Wednesday 29th April
British Parks Merit Competition
As a result of St.Helens pulling out of the British Parks Senior County Championship, the Executive Committee have decided to use the date for our scheduled match against St.Helens (Sunday May 17th) to run our British Parks Merit Competition. This was due to be played on Monday June 8th but it seems sensible to utilise the date of the cancelled County match, when all our County players were already available to play. The Parks Merit will now be staged at Quarry Vikings Bowling Club on Sunday May 17th starting at 1-00pm. The Winner of this event plus the Runner Up and the Two Semi Finalists will all represent Wallasey in the National Finals of the British Parks Senior Individual Merit at Burton On Trent on Sunday August 13th. The Winner of that event will gain entry into the Champion of Champions event at the Waterloo in September. Another bonus for the Winner of our Parks Merit Competition is entry into a special competition to be held at the Waterloo later in the season as part of the ongoing campaign to keep the Waterloo running as a viable venue for top class bowls events in the future. Entry forms for the Parks Merit will be with your Club Secretary by Friday of this week. This competition is open to all Wallasey Registered Bowlers not just to bowlers who are fortunate to represent us at Parks level.

Weekly Draw
The numbers drawn in the Weekly Draw today were 1,7,9,11,12,20. The Jackpot of £120 was not won and will be £140 from 19 numbers next Sunday. Association Chairman Mike Costall sold the £30 consolation prize ticket drawn to a Manor Road bowler.
Friday 24th April
Weekly Draw
The first Weekly Draw of the season will take place this coming Sunday lunch time at Manor Road. Thanks to all our members who have bought tickets and I have taken on board the fact that a few clubs have not had the opportunity to buy tickets over the last few seasons because of the sad losses of 2 of our most valued members, Denis Bulman and Eric Gage. I will make sure that our Chairman and draw organiser, Mike Costall, tries to remedy this situation as quickly as possible.

Harold Jones Cup holders, Queens Royal, suffer shock defeat in Preliminary Round
Manor Road "B" knocked out Cup holders Queens Royal in the preliminary round of the Harold Jones Cup last night, to cause one of the biggest shocks for quite some time in the Wallasey Association. Les Jones, Harold Openshaw and Alf Pennington proved that age had not diminished their skills, with excellent victories in a final winning score of 233-225 to Manor Road "B". Other preliminary round matches last night saw Manor Road "A" defeat Gladstone Squirrels and Hoylake Central beat Magazine.

Billy Atkinson wins Mayors Charity Handicap Final
Saturday night saw the final stages of the Wirral and District CGBA Mayor's Handicap Tournament played on the excellent Pensby Bowling Club green. West Kirby Victoria's Bill Atkinson put his run of second place finishes behind him and he clinched victory with a win over Kings 2000 Mark Myles in the final. Atkinson beat last year's winner, Alan Popham, in his first round match. At Pensby he had to overcome strong opposition in the shape of two Gladstone players, Darren Hankin and Craig Saville to reach the final. Meanwhile Myles had proved too strong for Bebington Park's Eric Bell and he then had a very good win against three times winner, Gladstone's Nick Burridge.
The final was an excellent game but Atkinson held on to win 21-16.
Results: Quarter finals: N. Burridge 21, G. Riley 06; M Myles 21, E. Bell 16; C. Saville 21, I. Hazlehurst 16; W. Atkinson 21, D. Hankin 15.
Semi finals: Myles 21, Burridge 14; Atkinson 21, Saville 10.
Final: Atkinson 21, Myles 16
Saturday 18th April
British Parks Senior County Championship
Once again the Senior County Championship has been thrown into disarray, this time because of the ridiculously late withdrawal of St.Helens from the British Parks set up. As St.Helens were in our Division this year, we are now only in a group of Three Teams and will not play our 1st match until July 19th against Cheshire. I am looking to hold a meeting between the Officers of our Association and our County Selectors and some of our Senior County players in the next fortnight to discuss the overall Parks situation regarding Wallasey but can confirm that we have increased our Entries into this year's British Parks Senior Individual Merit competition from 2 to 4 and we will be looking to maybe hold our Qualifying Competition on the scheduled day for the now non existent St.Helens match (Sunday May 17th), instead of Monday June 8th. This will mean that the Semi Finalists and Finalists from our Qualifying event will go forward to the National Final at Stretton Bowling Club, Burton On Trent on Sunday August 9th. The winner of that event does of course qualify for B.C.G.B.A. Champion of Champions event at the Waterloo.
Thursday 16th April
Heavy rain fails to dampen the spirit of an excellent match.
The first Challenge match between the Wallasey C.G.B.A. and the Wirral Ladies C.B.A. produced an exciting and entertaining match that was played throughout with tremendous sporting spirit between the 2 sides in an evening of high class bowling, despite the rain which steadily became heavier as the night went on. The match was so close, that both teams had 6 winning cards each but Wallasey, with 3 winning cards in the back 4, just edged a victory which had looked improbable for most of the evening, by 1 shot in a 214-213 winning score line. Wirral Ladies had got off to such a flying start with 4 winners out of the first 5 blocks that a shock defeat looked on the cards for Wallasey. 2 winning cards in the middle 4 and, vitally, 3 winners at 10, 11 and 12 saw Wallasey finally take the spoils by 1 shot. Ladies of the match for Wirral, were Mandy Excell and Elaine Milligan, who despite losing out 18-21 to Les Henderson and Colin Saville, bowled exceptionally well in a quality match full of excellent bowls by both pairs. Men of the match for Wallasey were Mike Nelson and Anthony Thompson who produced a much needed and timely victory by 21-10 over Nicky Jones and Debby Spark. Linda Jones and Joan Dewhurst 21-06, Margaret Gard and Barbara McBurney 21-14, Nicky Cooper and Jean Clark 21-18 and Carole Dunne and Margaret Vickers 21-18 were the early winners for Wirral Ladies, setting them on their way to what looked like a possible victory and when Pat Crowther and Kath Davies 21-16 and Lynsey Gorman and Jan Meskell 21-16, also posted winning cards, the writing looked on the wall for Wallasey. Brian Leonard and George Stead 21-18 and an excellent 21-12 from Bill Atkinson and Karl Sherbrooke, did however give Wallasey hope of an unlikely victory and this was seized with relish by John Devlin and John Lloyd 21-14, the aforementioned 21-10 from Mike Nelson and Anthony Thompson and then finally a crucial 21-15 win for Frank O'Neill and Matt Gilmore.

West Kirby Victoria retain the Merseyside County Club Championship
West
Kirby Victoria, reigning Wallasey Association 1st Division Champions, retained
the Merseyside County Crown Green Bowling Association Championship Cup this
afternoon at an excellent Liverpool Cricket Club green.
In the semi-finals they beat a strong Brooke
Hotel side 154-113, claiming six of the eight winning
jacks. Billy Atkinson 21-06 and Ian Sherbrooke 21-08 were the best winners for
the Vics.
In the final they beat BRNESC 161-115 having seven
winning jacks with Karl Sherbrooke winning 21-07 and Brian Leonard 21-08. This
was an excellent all round display by the Vics and they were well deserved
winners on the day. BRNESC had earlier beaten
Walton Park 143-135 with the winning jacks shared in
their semi final match.
West Kirby Victoria now go forward to the BCGBA Club
Championship at the Severnside complex in Shrewsbury on Sunday 26th April where
they play the holders Tonge (Manchester).
