 Tom Basnett Pairs.

It was an incident packed Evening when the Final Stages of the Tom Basnett Pairs was held at Marine Park Bowling Club. With one of the qualifying pairs having to withdraw because of the non appearance of one of the players the night started off badly and things got worse when play finally got under way. After about 15 minutes and with three quarter final matches on the green, play was halted because the Marine Park pavillion had caught fire. Thick black smoke could be seen from the roof area and before long flames appeared at the back of the building. Dave Gilmore quickly called out the fire brigade and play was suspended whilst the blaze was brought under control. The cause of the fire was thought to be down to vandals setting paper alight in an area at the back of the building. After a delay of about half an hour, play resumed and John McEneany and Bob Edwards qualified to meet Matt Gilmore and Anthony Thompson in the final. During the semi finals play had been interrupted again,  this time by a couple of drunken teenage girls messing about on the green by throwing woods around and then daring the players to actually throw them off the green. Wisely nobody went near them as it was obvious that trouble was brewing if the girls had been touched. After all these events the fact that the few spectators left at the end of the night witnessed a magnificent final was a tribute to the four players taking part. Matt Gilmore and Anthony Thompson had raced into a 14-03 lead and it looked as if the final was going to be an anti climax after what had gone on before but with great fighting spirit and a good deal of fine bowling Bob Edwards and John McEneany clawed their way back into the match. Eventually finding themselves 17-20 down, Matt and Anthony were lying 3 with a wood to come but could not make the 4 and take the match and it was suddenly 20-20. John and Bob finally triumphed by running the jack through with the second last wood bowled and when their opponents final wood dropped into the dyke, the trophy was theirs. Association President Keith Etches presented the trophy to the winning pair and we could all go home after an exhausting evening.
