Relegation fight in Division One goes to last games this week
With the last few league games to be played this coming week, the relegation battle in Division One is still undecided. Any one of four teams could still take the dreaded drop with Queens Royal "B". Hoylake Central having completed their matches have 122½ points, Gladstone Squirrels have 119½ points with an away fixture against Sacred Heart to play next Friday. Sacred Heart also on 119½ points have a home fixture against Queens Royal "B" as well as the match against Gladstone Squirrels to complete their fixtures and maybe the most crucial fixture is Magazine away at Queens Royal "B" with Magazine now currently on 108 points after their latest fixture at Sacred Heart, needing 15 points to overhaul Hoylake Central and ensure safety.

Les Henderson wins Wallasey Merit Title
Queens Royal's Les Henderson won the 2008 Wallasey Individual Merit Title this afternoon with a fine 21-07 victory over West Kirby Victoria's Bill Atkinson in the Final at Marine Park. Les bowled brilliantly throughout the day with 5 excellent victories on the much improved greens at the Marine Park venue. His semi final match against Matt Gilmore was a high class contest with both bowlers on top form and Les consistently peppering the jack in a magnificent 21-14 win. Bill Atkinson's semi final against Dave Gilmore saw Bill take an early 12-02 lead with some brilliant round pegging down the edge of the green before the expected comeback by Dave saw the final score 21-15 in Bill's favour. Les had earlier defeated Ernie Gartland, Phil Vaughan and Tony Cavanagh to reach the semi final with Bill having beaten Paul Gartland and Jamie Powell to reach his semi. The Final saw Les take an early stranglehold with some fine bowling up and down the centre of the green with Bill having problems with adjusting to the pace and with Les not letting up on his accuracy a 21-07 winning score line was just reward his efforts and Les adds the Merit Trophy to the Wallasey Festival Trophy he holds from the 2006 season. Les received his Trophy from Association President , Keith Etches who has to be thanked for all his hard work in organising the event.

I have made an error in the total of points Magazine have accrued so far in Division One. The individual home and away points and the aggregate points are correct but instead of 102½ points they only have 100½. I apologise to Magazine Bowling Club for my error in addition, especially as every point is crucial to them in their fight against relegation and I have posted all their results and points gained for them to check.

Sacred Heart "A" win Wallasey News Cup
Sacred Heart "A" produced a fine team performance at Gladstone Squirrels Bowling Club tonight, to defeat Manor Road "A" by 14 shots in an excellent Wallasey News Cup Final. The handicappers saw fit to give Sacred Heart "A" a 36 shot start and after 4 blocks and two winners apiece, this lead had increased to 39 shots. Steve Smith posted an excellent early winning card for Sacred Heart with a tremendous 21-07 winning score line and Lynsey Gorman pulled back an early 0-7 deficit to eventually triumph 21-19. Manor Road's popular husband and wife pairing of Bill and Sandra Astles recorded 21-16 and 21-13 wins respectively to keep their side in the match. There were again two winners each in the middle four with Kath Davies 21-17 and John Sherlock 21-20 handing in winning cards for Sacred Heart but with Ron Hitchmough winning 21-20 and an excellent 21-07 victory by Jimmy Bunting being the Manor Road response, the overall score had been narrowed to 29 shots in Sacred Heart's favour. Once again there were two winners each in the back four and despite Dave Wilson's fine 21-09 win and Mathew Cunliffe's 21-12 win for Manor Road, John Crowther 21-20 and John Hollywood 21-16 did more than enough in there personal victories to keep Sacred Heart "A" in front at then end by 239-225. This was an excellent Final in sometimes trying wet conditions and with both teams having 6 winners each and with 3 matches going the full 21-20 distance and a 21-19 scorecard as well, the bowling was extremely competitive with Sacred Heart "A" the eventual worthy winners. Association Chairman, Mike Costall thanked both teams for the sporting spirit in which the final was played before asking Association President, Keith Etches to present the trophy to young Kye Gorman, the delighted Honorary Captain of Sacred Heart "A". There was a presentation of a basket of flowers to Mary Fishwick as a big thank you for her wonderful work during all our Cup Finals in raising a lot of money for the Association by selling the raffle tickets. Mary's Husband, Peter Fishwick has to be praised once again for his excellent Refereeing not just tonight, but throughout our season as a whole.

Great Meols finish runners up in Division Two
Great Meols, with an away 11-06 victory over Poulton on Thursday, have finally overcome Harrison Park "B", to finish Runners Up in the Division Two title race behind Champions Sandridge. Congratulations go to Great Meols on their return to the First Division next year.
Friday 22nd August
Bronze win Division Three Title
Bronze won the Division Three Title last night when their 10-06 home win against Great Float proved just too much for Hoylake Central "B" to overtake them, despite 2 big wins for Hoylake Central "B" this week. Bronze came out on top by 4 points and both teams will now be promoted back to Division Two after they both came down last year. Congratulations to both clubs on their efforts this season.
Friday 22nd August
Sandridge crowned Division Two Champions
Congratulations to Sandridge Bowling Club, who last night added the Wallasey C.G.B.A. Division Two Title to their Sheppick Cup Final and Stott Cup Final victories from earlier in the season. After losing out on promotion to Division One in a play off last season, going up as Champions this year is especially sweet for the club who only re-formed 2 seasons ago.

West Kirby Victoria win Division One Title for record 8th Consecutive Year
West Kirby Victoria have won the Wallasey C.G.B.A. Division One Title for a record 8th consecutive year thereby beating the old record of 7 consecutive wins by Marine Park set between 1965 and 1971. By beating Harrison Park away last Thursday, West Kirby Victoria cannot now be caught by any of their nearest challengers. Remarkably the Vics have not lost a League Game since May 6th 2004, when Manor Road "A" recorded an 8 shot home victory. The last time West Kirby Victoria lost a home game was on April 23rd 1997 losing by 30 shots to Premier "A". Love them or loathe them, West Kirby Victoria have to be congratulated on a truly outstanding achievement under the Captaincy of Malcolm Johnson throughout the successful 8 years. The Vics will represent Wallasey in the British Parks Team Knockout Championship to be held in Wallasey on Sunday September 14th.

Manor sink Vikings in downpour at Hoylake to win Presidents Cup
Manor Road "A" won the Presidents Cup last night in terrible conditions at Hoylake Central, with a 31 shot victory over Quarry Vikings "A". In a match started in light rain and strong winds, Manor Road had to overcome a 36 shot deficit courtesy of the handicappers and 2 early single figure winners for Manor Road in Chris Morrison 21-06 and Bill Astles 21-07 saw the deficit down to 7 straight away but Paul Johnson with a fine 21-14 victory for Quarry and with Mike Pilling managing to get to 19 against Peter McGregor meant that after 4 blocks the score was still in favour of the Vikings by 89-77. The rains really arrived for the middle four and conditions on the green made bowling very difficult but both sides produced some excellent ends for the small crowd to enjoy. With 3 close wins for Manor Road Jimmy Bunting 21-17, Sandra Astles 21-16 and George Stead 21-17 it seemed that Quarry were about to be sunk without trace but a fine 21-13 win for Quarry, by the youngest player in the match, Tom Stead had the score still in Quarry's favour 160-153 after eight blocks. Unfortunately for Quarry that was as good as it got for them as the heavens finally opened and Manor Road's back four all won to finally sink Quarry's hopes and fittingly it was Manor Road Skipper, Ian Mitchell who led the way with an excellent 21-07 victory, followed up by Ken Stocker 21-10, Mathew Cunliffe 21-13 and Allan Bainbridge 21-16 all producing fine winning cards. The final score saw Manor Road "A" victorious by 237- 206 and deserved winners of the Presidents Cup for the first time. At the trophy presentation Association Chairman, Mike Costall thanked the hosts Hoylake Central for their help in staging the match, the Referee, Peter Fishwick for his sterling efforts in the downpour, Peter's wife Mary for once again raising money with the raffle and both teams for their sporting spirit throughout a difficult night. Association President, Keith Etches finally presented the trophy to a delighted Manor Road "A" Skipper, Ian Mitchell who will be hoping to make it a double in next weeks Wallasey News Cup Final against Sacred Heart "A" at Gladstone Squirrels.

Manor Road "A" team Captain, Ian Mitchell receives the Presidents Cup from Association President Keith Etches with Chairman, Mike Costall in attendance.

Sad news from Wallasey Royal British Legion Bowling Club.
I am very sorry to have to inform members of the sad death of Phil Jones from Wallasey R.B.L. Bowling Club. Phil passed away at Clatterbridge Hospital yesterday and will be sorely missed not only by the Legion Members but the Wallasey Bowling community as a whole. Phil was a tremendous clubman who worked tirelessly for the club and he was so enthusiastic about his role as President. Our thoughts and condolences go to his family at this tragic time. Funeral arrangements will be posted as soon as I receive details.

Another Wallasey victory as Sandridge win Wirral C.G.B.A. Stott Cup
Following on from Manor Road "B" team winning the Graham White Cup a fortnight ago, another Wirral C.G.B.A. Trophy was claimed by a Wallasey side on Saturday, as Sandridge beat Pensby in an excellent Stott Cup Final on a super quick Gladstone green. With both teams off scratch, Pensby held the upper hand in the early stages of the match leading 74-73 after four blocks and indeed increasing the lead to 9 shots after the middle four had finished. Sandridge proved just too strong at the end though with 3 winners in the back four and an overall 221-215 six shot win. The main feature of this Final though was the excellent sporting spirit in which the two teams contested the match. Sandridge add the Stott Cup to the Sheppick Cup they have already won and with them leading the Wallasey C.G.B.A. 2nd Division at the moment, a brilliant treble looks on the cards for them
