Disappointing Home & away defeat by Yorkshire leaves Wallasey 3rd in table
Wallasey C.G.B.A. lost both the home and away legs in today's crucial British Parks C.G.B.A. Senior County Championship Group "A" match and consequently finish third in the group and fail to qualify for the Semi Finals in August. With only 5 home winners and 4 away winners, Wallasey could only muster 9 points in an overall 09-22 loss that saw Yorkshire deservedly top group "A" and march into the Semi Final. The home match at the New Brighton Cricket & Bowls Club (Quarry Vikings) Lower Green was a very tight affair with Wallasey just losing out by 2 points 217-219. There were fine home performances from Peter Milnes, an excellent 21-06 winner, Anthony Thompson 21-12 and a trio of 21-18 winners in Craig Saville, Dave Gilmore and Ian Sherbrooke. In the away leg at Pudsey Littlemoor, a tricky green took it's toll with 3 single figure losers for Wallasey accounting for 49 shots of an eventual 60 shot 171-231 loss. A Captains display by Frank O'Neill 21-13 came too late for Wallasey despite Neil Sherbrooke 21-15, John Lloyd 21-17 and Geoff Lynch 21-18 all bowling really well on the day to record fine wins.

Grange take Sheppick Cup after excellent Final against Poulton
After a tremendous Sheppick Cup Final last night, Grange finally overcame a spirited fight back by Poulton, to eventually win the Sheppick Cup by nine shots at New Brighton Cricket & Bowls Club (home of Quarry Vikings Bowling Club). Grange blazed an early trail of destruction with the first four all winning to set up a 36 shot lead. Steve Casey 21-17, Bill Casey 21-12, Chuck Stevens 21-11 and an eventual match winning 21-08 from Skipper, John Mcloughlin, were the four Grange winners and the spectators could be forgiven for thinking this could be another one sided Final after the Association Cup and Harold Jones Finals in the previous two weeks. Poulton however, had different ideas and the fight back started when John Nowell-Fenna 21-11, Ken Brierley 21-14 and Harry Scully 21-14 all posted fine winning cards in the middle four for Poulton. Crucially for Grange, Chris Madden came from 01-10 down to win an excellent match against June Fenna 21-18 and Grange led by 15 after 8 blocks. This Final still proved hard to predict with Poulton having another 3 winners in the back four. Alan Bennett 21-14, John Brierley 21-15 and Dave Dyer 21-19 were the Poulton heroes but John Barke's 21-12 (including one tremendous wood that somehow managed to squeeze past 3 sentries guarding the jack) proved vital to Grange and even though both teams had 6 winning cards each, 213-204 was the score at the end of a pulsating night's bowls. Congratulations to Grange and commiserations to Poulton but both teams can be proud of the way they conducted themselves on the night, with excellent sportsmanship shown by all the winners and losers alike. This was a great advertisement for the Second Division and a really enjoyable evenings bowls.

Majestic Display sees Queens Royal regain Harold Jones Cup
Lightning struck twice for Manor Road "B", in the shape of Queens Royal, last night at Magazine Bowling Club, when a whitewash of twelve winners saw Queens Royal race to a 252 -180 victory in the Harold Jones Cup Final. The last time these two sides met in a Cup Final at Magazine, the Presidents Cup Final of 2007, the heavens opened and in a complete downpour, Queens Royal had all 12 winners. Last night, mercifully, the heavens opened before the match and despite a torrential downpour, the match went ahead for the most part in dry weather. It made no difference to Queens Royal however as they once again got off to a magnificent start with 3 single figure winners in the first four to almost pull back the handicap of 48 straightaway. Les Henderson 21-08 and Eddie Dutton and Peter Milnes, both 21-09 being the early stars for Royal and with Steve Scott posting a 21-16 against a best of the day Les Jones for Manor Road "B", 40 points had been shaved off the handicap. Brian Leonard continued the carnage in the middle four with a fine 21-08 win and with Colin Saville 21-12, Geoff Lynch 21-14 and Dave Croston 21-15 adding more Royal wins, the knife was being plunged into the Manor Road "B" heart with even greater force. Frank O'Neill piled even more agony onto Manor, coming from 4-8 down to run out an impressive 21-08 winner and with a trio of 21-11 wins from Paul Saville, Craig Saville and Royal Skipper, Mike Nelson, the whitewash was completed. Once again Queens Royal proved to be too strong for Manor Road "B" on the night and deservedly regained the trophy they lost last year, after ironically losing to Manor Road "B" in an early round. Both teams deserve great credit for the sporting nature in which victory and defeat were accepted and Mike Nelson after thanking the Officials and the host club, rightly thanked his team for their performance in regaining a trophy the club is beginning to regard as their own.

Harold Jones Cup Final & Race Night
Our Annual Race Night will finally take place tonight at Manor Road Bowling Club, with the 1st race due to start at 8-30pm. We are also staging the Harold Jones Cup Final tonight at the Magazine Bowling Club starting at 6-00pm. Why not make it a double header and get down to the Magazine to see if Manor Road "B" can upset the odds and beat Queens Royal and then trot along to Manor Road to try and beat the odds offered by the "one and only" Tommy Walker, who will once again host our Race Night in his own inimitable style. Manor Road "B" have been awarded a 48 start from the handicappers and will be hoping to take revenge against Queens Royal for the whitewash inflicted upon them in the Presidents Cup Final 3 years ago.

The home match takes place at the New Brighton Cricket & Bowls Club (home of Quarry Vikings Bowling Club) Lower Green and the away match will be at Pudsey Littlemoor W.M.C. Moreton Royal British Legion "B" team win Association Cup
Moreton Royal British Legion "B" held off a tremendous fightback by the Quarry Vikings "B" back four to take the Association Cup by 22 shots last night at an extremely fast and tricky Wallasey Royal British Legion green last night. With a bonus of a 48 start from the handicappers, Moreton forged into a virtually unassailable lead with 3 winners in the first four blocks, with the Vikings front four finding the green just a little quick at the start. John Dodd with an excellent 21-06 was the best for Moreton in this section and with both Roy Whitehurst 21-17 and Ron Fletcher 21-14 posting winning cards for the Legion, Steve Winter's 21-19 did not make a serious dent in the scoreline after four blocks of 130-58 to the Legion. Rodney Watkins quickly brought the Vikings into striking distance with an assured 21-08 victory but no sooner had he come off, Reg Hudson replied for the Legion with an equally impressive 21-07 win. Iain McKillop posted a tight 21-18 card for the Vikings but once again the Legion responded with a 21-15 victory for Tom O'Hanlon. With 5 winners in the first 8 blocks, the Legion seemed home and hosed but the Vikings staged a brilliant fightback from the last 4 blocks pulling 54 shots back thanks to 3 single figure winners, Dave Rust 21-04, Phil Hale 21-09 and Eddie Rimmer 21-06. Ken Winter added a 21-11 winning card but the damage had been done early on in this Final and the Legion finally had a winning score of 228-206 to take the trophy for the first time. The Association Chairman, Mike Costall, thanked both teams for a sporting Final and also thanked the host club, Wallasey Royal British Legion, for their help in the staging of the match on an excellent if very quick green. Despite some reservations about the handicap awarded in this match from some quarters, Moreton Royal British Legion just got to grips with the surface a lot quicker than Quarry Vikings and despite only having 5 winners to the Vikings 7 winners, the Legion had done enough to deserve their victory.

The Association Cup Final takes place tomorrow night (Saturday July 3rd) at Wallasey Royal British Legion Bowling Club. The Final starts at 6-00pm and hopefully a good crowd of spectators will take advantage of the anticipated good weather and turn up to the match to see if Quarry Vikings "B" can defy the 48 shot handicap given to their opponents, Moreton Royal British Legion "B", by the Association handicappers.
