Tremendous 28-03 victory for Wallasey in British Parks County Championship

The Wallasey Association County sides pulled off a stunning 28-03 victory over Warwickshire this afternoon to set themselves up for a crucial match against Yorkshire on Sunday July 18th. The home side completed a wonderful clean sweep of 12 winners( to win 14-0 in points) which included 6 single figure winners, Chris Barton 21-04, James Fitzpatrick 21-07, Dave Gilmore 21-04, Allan Bainbridge 21-08, Anthony Thompson 21-03 and Mathew Gilmore 21-05. The home score was a remarkable 252-114 giving the lads a 138 shot win. Home team skipper, Les Henderson, would like me to thank Mike Costall, Keith Etches, Colin Jones and Tommy Walker for all their help this afternoon in allowing the team to just get on with the playing of the match and not having to worry about any of the little details needing attention on the day. He would also like to let the away team know how much of a lift it gave to the home team listening to the brilliant results coming in from Warwickshire and would like to put on record how much he appreciated the support from all his team members, in getting around the green all afternoon, encouraging every one playing.                                                                                                                                                                                         The away side had a really good 11-03 points victory at Sutton Coldfield Royal British Legion with 9 winners out of the 12. After a difficult couple of days with late withdrawals and replacements having to be found, the team adapted to the conditions of the green really well with Geoff Lynch 21-05, John Devlin 21-05, George Stead 21-07 and John Lloyd 21-09 proving much too strong for their opponents. Chris Halsey bounced back from his disappointment at East Midlands with a fine 21-15 victory and special mention must go to two of our younger players, Mark Bainbridge and Steve Wharton Jnr. Mark pulled back from 12-17 down to win 21-19 and Steve, on debut, pulled back from 0-6 and 12-17 to also win 21-19, completing a happy father's day for dad Steve Snr, who also marked his card. Not such a good day however for yours truly, who, as a very late replacement for Frank O'Neill at number 12, soon found myself 0-11 down before eventually just reaching double figures. Back to the paperwork I think !!! Once again my thanks go to the supporters who went to Sutton Coldfield this afternoon and helped us tremendously with card marking.

The 1st race will start at 8-30pm and hopefully everyone attending the Harold Jones Cup Final that night, will make their way back to Manor Road to support our Race Night. If you are one of the few people Tommy Walker has not caught up with in his quest to sell horses to, or indeed sponsor a race, don't worry, he is probably lurking around the next corner waiting to pounce. I would like to thank Ian Hazlehurst and the Birkenhead Parks Team for agreeing to sponsor one of our races and wish them luck in their fixture against Central Lancashire on Sunday. I will be sending out a flyer for the race night with the up to date league tables next week.

The results from last Tuesday's Presidents Cup first round matches have now been updated including the remarkable Marine Park "B" v West Kirby Victoria match. West Kirby Victoria, having conceded 120 points to their opponents, courtesy of the handicappers, managed a breath taking 241 -240 victory with their last bowler on the green having to limit his opponent to 13 shots to enable his side to go through to the next round. All the results can be seen via the Presidents Cup page accessed via the team competition page in the table above.

Veterans Individual Merit Cancelled

It is with great regret that I have to inform members that the Veterans Individual Merit competition scheduled for the 22nd June (qualifying) and the 27th June (Finals Night) has had to be cancelled. Incredibly in a free to enter competition, in which we do pay out prize money, the number of entries is so low we cannot go ahead with the competition. One of the main reasons we receive from our members for not entering our competitions is that it is always the same people who win the competition, either from Queens Royal or West Kirby Victoria,. This is not so with the Veterans Merit as only one person has actually won this competition more than once since it started in 1996, that person being Bob Edwards from Harrison Park (a deserved 3 time winner). The Executive Committee will be discussing whether or not it is worth running Individual Competitions in 2011 at one of our monthly meetings in the near future and we would welcome any input from our members on this issue. I can only apologise to the few people who did enter the Veterans Merit this year for the cancellation of the event.

Wallasey Merit Postponed

Due to a lack of entries, we have had to postpone the Wallasey Individual Merit Competition due to be held this coming Sunday. This competition will now be held at a later date during the season. It seems that this competition was scheduled too close to last Sunday's Park's Merit and therefore the entries are down. I apologise to any bowlers inconvenienced by this decision but with very few entries it is not possible to carry on this week.
