week of Division One and Two Fixtures to complete along with 3 still to be re-arranged Division One fixtures. The League situations so far are as follows:
Division One
West Kirby Victoria need 1 point from their away match at Manor Road "B" to ensure they win the Title. Queens Royal could theoretically still win the League if they take maximum points from their two remaining fixtures at Quarry Vikings and home to Great Meols if West Kirby somehow had 12 losers at Manor Road "B". I think Royal Skipper, Mike Nelson has already ordered 12 Hex Dolls to place alongside the Manor Road green for that match !! Harrison Park and Magazine play against each other on Tuesday with Park needing 8 home winners to avoid finishing bottom of the table. If Magazine can get 5 winners they will finish above Harrison Park by virtue of the Aggregate points collected during the season. Unfortunately both clubs will be dropping down into Division Two next season unless Great Meols and Gladstone have an absolute disastrous two final matches and don't collect 3 and 7 points respectively in their fixtures.
Division Two
Wallasey R.B.L. "A" team, like West Kirby Victoria need 1 point from their home fixture against Hoylake Central "B" on Tuesday to clinch the Title. Liscard and Hoylake Central "B" are vying for the runners up position with both teams completing their fixtures on Tuesday, Liscard playing at home must be favourites. Wallasey R.B.L. "B" team have unfortunately been relegated to Division Three but again we have a very tight situation between Grange and Quarry Vikings "B" for the other relegation place. Grange need at least 8 home winners against Quarry on Tuesday to stay in the Division but if Quarry gain 5 winners or more they will stay up virtue of more aggregate points. As with the situation in the First Division Manor Road "C" and Poulton are not mathematically clear of relegation but should be able to garner enough points due to Grange and Quarry playing each other.
Division Three
This Division has now been completed with Marine Park "A" worthy Champions and Royden Hall finishing as Runners Up just 7 points adrift.
Friday August 12th
Marine Park "A" are Division Three Champions
Congratulations to Marine Park "A" team in winning the Division Three Title after defeating Moreton RBL "B" away from home on Tuesday.

Manor Road "A" defy the rain to claim Wallasey News Cup
On a difficult night for bowls at Harrison Park last night, Manor Road "A" team defeated Queens Royal by 8 shots after seemingly, at one stage, coasting to victory. A controversial handicap of 48 shots to Manor Road was the cause for much debate on the night but a closer look at the cards handed in showed that Queens Royal were in fact ahead in a lot of the matches without actually managing to finish the job off. In pouring rain on a green that still seemed to be running well the first 4 cards were shared with two winners each and Queens Royal reducing the deficit down to 42. Queens Royal's Les Henderson won 21-16 but was winning 18-07 before a fight back from Barry Smith. Geoff Lynch posted an excellent 21-11 winning card after being 09-10 down to Les Jones. Manor Road replied with great a 21-20 win for Bill Astles after pulling back a 15-19 deficit to Eddie Dutton. Peter McGregor's fine 21-13 win for Manor Road, after getting off to an 11-0 start against Steve Scott saw the scores (including the handicap) 117-75 to Manor Road. Manor Road really pushed on in the middle four with three winners. Sandra Astles won a ding dong tussle with Matt Cunliffe 21-20 and Ken Howard had another hard fought match against Colin Saville eventually handing in a 21-18 winning card. Ron Hitchmough produced another fight back win for Manor Road, defeating Brian Leonard 21-19 from 10-15 down. Royal's Steve Clayton reversed the trend with a 21-17 win against Joyce Stead from 09-13 down. After eight blocks Manor Road were still 44 shots ahead 197-153 and seemingly singing in the rain. How quickly things change in bowls though, with the colourful Frank O'Neill once again taking centre stage with a stunning 21-04 win for Queens Royal, quickly followed by an excellent 21-06 victory for Peter Milnes. The Queens Royal choir were suddenly heard around the green singing Mike Nelson to a 21-16 victory over the experienced George Stead. At this stage Manor Road were only leading by 7 shots with the last pairing on the green and with Craig Saville leading Ken Stocker 17-10 the scores were actually now level. Cometh the hour cometh the man they say and Ken pulled things round to Manor Road again by pulling back to 17 across before then going on to win 21-20 and amid joyous scenes from the Manor Road players and supporters the match was won 244-236. This was an unbelievably strange final with both teams pulling back big deficits in matches before an unexpectedly exciting finish saw Manor Road triumph by 8 shots. A delighted Manor Road Captain, Ian Mitchell, thanked Queens Royal for the excellent way in which the match was played and thanked his team for their performance in claiming the cup. He did also mention, tongue in cheek, that without himself and Dave Wilson producing 10 points between them, the match would have been lost. Our Chairman Mike Costall, as usual thanked all concerned, including Harrison Park and the soaking wet Referee, Peter Fishwick, for helping stage this Final.

Super Sandridge's Seven winners Stun Central
Second Division Sandridge stunned First Division Hoylake Central in the Presidents Cup Final last night, to deservedly take the Cup for the first time in their history. In front of a large crowd at a sun drenched Royden Hall, Hoylake had managed to pull back 30 of the 36 shot handicap after the first four blocks with 2 excellent 21-08 victories for Paul Gartland and Tommy Walker. Chris Hegg posted a fine 21-14 winning card for Central before Sandridge hit back with a tight 21-18 victory for Barbara McBurney in the best match of the night. A dire performance from Hoylake Central Captain, Peter Dodd saw Jim O'Connor start an inspired spell for Sandridge with an excellent 21-09 winning display. Colin Cousins 21-13 and Phil Taylor 21-17 piled on the agony for Central with fine wins for Sandridge. Keith Etches managed to bring Hoylake back into the match with a great 21-08 winning scorecard but after eight blocks, the writing was on the wall. with Sandridge leading by 17 shots 158-141. Despite a top class 21-11 victory for Central's Ken Palin, Sandridge piled on the agony in the back four with fine wins for Naureen Bunting 21-16, Rick Murray 21-13 and John Cosgrove 21-13. Sandridge eventually turned in a wonderful team performance to lift the Cup 232-204 and win by 28 shots. A delighted Sandridge Captain, Barry Nixon, received the Cup from Association President, Keith Etches and thanked his team for an excellent performance. Association Chairman, Mike Costall thanked Royden Hall for allowing us to use their green for the Final and the Referee, Peter Fishwick and his wife Mary for selling our raffle tickets. He also thanked the measurers and markers and everyone who turned up to watch the Final on a great evening for Sandridge and Wallasey bowls. Referee, Peter Fishwick thanked both teams for the excellent way they contested this sporting match and stated it was a pleasure to Referee the match. Disappointed Hoylake Central Captain, Peter Dodd, did not have the opportunity to reply for his team but did walk round the green to congratulate every single Sandridge player and reserve after their excellent team performance. This was a great advertisement for Wallasey bowls and hopefully we will see similar at next week's Wallasey News Cup Final between Manor Road "A" and Queens Royal at Harrison Park No.1 green, 6-15pm start.
