Queens Royal & West Kirby Victoria set to meet in Presidents Cup Final
Queens Royal and West Kirby Victoria are set to renew old rivalries when they meet in the Presidents Cup Final at Manor Road Bowling Club on Saturday August 15th. Queens Royal comfortably beat the gallant Poulton in their semi final on Tuesday but West Kirby Victoria left it until the last wood of their match against Sacred Heart to scrape through by one point. With Royal having the upper hand against the Vics in their recent Harold Jones Final victories, they will be confident of doing the same on the 15th but the Vics will have a point to prove and after their League double over Royal this season they will also feel confident of victory. It promises to be a great night and hopefully this match will attract a big crowd on the evening.

John Hignett Jnr. wins Tony Vyskocil 31 Up Trophy with top class bowls all afternoon
Gladstone's John Hignett Jnr. produced an afternoon of top class bowling at Manor Road yesterday, to win the Tony Vyskocil 31 Up Memorial Trophy in fine style. John defeated Craig Saville 31-16 in his quarter final match with some excellent bowling along the bottom edge of the green. Craig led 03-00, 07-04 and 10-09 before a brilliant break of 12 saw John take control at 21-11 and move onto his final 31-16 winning score. John produced another crucial 9 break from 08-07 down to take a vital 16-08 lead against Jamie Fitzpatrick in the semi final and he led 25-16 before a late fight back from Jamie brought the score up to 25-29 only for John to make a neat double on a round peg down the green and stride into the final with a 31-25 victory. Allan Bainbridge, meanwhile, produced his own good bowls in a determined defence of his title with a fine 31-18 win against club mate, Ian Mitchell in the quarter final, with Ian finding the green a yard or two slower than in the previous day's John Lees competition due to the heavy rain overnight and during the afternoon. Allan really came into his own in the semi final against Ian Hazlehurst ( who had just beaten the 2007 winner Rob Hall 31-27 in his quarter final match) with an outstanding start. Allan went into an 08-00 and 16-01 lead which he increased to 22-04, leaving Ian too far behind and despite some good ends from Ian, Allan eventually cruised into the final with a 31-13 winning card. John got off to an early 07-00 lead in the Final with some good corner bowls before Allan drew level at 07 across. 12 out of the next 15 points went to John to enable him to have a comfortable 19-10 lead before a come back by Allan saw the score reduced to 18-21. John however showed his class with a decisive run of 7 on the trot and eventually through to a winning 31-24 score line. John Hignett Jnr. fully deserved his win in the end and was a delighted 3rd winner of the unique trophy kindly donated and presented to John by Mrs. Vyskocil, Tony's Mum after the match.

Wallasey's British Parks County Championship season finally gets under way
The Association's, British Parks Senior County Championship season finally started today with a resounding 24-07 victory over a much improved Warwickshire outfit from previous seasons. The "home team" under new Skipper Les Henderson, at Quarry Vikings, had 11 winners out of 12 to post a winning 240-157 scoreline and a 13-01 points score in our favour. Mathew Gilmore 21-05, Chris Barton 21-08, Tommy Walker 21-08, Brian Leonard 21-09 and Mark Bainbridge 21-10 were excellent contributors to Wallasey's victory with both Brian Leonard and Mark Bainbridge doing themselves no harm in tremendous debut displays. The "away team" Captained by the jovial "Frank O'Neill" (apologies to Frank for me having Neil Sherbrooke as Captain on the programme), had to share 6 winners each with their Warwickshire counterparts. Colin Saville 21-05, Karl Sherbrooke 21-07 and John Lloyd 21-10 posted excellent winning cards and they were ably backed up by Craig Saville's 21-16 and Neil Sherbrooke's 21-19 wins. Special mention however must go to Phil Vaughan, another young player making his debut for the County side today, for coming through a difficult encounter with a hard earned and well deserved 21-19 victory. Wallasey won this game 221-202 bto gain an 8 points to 6 victory and with an extra 3 points available for the overall aggregate of the two matches, a final 24 points to 07 winning margin sets us up nicely for the "title" decider against Cheshire next month. Thank you to all the supporters who turned up at both matches especially the Gladstone Squirrels and Quarry Vikings contingents who travelled all the way to Sutton Coldfield.

Sacred Heart "B" take Sheppick Cup with tremendous back four display
Sacred Heart "B" captured the Sheppick Cup last night with an astonishing back four display to upset current Division Two Leaders, Wallasey R.B.L. by an amazing 45 shot margin. The match, played in cool conditions at Quarry Vikings Bowling Club, was a closely contested sporting encounter with the tie in the balance until games 9-11 came onto the green. Sacred Heart "B", with a 12 shot advantage courtesy of the handicappers, started off in fine form with 3 winners in the first four to forge an early 21 shot advantage. Joe Connolly 21-19, Ian Craven 21-13 and John Hollywood 21-19 were the early Heart winners with only Alf Edwards's 21-17 victory replying for the Legion. The match changed in the middle four however, with the Legion claiming all four blocks to reduce the deficit to just 2 shots going into the final four. John Burke 21-11, Chad Mitchell 21-19, Derek MacDonald 21-15 and Cliff Niccolls 21-20 were the Legion heroes to set up what was expected to be a tense finale to a great match. Peter Lacey 21-11, Albert Ford 21-10, Bob Hodgson 21-13 and a best of the night 21-07 from Heart's "Jack in the box" Barry Smith, proved us all wrong to blast away the Legion hopes and take an incredible 43 shots from their opponents to cement an overall 241-196 victory. A minutes silence was observed for the late Danny McGreal, one of Sacred Heart's gentlemen of the game who sadly passed away last week, before a delighted Steve Hollywood received the Cup from Association President, Keith Etches.

Hoylake Central win Harold Jones Cup in Friendly Final
Tonight's Harold Jones Cup Final, at the immaculate Manor Road green, was played in an excellent sporting manner between the two surprise, but deserved finalists, Hoylake Central and Sandridge. Hoylake Central finally overcame a gallant Sandridge team with 8 winners to 4, to secure a fine 29 shot victory. Having to give away 12 shots, courtesy of the handicappers, Central quickly made inroads with 3 winners in the first 4 blocks to secure an 11 shot advantage at that stage. Margaret Browning led the way with an excellent display in winning 21-11 followed by two fine 21-13 winning cards for Curtis Tornerup and Peter Dodd. Ian Cook came through a tough encounter to post Sandridge's first win with a 21-18 victory. The middle four saw the 2 teams have 2 winners each and Sandridge reduce the deficit to just 5 going into the back four. Maureen Saville provided the best card of the night for Sandridge with an excellent 21-13 win and Steve Mealor fought hard to pull off a 21-19 victory. Hoylake's 2 winners were both involved in tight matches with Richie Davies 21-18 and Ron Openshaw 21-20 keeping Central just ahead. Hoylake Central piled on the pressure in the back four, with two great 21-10 winning performances from Steve Wharton Jnr and Jane Jones backed up by Nicky Jone's 21-17 victory. Unfortunately for Sandridge, Skipper Rick Keeley's 21-19 win was not enough to prevent Hoylake Central winning this "friendly final" 237-208. Association Chairman, Mike Costall presented the cup to a highly delighted Central Captain, Ian Hamilton. Thank you to all the spectators who turned up tonight and stayed right through to the end despite the constant rain from about 7o-clock onwards.

Wallasey R.B.L. "B" surprise Manor Road "C" to win Association Cup Final
Wallasey Royal British Legion "B" surprised current Division Three Leaders, Manor Road "C", with a fine team performance to win the Association Cup Final by 14 shots at Magazine Bowling Club's excellent green. The Legion received 30 shots from the handicappers for last night's Final and after the first four blocks were shared with 2 winners each, the lead had stretched to 33 shots. Manor Road staged a comeback in the middle four with 3 winners, including a fine 21-10 from Peter Bradford but an even better 21-09 from Chad Mitchell saw the Legion resist the charge and keep a lead of 22 shots going into the back four. When Len Wootten came off with a quick fire 21-10 win, Manor Road were only eleven shots down and threatening to win the trophy. As it happened two fine performances from Wallasey stalwarts, Brian Hepworth (21-16) and Derek McDonald (21-11) saw the Legion garner enough points to resist a late Manor Road best of the day 21-09 victory for Jim Hulican and finally win an excellent match 224-210. Legion Skipper, Chad Mitchell, delightedly received the Cup from Association President, Keith Etches and praised his team for turning around a run of 5 previous defeats to their opponents.

Association Cup Final at Magazine Bowling Club this coming Saturday
The Association Cup Final takes place this coming Saturday, July 4th, at Magazine Bowling Club starting at 5-30pm. Current Division Three League leaders Manor Road "C" take on near neighbours, Wallasey R.B.L. "B" and hopefully a good crowd will turn out to support the teams on the night. Wallasey R.B.L. "B" will be receiving 30 shots from the Handicappers and I wish both clubs luck on the night in what should be a good final. The two line ups can be seen below.
