Semi Final Draw

North Staffordshire v Yorkshire

Wallasey v Greater Manchester

Monday July 25th

Pantomime end to excellent day's bowling.

The British Parks C.G.B.A. Veterans County Team Knockout competition held in Wallasey yesterday, was reduced to a pantomime after East Midlands "A" team conceded the Final to South Yorkshire "B" team. East Midlands “A” farcically conceded the Final to South Yorkshire “B” because of their bus driver needing to be back in his depot by 10-00pm. In my opinion an absolutely ridiculous decision made after both East Midlands “A” and “C” teams had contested their semi final match. An excellent day’s bowling, enjoyed by over 140 bowlers who had taken part, was reduced to an unbelievable farce with the East Midland’s players and supporters leaving the Final venue as the South Yorkshire players were arriving. East Midlands’ explanation that the costing would have been raised dramatically had they had an extra driver was in my opinion unacceptable because the timings of this competition are at best estimates as is always the case. East Midlands having entered 3 teams in this event should have organised different travel arrangements to ensure their participation in the Final. The Wallasey Association have entered 3 teams in this competition for the last 4 years and have organised travel arrangements to Burton On Trent, Chesterfield (twice) and Birmingham, leaving at 7-00am in the morning and not knowing what time we might return home. East Midlands, in my opinion, should not have entered the competition knowing they had a deadline to keep with travel, last years final finished at 8-45pm. They showed no respect for the teams they had knocked out earlier, their Final opponents or the organiser of the competition with their totally unexpected decision after their semi final match. Birkenhead & District won group "C" to qualify for a semi final against South Yorkshire "B" and the Wallasey "C" team lost out in their qualifying group with a one shot defeat by East Midlands "A" in their deciding match. The other 3 Wallasey teams entered yesterday all performed admirably and won at least one of their group matches with the "B" team winning two matches. Wallasey did have to enter a fourth team due to another late withdrawal by North Staffordshire just 3 days before the competition started.

Wallasey News Cup & Presidents Cup

The venues and handicaps for next week's semi finals of the above cups can now be seen via the team competition page in the above table.

Wednesday July 20th

British Parks Senior County Championship

Contrary to reports elsewhere, we have still had no official confirmation as to whether or not we have qualified to play Greater Manchester in the semi final on August 21st. I have requested the details from last Sunday's matches and am still awaiting the final league tables. Given the chaos within the Parks set up over the last few years, until we are officially informed we are through we can do nothing. When 3 wins out of 3 matches and 52 points is not enough to top the group all kinds of scenarios spring to mind. The continual re-draws of groups etc. over the last few years, proving my point.

Tuesday July 19th

Wallasey News Cup & Presidents Cup

The results from last week's  matches in the Wallasey News Cup & Presidents Cup have now been updated as have the draws the Semi Finals of both  competitions. They can be accessed via the team competition page in the above table. There is a handicap meeting tonight for those Semi Final matches.

Sunday July 17th

The first semi final will be at Manor Road Bowling Club starting at 4-00pm or as near as possible after, with the second semi final at the Lower Green at Quarry Vikings Bowling Club also starting at 4-00pm or as near as possible after. The Final will take place at the Top Green at Quarry Vikings Bowling Club starting at 5-30pm or as near as possible after. Spectators are more than welcome to attend any of these matches. Wallasey will be fielding 3 teams in the event and Birkenhead & District will be fielding one team.

Wallasey overcome deluge and Birkenhead to take local honours and claim bragging rights

Continuous rain throughout the afternoon could not stop the top bowlers in Wirral producing two excellent matches this afternoon in Group "C" of the British Parks C.G.B.A Senior County Championship. Both Wallasey & Birkenhead went at it head to head with no quarter asked or given on two saturated greens at Quarry Vikings & Thingwall. Both sides had six winners each at the respective venues but Wallasey's home victory by 24 shots was to be the crucial factor, with Birkenhead only winning by 8 shots at their home match. The extra 3 points for the overall aggregate score giving Wallasey a 17-14  points victory to see them end the group stages on 51 points to Birkenhead's 44. The Group winners will depend on the result of the Cheshire-North Staffordshire match which also took place this afternoon, North Staffordshire having started the day on 33 points. The match at Quarry Vikings Lower green this afternoon was a real nip and tuck affair with both sides trading two winners each in the front four, middle four and back four. Despite the downpour both sides found the green running well down the hill but a lot slower going back up. Wallasey had two crucial big winners in the first four with Chris Barton 21-10 and Geoff Lynch 21-11 giving them an early 12 point advantage, despite good Birkenhead wins for John Hignett Jnr. (21-20) and Anthony O'Neill (21-12). In the middle four, two excellent 21-14 wins for Rob Fitzpatrick and Matthew Gilmore increased the margin for Wallasey to 19 points, with Mick Andrews (21-20) and John Roberts (21-14) replying for Birkenhead. Home Captain, Les Henderson powered to a brilliant 21-10 victory in the back four and combined with Lee Brocklebank's 21-16 victory, Wallasey ran out 225-201 winners after Steve Davies (21-15) and Nick Hughes (21-17) posted winning cards for Birkenhead. This match was a credit to both sides and both sets of players and supporters can be proud of their efforts today with plenty of good humoured banter being given and taken without any ill feeling whatsoever. I can only report from the scorecard of the away match as I was at Quarry Vikings this afternoon but Birkenhead had 5 winners from the first 7 blocks, John Finch (21-09), John Ellis (21-08), Mally Andrews (21-18), Geoff McAdam (21-09) and Darren Hankin (21-13) and with Wallasey replying through Karl Sherbrooke (21-18), Frank O'Neill (21-11) and Paul Saville (21-15) the scores after 8 blocks stood 149-120, a big 29 shot lead for Birkenhead. Wallasey fought back brilliantly though with three winners in the back four including two crucial single figure wins for Eddie Dutton (21-06) and Neil Sherbrooke (21-07). Steve Wharton Jnr. continued his liking for County Bowls with a hard fought 21-17 win and despite Nick Burridge's (21-09) excellent victory for Birkenhead the final victory margin for the home side was only 200-192 and not enough for the aggregate victory and the valuable 3 points extra. I would like to thank all the players at both venues, the Referees, measurers, markers (I marked 3 soaking wet cards myself) and especially the supporters who turned out in atrocious conditions to make this a great advert for bowls on Wirral. Commiserations to Birkenhead but as Robbie Hall said in his speech after the match at Quarry Vikings, Wallasey have earned the "Bragging Rights" until our next encounter.

Handbook Error, League Fixtures Tuesday July 19th

Judging by the number of phone calls I have received this week, I think everyone has noticed the error in the handbook for next weeks League Fixtures. Fixtures in the handbook scheduled for Thursday 19th July, should read Tuesday 19th July.  There is a full schedule of fixtures on Thursday 21st July as printed correctly in the handbook. Thanks to all the people who have taken the time to let me know of the error. Paul Saville obviously doesn't read the handbook or this post would have appeared sooner!!!!

Andy Wainwright kept his form going throughout a long day yesterday, to beat Fred Arnell 21-08 in the Final of the Wallasey Festival and deservedly win the trophy. 21 players turned up at Central Park for the first running of this event since Les Henderson won it in 2006. Andy beat Linda Mitchell 21-15 in his quarter final match before going on to beat Steve Hollywood 21-07 in the semi final.
