Charity Day success for Wirral Autistic Society
Wallasey bowlers did themselves proud once again this afternoon when the Annual Charity match between West Kirby Victoria and a Wallasey C.G.B.A. select side raised a magnificent £516 for the Wirral Autistic Society. With the pre match weather once again not in our favour, pouring rain again, the match was in danger of not taking place at all but with the afternoon sun arriving just in time the 30 bowlers taking part and all the spectators and members of the Manor Road Club did brilliantly in paying out for numerous raffle tickets. I would obviously like to thank everyone who helped out this afternoon, with a special mention to Doreen Hitchmough, who once again did brilliantly selling our raffle tickets. The players taking part all contributed to an excellent afternoon for the Wirral Autistic Society and even though the result on the green was really immaterial, there were some really good games with West Kirby Victoria retaining the George Gilmore Memorial Trophy yet again, this time by an 18 shot margin. Association Chairman, Mike Costall, after thanking all our sponsors and the players and the Manor Road Club asked Mrs. Ethel Gilmore to present the trophy to the acting West Kirby Captain, Nicky Gilmore.

Divisional Cup Semi Final and Wallasey News Cup Preliminary Round Results Updated
The results from Tuesday's Association, Harold Jones and Sheppick Cup semi finals have now been updated. The Wallasey News Cup preliminary round results and the draw for the first round have also now been updated. They can be seen via their respective pages accessed via the Team Competitions page. The outstanding Presidents Cup handicap for the Second Round sees Queens 27 receive 78 from Manor Road "A".
Tuesday 24th June
Halfway stage of League Season
Last Thursday saw the League season reach the halfway stage with West Kirby Victoria once again striding clear at the top of Division One. They hold a 33 point lead over 2nd placed Queens Royal "A" with Harrison Park a further 2 points adrift. West Kirby Victoria look to be on course to set a Wallasey C.G.B.A. Division One record of 8 consecutive Title wins which would be an excellent achievement considering that Quarry were the 1st Winners way back in 1912. The two promoted teams from Division Two last season, Hoylake Central and Magazine are performing better than is normal for the teams coming up, with Hoylake Central lying in 7th position and Magazine in 9th.
In Division Two, Sandridge, who just missed out in a play off for a Division One place last year, look set to come up as Division Two winners if they keep up the same type of form as in the first half of the season. They currently top the table with a 25½ point lead over Harrison Park "B" in second place. The two relegated sides from Division One last year, Liscard and Burton's lie in 3rd and 4th places respectively. Manor Road "C" and Royden Hall, the promoted clubs from Division 3 last year are not finding it as easy in Division Two, with Manor Road "C" in 10th position and Royden Hall in 12th, in fact the bottom 3 teams are only separated by 1 point.
Division Three sees last years two teams relegated from Division Two, Bronze and Hoylake Central "B" proving too strong for the rest with Bronze in 1st place, 4½ points ahead of Hoylake Central "B". The nearest team to these two being Quarry Vikings "B" who are 17 points adrift of a promotion spot just now. The bottom two teams in this Division, Sacred Heart "C" and Burton's "B" have games in hand on all the teams above them. This Division has had more games called off because of the weather than either of the other two Divisions and with there unfortunately being only nine teams in the Division this year, some teams are going possibly two weeks without a game. This is not an ideal situation and hopefully next season we can resolve the issue even if we have to look at the possibility of just 2 divisions.

Tommy Bentley wins a top class final to round off an excellent Veterans Merit Competition
Tommy Bentley (Great Meols) defeated Ian Mitchell (Manor Road) 21-20 in a top class Veterans Merit Final at Wallasey Royal British Legion tonight. The Final brought to an end an excellent nights bowling by all the finalists and Tommy had to come from 4 -11 down to win. Ian Mitchell had taken an early control of the match to forge 11-04 and 13-08 leads before Tommy's fight back saw him leading at 16-13. Ian then had a fine run to stand all but at 20-16 until Tommy's renowned fighting qualities saw him wrestle the jack back and eventually take five shots in a row to post a 21-20 winning scorecard. Earlier in the evening two outstanding quarter finals saw Ian Mitchell defeat John McEneany 21-18 and Andy Wainwright beat Brian Hepworth 21-19. Tommy Bentley had a 21-16 win against Derek McDonald with Mally Johnson's 21-07 win against Bernie Roberts being by far the most comfortable of the quarter final matches. The semi finals saw Ian Mitchell take a decisive early lead that Mally Johnson could not quite peg back, with Tommy winning 21-13. The second semi final produced another excellent match with Tommy Bentley's corner to corner play proving decisive in a 21-18 victory over Andy Wainwright. Association Chairman Mike Costall invited Les Henderson, the generous donator of the magnificent trophy, to present the prizes and trophy to the semi finalists and Winner and Runner Up. Thanks were given to our now resident Referee, Peter Fishwick, for his sterling efforts in some wet conditions at times, indeed Peter refused payment for his efforts which were much appreciated by all. Unfortunately only a small number of spectators made the effort to turn out tonight and I thank them all for doing so but unless there is more enthusiasm from local bowlers for these Individual events in terms of entries we might lose them altogether.

Disappointing display by Wallasey in 19 points loss to East Midlands
The Wallasey C.G.B.A. British Parks Senior County Championship match against East Midlands today turned out to be a disappointing day at the office, with both home and away sides suffering heavy defeats. In the home leg at Manor Road Wallasey suffered a 57 shot and 03 -11 points defeat, whilst the away team also suffered a 03-11 points defeat but only a 49 shot loss. With hopes high after the heroics in the first round of matches against North Staffordshire, Wallasey's day was to turn disastrously from the off in both matches, Chris Barton was the only home winner in the first 4 with a 21-18 win whilst Karl Sherbrooke was the only away winner, forging an early 17-05 lead before being pegged back by a strong reply from his opponent, before Karl regained the advantage to run out a deserved 21-17 winner. Steve Nugent was involved in a fine match before just being pipped 19-21 at the end.nThe home team could not cope with the power display from the East Midlands squad with all 4 middle blocks losing out, Geoff Lynch doing best with a 17-21 card. John Devlin and George Stead gave the away side some hope of a recovery, with John producing a brilliant 21-08 winning card by playing some excellent ends on the tricky, bumpy green, George revelled in the highly charged atmosphere produced by the vocal home supporters and silenced them with a battling 21-20 win in a fine match that changed hands several times before George produced the crowd quietening winning wood. Billy Atkinson had built up a useful 16-08 lead before his opponent took control of the jack across the centre of the green to run out a 21-16 winner. Back at Manor Road, Wallasey shared the last 4 blocks with Jamie Fitzpatrick, at one time 14-02 up, eventually winning 21-18 and Alan Bainbridge, also well up at one stage, managing a fine 21-17 victory. Late stand in Tommy Walker produced a battling display, before losing out 17-21 at the end. Unfortunately at Stretton the away side suffered 4 defeats in the back four but Frank O'Neill produced a fine performance, just losing out 18-21 after at one stage leading 15-10. All in all, only three winners at each venue was a rude awakening for Wallasey and the disappointing 06-25 points loss has left a lot to be done against Group Favourites, Greater Manchester in the next match on July 20th. I would like to thank all the spectators that turned up at both venues, especially those that travelled to Burton on Trent.

Congratulations to Bronze Bowling Club and Junior Bowlers
The Bronze Bowling Club and "Your Wirral" are to be congratulated on running training sessions for Junior bowlers at Central Park over the last two months culminating in a visit by the Wirral Mayor, Adrian Jones, to a finals session for the Junior Bowlers held at Central Park recently. After an excellent competition between the Juniors, Ryan Barker emerged a 21-16 winner against Elizabeth Hackett in the Final. It is encouraging to see so many Juniors taking an interest in the sport and the Bronze Bowling Club Secretary, Don Cook and the "Live Wirral" Warden Joe Lee have to be commended for their efforts on behalf of the Junior Bowlers.

Mathew Gilmore claims his 4th Wallasey Parks Merit Title
A tremendous night's bowling at Royden Hall last night saw Mathew Gilmore claim his 4th Wallasey Parks Merit Title with a fine 21-12 win over the 2005 Champion, Billy Atkinson. Twenty One of the Twenty Two entrants for this competition turned up at an excellent Royden Hall green at 6-00pm for the start of a competition that didn't finish until 10-35pm under the floodlights. In the Preliminary Round, two fine matches saw Tommy Walker defeat Paul Saville 21-16 and Frank O'Neill beat Mike Nelson also 21-16. Matty Gilmore beat Phil Vaughan 21-05 at this stage to qualify for a match against Frank O'Neill in the First Round. Matty built up a commanding 18-11 lead only to see brilliant comeback by Frank mean he stood at 18-19 down, Matty however took advantage of an indifferent lead from Frank to eventually run out a 21-19 winner. Chris Barton was also involved in a thrilling 21-19 win over Colin Saville in this round with Billy Atkinson opening his account with a 21-16 victory against Anthony Thompson, after at one time leading 14-02. The quarter finals were somewhat one sided apart from Craig Saville's nip and tuck 21-19 win against Jamie Fitzpatrick. Robby Fitzpatrick, after earlier 21-01 and 21-03 wins had another single figure win, this time 21-05. Mathew Gilmore beat Chris Barton 21-07 and Billy Atkinson also won 21-07 against Dave Gilmore. The two semi final matches were both excellent affairs with Matty beating Robby Fitzpatrick in a real high class encounter, 21-17. The amazing Billy Atkinson, belying his age, built up an early 13-05 lead against Craig Saville only to see Craig fight back to 17-18 before Billy eventually came out on top 21-19. With darkness approaching the lights were turned on for the final and fine bowling from Billy and Matty saw a close contest stand at 12-11 to Billy before Matty took the jack and bowl up and down the centre of the green and run out a deserved 21-12 winner. Our thanks go to Eddie Eaton and the Royden Hall Bowling Club for allowing us to use their excellent facilities and to all the entrants in the competition, especially the three from Wallasey Royal British Legion. It is good to see players from outside the First Division enter these competitions. Both Mathew Gilmore and Bill Atkinson will now represent the Wallasey C.G.B.A. in the British Parks National Finals in Central Lancashire on August 10th. The full results can be seen via the British Parks Merit page which can be accessed via the Individual Competitions page.

Executive Committee disappointed with Entries for Veterans Individual Merit
The Wallasey C.G.B.A. Executive Committee are very disappointed with the lack of entries for the Veterans Individual Merit Competition this season. With the closing date being yesterday, Competition Secretary, Keith Etches has so far received only 26 entries for this free to enter competition. On Monday 23rd June Wallasey are sending 36 Veteran Bowlers to Stockport to play in the British Parks Veterans Knockout Competition and there have been enquiries from a few clubs to start a Wallasey Veterans League (now a non starter as explained below) yet only 26 players from over 700 registered bowlers over 60 years of age have bothered to enter the Veterans Merit this year. I can understand, in some way, the lack of entries for competitions that include arguably the best younger bowlers registered with the Wallasey Association, but cannot understand the apathy from the Veterans towards this, their own competition.
Sunday 8th June
Proposed Wallasey Veterans League is a Non Starter
The talked about future Wallasey Veterans League has now, regrettably become a non starter after the lack of interest from clubs. With most of the Bebington Evening League and the Birkenhead Evening League teams scheduled to play at least 26 League matches as well as cup ties next season, it seems a lot of clubs will be hard pressed to raise teams for an extra Afternoon League

The Executive Committee have decided to postpone this years Junior Merit, due to be played on June 16th, until the School Summer Holidays to allow more Juniors to enter.
