Ian Mitchell wins Veterans
Merit for a second time
On a scorching day at Wallasey Central park today, the
coolest man in town was Manor Road's Ian Mitchell, who repeated his 2009 success
by winning the Wallasey CGBA 2011 Veterans' Merit.
Mitchell's consistency throughout was key as he made his way to the final with a
21 - 12 in the quarters against Tony Cavanagh, and a semi final 21 - 7 against
Tommy Walker, who had accounted for Andy Wainwright in his quarter final, 21 -
18.
In the other half of the last eight, Queens Royal's Dave Croston eventually
posted a 21 - 19 win over Les Jones, in a marathon match in the mid-day sun,
going on to defeat Barry Hattersley in the semi - final, 21 - 16. Barry had
beaten Steve Hollywood 21 - 12 in his quarter final game.
In the Final, Mitchell quickly went into a 4-0 lead, which was to prove crucial.
He led 9-3, 12-6, and at 17-9 and lying 1 on, he ran into Croston's bowl and the
end resulted in 2 to his opponent. Ian counted one the next end to go 18-11, but
Dave rallied with 2 singles and a double to 15-18. He then played a front
toucher which looked unbeatable, only for Ian's last bowl to gently nudge bowl
and jack, and fall in to take the end. Another single to Ian for 20-15 was
countered by 2 singles to Dave to go 17-20. Dave lead a foot wood at the side
and lay 1 only for Ian's second bowl to play it out and take the trophy, 21-17.
That 4-0 lead for Ian at the outset had made the difference.
Chairman Mike Costall introduced Les Henderson, who donated the cup some years
ago, to make the presentation to Ian.

Superb but close 16-15 win for
Wallasey against North Staffordshire
The Wallasey C.G.B.A. British Parks Senior County
Championship campaign continued on a high yesterday, with a closely fought 16-15
victory against North Staffordshire. In the home leg at a superb Manor Road
green, Wallasey had 11 winners with Peter Milnes. Chris Barton and Paul Saville
all producing excellent 21-07 victories towards a 249-167 victory. Away at the
tricky Fegg Hayes green in Stoke, Wallasey could only manage three winners but
Lee Brocklebank's 21-18 victory, Steve Wharton Jnr.'s 21-20 win from 12-19 down
and Tommy Walker's exciting 21-18 winning card were all important to the
eventual overall 16 points to 15 points victory for Wallasey. This win keeps
Wallasey at the top of the group "C" table and our next match on July 17th
against local rivals, Birkenhead is sure to be a lively affair, with both sides
battling for a semi final place in August.

Billy
"Jock" Little
I am sad to have to report that Billy
"Jock" Litlle has passed away in hospital on Wednesday aged 90. He was one
of the most consistent bowlers on the Wirral and a very competitive
opponent. In the 1980's he would qualify for finals day in virtually every
local competition His trade mark was a tartan cap with a red bobble & he
was a member of Heathbank Bowling Club along with George Spearing, George
Simmonds & Mark Shaw (to name a few) when they were a proper great club
side. Jock also played for the Manor Road Bowling Club and will be sorely
missed by family and friends alike. Funeral arrangements are not known at
this time but will be posted when received.

Wet, Windy & Wonderful. Charity
Day Success for St Vincents & Wallasey Bowls
A miserable day weather wise yesterday, was brightened by the
superb efforts of about 70 wonderful people at the 2011 Wallasey C.G.B.A. Annual
Charity Day at Manor Road Bowling Club. The George Gilmore Memorial Trophy match
between our President and Chairman select sides was played throughout in a
continuous downpour but all 59 players who took part in the match deserve
nothing but the highest praise for their efforts. All the players contributed £5
each to get a complete soaking and Andy Smith even did it twice!!! The St
Vincents School for the Blind and Partially Sighted will benefit from a cheque
for £535, a truly remarkable amount raised by all the bowlers and supporters on
the day. The match itself was won by the Presidents team this year but the
result was really about the money raised for all the unfortunate children at St Vincents who have to cope with limited or no eyesight at all. One of the
pleasing aspects of yesterdays match was that there were a number of ladies who
took part who don't actually play in League bowls but were playing with their
husbands or partners. Laura Thompson, Helen Lynch, Theresa Smith & Victoria
Smith can all brag about having shown their other halves how it should be done.
I would like to thank everyone who contributed yesterday to make this a
memorable day as the match could easily have been cancelled without your
willingness to play. I would also like to thank Ethel Gilmore for coming
along again to present the trophy to the winning team. Thanks also to Colin
Jones for allowing us to play the match on his hallowed turf at the Manor Road
Club and once again all the 59 soaking wet players.

Matt Gilmore wins 5th Parks
Merit Title
Matt Gilmore claimed his 5th Wallasey Parks Merit Title after
beating Ian Sherbrooke in the Final on Thursday at a fine Royden Hall green.
Matt won 4 matches during the evening to prove himself the best bowler on the
night once again. Having beaten the in form Neil Sherbrooke 21-10 in the first
round, Matt then had a tremendous 21-20 victory in an epic struggle against
James Fitzpatrick in round two. In the semi final Matt proved too good for John
Lloyd with an excellent 21-09 winning scorecard to move into the final against
his 4th club mate of the evening, Ian Sherbrooke. Ian had earlier beaten Colin
Saville 21-10 before overcoming Steve Wharton Jnr 21-15 in his quarter final
match. Ian then convincingly defeated Rob Fitzpatrick 21-07 before coming up
against a top form Matt Gilmore in the final. Matt was just too good on the
night, completing a 21-09 victory to claim his fifth Parks title and progress to
the British Parks CGBA National Merit finals day to be held in Cheshire on
August 14th. Ian Sherbrooke, John Lloyd and Rob Fitzpatrick also qualified for
the National Finals and we wish them all well in this event. Our thanks go to
the Royden Hall Bowling Club, Keith Etches, Mike Costall and Ken Palin for all
their work in making this another successful tournament for Wallasey Bowlers

Wallasey C.G.B.A. Charity Day,
Sunday June 12th at Manor Road
After the success of last years Charity Day format, in which
52 bowlers took part in a challenge mixed pairs match between a President's and
a Chairman's select sides, we are once again using this format for this years
event. The match will take place at Manor Road Bowling Club on Sunday June 12th
starting at 1-00pm. The Executive Committee will as usual provide an after match
buffet for all players and officials. This years beneficiaries will be the St
Vincents School for the Blind and Partially Sighted and hopefully we can raise a
decent sum of money for their funds on the day. I have listed below all the
players who played in last years match, all of whom generously donated a match
fee of £5 each on the day towards our grand total of £601 raised. If anyone
listed below would like to play in this years match or indeed if you read this
article and would like to play (don't worry if you do not have a partner, we can
always arrange one for you) then please let me know either by email at
petedodd35@hotmail.com or text or
phone to 07908 974768. Please do not ring my landline number in this
instance. I have already had confirmation from the players highlighted that they
wish to take part on June 12th and if you can let me know by Monday June 6th, I
can then organise teams, programmes etc, for the day. I must emphasise that the
parings below are only the ones from last season and do not have to be the same
this year, if you have a partner you wish to play with please let me know.

West Kirby Victoria win Harold
Jones Cup
West Kirby Victoria beat Hoylake Central by 7 shots last
night to win the Harold Jones Cup Final at Magazine Bowling Club. In a match
played in gale force winds at times, West Kirby's victory was well deserved,
having to overcome a handicap of 66 shots and posting 8 winners to Central's 4.
The Vics got off to a flyer with two excellent early single figure winners in
James Fitzpatrick 21-04 and Neil Sherbrooke 21-06. Paul Gartland replied with a
fine 21-14 victory for Central but Dave Gilmore immediately responded with a
21-14 victory for West Kirby. The middle matches saw Peter Dodd 21-17 and Rick
Keeley 21-19 produce fine winning displays for Central but once again the Vics
responded with 21-10 and 21-15 wins for Rob Fitzpatrick and Ian Sherbrooke
respectively. Thanks to the handicapping system, Hoylake Central still held a 25
shot lead going into the back four with hopes of producing a shock win but the
Vics superior fire power proved to be too much in the end despite Trevor Rodgers
pulling off the "win of the night", a brilliant 21-07 victory over Anthony
Thompson. John Lloyd raced to an excellent 21-05 win and Lee Brocklebank
came off with a fine 21-10 win leaving Matt Gilmore as last man for the Vics and
still having to pull back a ten shot lead for Hoylake Central. Not for the first
time, Matt came up trumps for the Vics, with an impressive 21-04 match winning
performance. West Kirby Captain, Malcolm paid tribute to his team after
receiving the cup from Association President, Keith Etches.

Wallasey C.G.B.A. Complete Hat
Trick
The Annual Challenge match between the Wallasey C.G.B.A. and
the Wirral Ladies C.B.A. for the Colin Jones Challenge Cup, saw the home team
complete a Hat Trick of victories but only after a brilliant and
entertaining evening's bowling. A good crowd turned out on the night at Manor
Road Bowling Club to witness some top class pairs matches and there was no
shortage of good natured banter flying round between the two teams and
supporters. Wallasey just managed to post a thirteen shot win 219-206, with 7
winners to the Ladies 5 winners. Wallasey got off to a flyer with Les Henderson
and Colin Saville producing, what turned out to be a match winning, 21-06
victory. Geoff Lynch and Craig Saville made up for last year, by eventually
overcoming Margaret Browning and Sandy Fleet 21-19 in an excellent match. Wirral
Ladies bounced back with Jean Clark and Joan Walker winning 21-17 (dish washing
duties for Tommy now I'm afraid) and Ann Brown and Anita Richardson proving just
too good in the end, with a fine 21-19 win against the Sherbrooke brothers Ian &
Neil. Two winning pairs each in the middle four kept the scores close with Brian
Leonard and Phil Vaughan 21-16 and Tony Cavanagh and Steve Wharton Jnr 21-08
posting victories for Wallasey. Wirral Ladies had two good winning cards, Mary
Fishwick and Mo Saville, showing no respect for the Wallasey President and
Secretary pairing of Keith Etches and Peter Dodd, winning 21-16 and Joan Jones
and Joyce Stead completing a very good 21-12 win against a strong Bill Atkinson
and Trevor Rodgers duo. With everything to play for, Wallasey proved just too
strong in the end with 3 winners from the last four matches. The awesome pairing
of Paul Saville and Anthony Thompson won 21-14 and Matty Cunliffe and Barry
Smith just scraped home 21-20 in a cracking match. Wirral Ladies responded with
a terrific performance from the "Ladies of the Match", Margaret Gard and Lynsey
Gorman, who overcame a couple of "Homesters" 21-08 in their match. In almost
complete darkness, the "one and only" Frank O'Neill and John Lloyd finally
overcame Sandra Astles and Joan Dewhurst, in another fine match, 21-18 to leave
the scores at 219-206 to Wallasey. Once again this was a really entertaining an
sporting event and the an excellent buffet was enjoyed by all after the match.
Les Henderson and Colin Saville proved to be the "Men of the Match" for Wallasey
and I would like to thank everyone involved on the night, especially our two
Referees, Maggie Wheeler and Peter Fishwick.

Harold Jones Cup Final
The teams for tomorrow night's match have now been announced
and can be seen below. Hoylake Central will be trying to win their second Harold
Jones Cup in three years but face a difficult task against the, ten time
consecutive Division One winners, West Kirby Victoria. Fortunately this is not a
League match and Hoylake will have a 66 shot start thanks to the handicappers.
The toss for Jacks will be interesting after recent events concerning the two
Captains. Hopefully a good crowd can be tempted down to Magazine Bowling Club
for the 6-30pm start for what could turn out to be a close contest.

Wallasey C.G.B.A. v Wirral Ladies C.B.A.
The Annual Challenge match between the Wallasey C.G.B.A. and
the Wirral Ladies C.B.A. will take place this coming Wednesday, May 25th at
Manor Road Bowling Club, starting at 6-15pm. This is always an enjoyable and

the players and officials and hopefully the weather will have improved enough
for us to all enjoy what should be another close run match between the two
teams.

Six winners each but Moreton
R.B.L. "A" claim Sheppick Cup
An exciting and close run Sheppick Cup Final took place last
night at the Quarry Vikings Bowling Club, with Moreton R.B.L. "A" team finally
winning the Cup with an eight shot victory against Poulton. Both teams had 6
winners on the night but the Legion had their noses in front from the off with
three winners in the front four seeing them force an early 12 shot lead, which
proved to be crucial at the end of the night. Harry Easdown blazed an early
trail for Moreton RBL. with a stunning 21-04 victory, only to be met at the side
of the green as he was coming off, by Poulton's Dave Dyer after he had replied
with an excellent 21-05 win. Steve Spence 21-14 and Harold Davies 21-17
completed a successful front four for the Legion with vital victories to leave
the scores 68-56. The four middle matches were shared two apiece with the
Legion's Robert O'Connor 21-09 and Peter Limb 21-11 both posting convincing
winning cards with Poulton replying with an equally convincing 21-09 victory
from Ken Brierley and a tremendously hard fought 21-20 win by Margie Vickers.
The score after eight blocks stood at 139-118 for the Legion. Poulton's back
four set about the 21 shot deficit with relish, having 3 winners from the four
blocks but unfortunately, Frank Seagraves with a scintillating 21-06 win and
very close 21-18 wins by Ron Burrows and Dave Bibby were not enough as John
Norman's fine 21-13 victory saw him win by the final eight shot victory margin.
An excellent evening's bowling on a very good green was enjoyed by another
decent crowd on our second successive Thursday night Final. Association
President, Keith Etches presented the cup to a happy Moreton R.B.L. "A" team
captain, Ian Kendrick after the Chairman, Mike Costall had given his usual after
match presentation speech.

Sheppick Cup Final
The Sheppick Cup Final takes place tomorrow night, May
19th, at Quarry Vikings Bowling Club starting at 6-30pm. Moreton RBL "A" take on
Poulton in a scratch match and this promises to
be a very close fought match and I hope that the fact we have no scheduled
league matches on the night, means we can attract a fair sized crowd to come and
watch the Final. All our Cup Finals have been scheduled for Thursday nights this
year in response to requests from many of our members as to the unsuitability of
Saturday nights as a Finals night for various reasons. The two teams will line
up as below and they are reminded that the dress code, as on page 53 of our
current handbook, must be observed. Good luck to both teams.

Busy Month Ahead
We have a busy month of events coming up and hopefully the
weather will improve for us to complete them all on schedule. There are no
scheduled Wallasey C.G.B.A. or Wirral & District C.G.B.A. fixtures for any of
the dates selected and hopefully we can attract more of our members to support
these events.
