Wallasey Festival
Once again, the Entries for the Wallasey Festival have been very disappointing and with the closing date being today, it seems likely that for the third year in succession, the competition may have to be cancelled. Keith Etches is prepared to accept entries up until Monday but after that we will make a decision on whether or not the competition will go ahead. We have only had entries from Harrison Park, Queens Royal, Wallasey Royal British Legion and West Kirby Victoria so far.

Manor Road "C" crowned Division Three Champions
Congratulations to Manor Road "C" team, who beat closest rivals Royden Hall on Thursday night to win the Third Division Title despite Royden Hall having to still play two games this week. Royden Hall can still be caught by Quarry Vikings "B" in the race for the Runners Up spot and both sides meet in a vital match this week. After a difficult week, the Manor Road "C" team Captain, Linda Mitchell, will be delighted with her team's efforts during the season and the reward of Division Two bowls next season.
Sunday August 23rd
Manor Road "A" win Wallasey News Cup
After an excellent night's bowling at Wallasey Royal British Legion last night, Manor Road "A" emerged as deserved winners of the Wallasey News Cup with a 35 shot victory over Queens Royal "A". With 7 winners to 5 on the night, Manor Road won by more than the 24 shot handicap they were awarded by the handicappers. League form went out of the window as Manor Road coped with the tricky Legion green better than their opponents on the night. Manor Road had three outstanding winners in, Peter McGregor 21-09, Sandra Astles 21-11 and Skipper Ian Mitchell 21-07 to always maintain their lead even though Eddie Dutton 21-10 and Craig Saville 21-12 tried their best for Royal to pull back the deficit. Bill Astles 21-18 and Peter McGregor were the two Manor Road winners in the first four and despite Les Henderson 21-17 and Steve Scott replying for Queens Royal, it was 98-69 going into the middle four. Once again the middle four contained two winners for each side with Manor Road's Barry Smith 21-19 and Sandra Astles fine victory counteracted by Eddie Dutton's excellent win and Brian Leonard's 21-16, leaving the score after 8 blocks 166-141 to Manor Road. Three winners in the back four for Manor Road sealed Royal's fate with George Stead 21-18 and Ged Richardson 21-19 complementing Ian Mitchell's brilliant win. Despite Craig Saville replying for Queens Royal the final score was 241-206 and the Cup was taken the short distance back to the Manor Road Club where both sides enjoyed a "few drinks" and a fine buffet.

Wallasey News Cup Final
The Wallasey News Cup Final takes place this coming Saturday (August 22nd) at Wallasey Royal British Legion starting at 5-30 pm. Manor Road "A" take on Queens Royal "A" in what should be an entertaining Final. Manor Road receive 24 shots from Queens Royal courtesy of the handicappers and the line ups can be seen below. Spectators will be made more than welcome on the night.
Thursday August 20th
Wallasey RBL, Division Two Champions
Congratulations to Wallasey Royal British Legion who have won the Division Two Title to go along with their Runners Up performance in the Sheppick Cup. With Harrison Park only managing 9 points away at Hoylake Central "B" on Tuesday, the Legion cannot be caught at the top. We do not have the result of Tuesday's Wallasey RBL v Marine Park match in yet because of the local Post Strike in Wallasey, as well as a few other results but the promoted teams to Division One next season will be Wallasey RBL and Harrison Park. Great Meols gained sufficient points on Tuesday to avoid the drop back into Division Two and unfortunately this means Gladstone Squirrels and Magazine will be the two teams to go down. The two relegated teams from Division Two will be Bronze and Queens Royal "B" but the Division Three Title is yet to be decided between Manor Road "C" and Royden Hall. Quarry Vikings "B" still have a chance to gain promotion if Royden Hall slip up in their last 3 matches.

Wallasey v Cheshire
Both the Wallasey "Home Team" (Les Henderson) and "Away Team" (Frank O'Neill) Captains, would like me to express their thanks to their teams for all the support during yesterday's successful matches against Cheshire in the British Parks Senior County Championship. They would particularly like to thank the players not selected but who did turn up and mark cards and cheer the teams on during the Afternoon. I would personally like to thank all the supporters who made the trip to Stockport and made my job easier on the day. As I said in my match report, the future does look bright for Wallasey bowls at representative level and the support is much appreciated by all the players playing on the day.

West Kirby Victoria finally break Queens Royal Hoodoo in Cup matches.
West Kirby Victoria won the Presidents Cup Final at Manor Road on Saturday Evening and finally broke the hoodoo Queens Royal have had over them in Cup matches in recent years. With 6 winners each the match was a fine advert for Wallasey Bowls but West Kirby managed to triumph by 20 shots thanks to a strong showing in the back four. The Vics gained an early 11 shot advantage thanks to 3 winners in the 1st four with Royal's Les Henderson's 21-20 being the only reply to Robby Hall 21-15, Robby Fitzpatrick 21-18 and Mally Andrews 21-18 winning cards for the Vics. Royal completely dominated the middle four cards with Colin Saville 21-17, Eddie Dutton 21-17, Brian Leonard 21-20 and Craig Saville 21-13 all winning and giving their team a 6 shot advantage going into the back four. Mathew Gilmore however, with the performance of the night, posted a terrific 21-06 winning card to give the Vics the impetus required to go on and win the Cup. Anthony Thompson 21-16 and Jamie Fitzpatrick 21-13 won their matches with the solitary reply for Royal being Peter Milnes 21-19 victory and at the end of the night the final score was 232-212 for West Kirby Victoria. Queens Royal do have a chance to bounce back straightaway when they take on Manor Road "A" in the Wallasey News Cup Final at Wallasey Royal British Legion next Saturday night starting at 5-30pm.

Wallasey overcome Cheshire challenge to prove critics and Parks Committee wrong
Wallasey's home and away sides did the Association proud this afternoon by defeating Cheshire by 20 points to 11 to win the Division Three title in the British Parks Senior County Championship. By claiming the title, the Wallasey Association have proved all their critics from near and far, how wrong it was to place us in Division Three this term because other teams felt it their right to be placed in higher Divisions. The home side at Manor Road with 9 winners, defeated Cheshire by 11-03 whilst the away side, with 6 winners, went down only 06-08 on a strange looking upturned shoe of a green in Stockport. With the 3 extra points for the overall aggregate score Wallasey finished on 44 points to runners up Cheshire's 35 points. Les Henderson, the home team Captain, led his team in style with a tremendous 21-03 win closely followed by 21-04 and 21-05 victories for Dave Gilmore and Brian Leonard respectively. Matt Gilmore followed up his fine win in the Presidents Cup last night with another convincing display in a 21-08 victory. There were fine away victories for John Lloyd 21-06, Captain Frank O'Neill 21-14, Steve Scott 21-16, Mark Bainbridge 21-19, Colin Saville 21-20 and Karl Sherbrooke also 21-20 from 14-20 down. Special mention must go to four players this season starting with perennial reserve, Tommy Walker, who won both his matches convincingly. Three "younger" players were given their chance in the County side this year, Mark Bainbridge, Brian Leonard and Phil Vaughan and all three proved the selectors right by winning both their matches. The future of the British Parks C.G.B.A. County Championship is very unclear at the moment but the future for Wallasey C.G.B.A. continues to look bright wherever we may be playing next season.

West Kirby Victoria win First Division Title for a record 9th consecutive season.
Congratulations to West Kirby Victoria Bowling Club for their magnificent achievement in winning the Wallasey C.G.B.A. First Division Title for a record Ninth consecutive season. After their victory at Hoylake Central last Thursday, the Vics cannot now be caught by their arch rivals Queens Royal, who once again had a splendid season in finishing Runners Up.
The Division Two Title seems to be in the grasp of Wallasey Royal British Legion who need to gather 4 points at home to Marine Park next Tuesday to guarantee they cannot be caught by Harrison Park. Harrison Park themselves need to gain another 4 points at Hoylake Central "B" to confirm at least the Runners Up spot from Liscard.
The Division Three Title will be won by either Manor Road "C" or Royden Hall with Manor Road "C" leading the table at the moment by 22 points with one match to play (against Royden Hall). Royden Hall have three matches to play and can still win the title. Quarry Vikings "B" are not out of the running for 2nd place, being nine points ahead of Royden Hall but Quarry have only one match left to play.

Wallasey C.G.B.A. v Bebington & District Bowling League
Unfortunately we will not be able to fulfil the proposed three Representative matches against the Bebington League this season. I have had very little response from my letter to clubs requesting nominations for selection for the teams and with the continued bad weather severely hampering evening matches in the Bebington, Birkenhead and Wallasey Leagues, it will be virtually impossible to find suitable dates to play these fixtures this season. With the number of re-arranged matches in all three Leagues now nearing the 50 mark, the League season is going to stretch to the end of August and we then have our Five A Side competition starting. I would like to thank Mark Myles from the Bebington & District Bowling League for his hard work in trying to make these fixtures possible but hopefully we can work something out after our respective A.G.M.'s for allocating dates in next season's fixture list for the matches.

Proposals for Annual General Meeting.
As we reach the latter stages of the season, it is time for Clubs to consider what, if any proposals, they would like to bring to the Annual General Meeting in November. I have been approached with various suggestions regarding the Starrings, Handicaps, League Points Scoring System, Dress Code etc. and I must remind Clubs that it is your Association and is up to you to change things that you feel need changing. The Executive Committee only act on proposals from the Clubs that are democratically voted on at each Annual General Meeting. If you feel that rule changes need to be made, discuss them and get your Club Secretary to write to me before September 30th with any proposals you may have.
On a lighter note, as of last night, July 31st, I have not had a single application for the position of Secretary/Treasurer of the Association since I indicated that I could possibly not be standing for re-election in November. Having discussed the matter with the Executive Committee, I have therefore decided that I will once again stand for re-election in November. This does however, not stop anyone who may want to take over the position from having their name put forward and seconded at the A.G.M.

A reminder to Clubs that we are now back to 6-15pm starts in all League and Cup matches from Monday onwards.
