Wallasey start with win against Cheshire in British Parks County Championship
Wallasey defeated Cheshire 19-12 in yesterday's opening Group "C" match in the British Parks Senior County Championship with the "Home" team having 11 winners in a resounding 96 shot victory. The "Away" team got off to a disastrous start, losing the first 8 games but recovered with 3 victories in the back four to claim a vital 3 points and confirm an overall victory for the combined squad. The home leg at Quarry Vikings saw James Fitzpatrick continue his fine form, with an excellent 21-07 victory, on the green on which he claimed the New Brighton Classic earlier this month. Paul Saville and Craig Saville both recorded fine victories 21-17 and 21-15 respectively, with Paull pulling back a sizeable early deficit in his match. 4 winners in the middle four, including a best of the day 21-05 win for Geoff Lynch in an awesome display, saw Wallasey take complete control of the match with Dave Gilmore 21-10, Peter Milnes 21-10 and Barry Smith 21-14, on debut, all bowlinbg well to back up Geoff's performance. In the back four,Tommy Walker arguably produced the performance of the day, with an impessive 21-06 victory which only included 2 "fires" in the match. Tommy has been warned that his club captain expects the same in league matches in future. Ian Sherbrooke produced a clinical 21-08 victory blazing a trail up and down the centre of the green and Anthony Thompson won 21-16 in a hard fought match. The match of the day saw Rob Fitzpatrick involved in a ding dong 21-20 victory to complete an excellent display by the team.
The away team had to recover from an early battering at Great Moor Sports and Social Club to keep Wallasey in with a chance of overall victory and after losing the first 8 matches, the experience of the back four proved crucial. Brian Leonard 15-21, Ian Mitchell 16-21 and Tony Cavanagfh 17-21 all bowled well without managing to force wins but Neil Sherbrooke 21-14, John Lloyd 21-12 and "Skipper" Frank O'Neill 21-15 all bowled exceptionally well to win their respective matches, with George Stead just being pipped 19-21 after a fine display from him. This late surge from the back four was crucial to the combined team performance in forcing an overall aggregate 425-381 victory for Wallasey. Winning 19-12, Wallasey have taken an early lead at the top of the Group "C" table but as forecast earlier, this group is going to be a very close run affair at the end of the day.
My thanks to all 24 players taking part for the team and to all the supporters and scorers and measurers and committee members who turned out on a wet and miserable afternoon. It will be need a another strong team effort throughout the next two matches against North Staffordshire and Birkenhead to enable us to keep our early position in the League Table. Peter Fishwick once again did his excellent job as our home Referee in very trying conditions and was on the green throughout, despite the drenching rain at times, thanks again Peter.

Bronze Resist A Strong Royden Hall start to win the Association Cup in Style.
Bronze Bowling Club deservedly won the Association Cup last night, despite opponents Royden Hall getting off to a great start with three winners and a 19 from the first four blocks. Roy Cashen 21-12, Neil Taylor 21-15 and a Royden Hall "best of the night" 21-06 from John Leece saw Royden take a 16 shot advantage after the first four with only Frank Potter's 21-19 stopping the flow for Bronze. Leading 82-66 and cancelling out the handicap already, Royden Hall must have been confident of taking the Cup for the first time. Bronze, however, had other plans and they had 3 winners in the second four to force a 7 shot lead at 145-138. Two tremendous single figure victories for Tom Munnerley 21-08 and Bronze "Skipper", Stan Weir 21-07, combined with a ding dong 21-20 victory for Don Snelgrove gave Bronze the edge with Barry Thompson's 21-16 victory being Royden Hall's only reply. Bronze forged ahead with a further three winners in the back four to finally win the Cup by a comfortable 44 shots. Bob Evans had the best win of the evening, posting an impressive 21-05 winning card and he was well supported by Alan Gaynor's excellent 21-07 victory and Brian Bamber's 21-12 win. Royden Hall's, Gerry Jones won 21-19 to give them five winners on the night. Unfortunately for Royden Hall, four single figure losses was too much to cope with and Bronze were delighted winners with a final 227-183 scorecard and seven winners from the twelve matches. This was our first midweek Final for many years and there was a good sized crowd at the Manor Road Bowling Club to witness the Bronze success. Sadly the only thing missing from an excellent evening was the well known "Come on the Bronze" shout from the sidelines. A delighted Stan Weir received the Cup from the Association President, Keith Etches.

Association Cup Final
The Association Cup Final takes place tomorrow night, May 12th, at Manor Road Bowling Club starting at 6-30pm. Bronze take on Royden Hall and will receive a 12 shot start courtesy of the handicappers. This promises to be a very close fought match and I hope that the fact we have no scheduled league matches on the night, means we can attract a fair sized crowd to come and watch the Final. All our Cup Finals have been scheduled for Thursday nights this year in response to requests from many of our members as to the unsuitability of Saturday nights as a Finals night for various reasons. The two teams will line up as below and they are reminded that the dress code, as on page 53 of our current handbook, must be observed. Good luck to both teams.

Paul Saville becomes new "King of Wallasey" after excellent Merit Win
Paul Saville deservedly won his second Wallasey Individual Merit Title today after bowling consistently well all day to eventually defeat James Fitzpatrick 21-17 in an excellent Final. Paul last won this title an amazing 17 years ago in 1994 just 4 years after his dad, Walter, had first put the Saville name on the impressive trophy. Paul takes over as the new "King of Wallasey" from cousin Craig, who he defeated 21-20 in a top class semi final match. "Sav" started the day off with a 21-09 victory over Joyce Stead before defeating Tommy Walker 21-16 in his quarter final match. The classic victory over Craig in the semi final saw Paul through to the final against the newly crowned New Brighton Classic winner James Fitzpatrick. James had beaten Tony Cavanagh, Bill Astles, Bill Atkinson and Les Henderson on his way to the final but despite taking an early 3-1 lead in the final, James had to play second fiddle to the in form Sav, who powered into a 10-04 and then 18-07 lead and at 20-09 it seemed all over. James fought back to 17-20 before a short lead allowed Paul room to get in, which he gleefully took to record his second Wallasey Merit Title. Paul had actually donated a nice bottle of Glenfiddich to be given to the winner but a gentleman through and through, he decided that Terry Fanning from the Bronze Bowling Club should receive the bottle in appreciation of his excellent hospitality throughout the day. I would like to thank everyone who turned up today after a torrential downpour just before the start of play gave us thoughts that no one would bother to come. Everybody who came helped in some way or other, either by marking, measuring or making tea and despite the on off rain most of the morning. there was a lot of excellent bowls played on the heavy greens. My thanks also go to our Competition Secretary, Keith Etches, for his brilliant contribution as organiser of these events year in year out for Wallasey bowls.

Divisional Cup Semi Final Results
The three Divisional Cup Semi Finals took place last Tuesday and in the Association Cup, Royden Hall qualified to meet Bronze in the Final after a convincing 42 shot victory against Sacred Heart "C". Bronze had an equally convincing 38 shot win against Telegraph and it looks as though the Final this coming Thursday at Manor Road will be an exciting, closely contested affair.

The Sheppick Cup Semi Finals saw Poulton and Moreton R.B.L. "A" teams qualify for the May 19th Final after differing results in their respective matches. Poulton had a very close 7 shot victory over Sandridge and Moreton R.B.L. "A" team completed a big 47 shot win against Hoylake Central "B".

The Harold Jones Cup Semi Finals also produced two differing matches with Hoylake Central "A" team having a surprisingly easier 28 shot victory against Quarry Vikings "A" team than would have been expected. The performance of the evening though came from the Manor Road "B" team who lost by only 3 shots to the powerful West Kirby Victoria. Conceding 78 shots, West Kirby Victoria were still 40 shots adrift going into the last four but once again they came up with the goods when needed most.

Race Night raises £400 despite poor turn out.
Our Annual Race Night, held at Sacred Heart Parish Centre last Friday night proved to be a successful venture, raising £400 for the Association. I would like to thank Tommy Walker for his unstinting efforts in attracting sponsors and buyers for the horses, without which efforts we would have had a possible disaster on our hands because of the pitiful response from the majority of our Association Members on the night. As usual Tommy's wife Joan once again excelled as the chief cashier and Joe Connolly and two of the Sacred Heart Lady members did us proud with the raffle and by acting as betting tellers. It is very disappointing that, what is an excellent evening's entertainment, should be tarnished by a lack of support from our members. After all it is for the benefit of all Wallasey Association Clubs that we hold these events. Tommy's efforts as M.C. once again had us entertained and some people actually went home quite a deal better off than when they arrived, Mike Costall (again) and Andy Wainwright just to mention two. A special thanks must go to the Birch Family entourage with Ian's family providing a handsome contribution making up nearly a quarter of our profit. Thanks to Stuart and Ian and the rest of the family and it was good to see Ken at the event as well. Thanks also go to the Sacred Heart Snooker Room members who kept on popping in and out during the evening and also parting with good money in our Auction Race. I shouldn't have to name people who attended the evening but the poor turn out did give me the opportunity to cast an eye round the room with the usual suspects in attendance. Mike and Sylvia Costall, Bill and Sandra Astles, Andy Wainwright, Chris Morrison, John and Pat Crowther, Kai Gorman, Kath Davies, Alan Hughes, Danny Sweeney, John Sherlock, Paula Benson, Jan Meskell and of course our President, Keith Etches. The "King of Wallasey" one of our greatest supporters, honoured us once again with his presence and Craig deserves great credit for coming back from Bromborough Pool to help our cause. Without the core of supporters we have, willing to pay out their cash on the night, our fees would have to rise and these nights go a long way to keep bowling a reasonably cheap sport for our members. I thank all Association members and all bowlers on the Wirral who either bought horses or sponsored races, without you we could not make a profit on the evening.

Race Night Friday April 15th 2011
At Sacred Heart Parish, Centre, Moreton Cross, Moreton, First Race 8-00pm

We are holding our Annual Race night on Friday April 15th at the Sacred Heart Parish Centre, Moreton Cross, Moreton. These race nights allow us to keep our affiliation fees at the same level year after year and have helped us to raise our prize money for our Team Competitions over the last two seasons. The race nights have proved to be a very enjoyable and sometimes lucrative evening's entertainment for all who attend and hopefully this year we will once again be suitably entertained by Tommy Walker, our mercurial host for the Evening. I know that there is a full Birkenhead League programme taking place on the 15th but why not play your match and then come along to Sacred Heart with a few team mates and relax with a few drinks and a few bets. The more people we have attending on the night, the better the entertainment and of course, hopefully we can raise a few more pence towards our funds.
Sunday April 10th
Nearly There, please remember, 6-15pm Starts until May 1st
We are very near to to the season starting now and with the Divisional Cup preliminary rounds beginning on Tuesday followed by Thursday's first round of League matches, I would like to remind clubs that, as usual, matches taking place in April must start at 6-15pm. After playing in the Charity Handicap last week and knowing how quickly it went dark, I might also suggest that if possible and if both team captains agree, 5 blocks should be on the green from the start. Obviously this is difficult on smaller greens but we are starting our season a week earlier than usual this year and once the sun goes down, scheduled for 8-10pm on Tuesday, the light goes quickly.
Good luck to every team and enjoy the season.
