Sunday February 27th

Wallasey C.G.B.A. v Wirral Ladies

Due to the Cammell Lairds ladies team being involved in the British Crown Green Team Championship on Sunday April 10th and the anticipated large amount of supporters making a weekend attending that event, our annual fixture against the Wirral Ladies County team will now take place on Wednesday May 25th (6-15pm start) instead of the original date of Friday April 8th.

Sunday February 27th

Changes to League Set Up for 2012

After the late withdrawal of Sacred Heart "B" from our Association, we are now down to 30 teams and if we do not attract any more teams for the 2012 season, the Executive Committee have decided that rather than having an imbalanced League set up for the 2012 season, we will have Three Divisions of 10 teams instead. This does mean changes in promotion and relegation rules for the coming 2011 season. TWO teams will still be relegated from Divisions One and Two but only ONE team will be promoted from Divisions Two and Three. Prize money will still stay at the same level as 2010 with the Champions of Divisions One, Two and Three receiving £100 each and the Runners Up in all three divisions receiving £75 each. Should we lose any more teams from the Association before the start of the 2012 season plans will be made for the running of a Two Division set up. There have already been suggestions put to the Executive Committee for other possible League scenarios for the 2012 season and if any members wish to add any further ideas they should do so via their Club Secretary in time for our A.G.M. in November. As it stands however our current decision of Three Divisions of 10 teams is what we are planning for.

Sunday February 27th

Withdrawal of Sacred Heart "B" Team

The Executive Committee discussed, at great length, the withdrawal of the Sacred Heart "B" team from the Association for the 2011 season. After discussions with the Sacred Heart Secretary, Barry Smith and after scrutiny of their registered list of players for 2011, it was decided to accept Sacred Heart's withdrawal of their "B" team rather than their "C" team from the Association. Assurances were obtained from Sacred Heart as to the make up of the "C" team squad and the Executive Committee accepted that the "C" team would not be significantly strengthened by the possible introduction of any former "B" team players. The 2011 season will therefore go ahead as planned with the Second Division being reduced to 10 teams. With the late withdrawal of the Sacred Heart "B" team, it does mean that the League Fixtures already issued could not be altered. Any team due to play Sacred Heart "B" will now unfortunately have a blank fixture date instead. The Executive Committee can only apologize for the inconvenience this may cause but the situation was totally beyond our control.

Sunday February 27th

Starred Player List

The Starred Player lists for 2011 have been added to the table above. The Starred Players have been approved by the Executive Committee but are still open to change if any player listed does not fulfil the obligation of playing in any of the first five league matches for their club.

Tuesday February 8th

Two more changes to provisional League Fixtures

There are a further two changes to the provisional fixtures lists sent to clubs earlier this year. Both fixtures are Division Three matches and the details are;

Moreton R.B.L. "B" v Queens, originally due to be played on Wednesday April 27th, will now be played on Tuesday May 24th.

Royden Hall v Queens, originally due to be played on Thursday July 14th, will now be played on Tuesday June 14th.

The Division Three League fixtures in the table above have now been altered accordingly.

Sunday February 6th

Sacred Heart withdraw "B" team from Association.

Further to yesterday's posting regarding the withdrawal of the Sacred Heart "B" team, I must inform our members that following enquiries from other clubs about whether or not we are correct in allowing the withdrawal of a "B" team rather than a "C" team, the whole situation will be discussed at our next Executive Committee meeting on Wednesday, February 23rd. If we decide to completely review our schedule, we will do so but it will mean that a new structure and new Cup draws will need to be made and obviously any such actions would be too late for the handbook. Fairness to all our clubs, including Sacred Heart, is our main objective and I ask all members to respect any decisions made at our Executive Committee meeting. I would however like to remind our members of the following rule taken from our Constitution and Laws.

Team Competition Rules

LEAGUE

1     Matches to be played home and away. The fixtures as arranged to be strictly adhered to. The leagues shall consist of three divisions except where the number on teams falls below 30; in such cases the Executive Committee has the power to restructure the leagues to one or two divisions. The top two in division two and three to be promoted and the two teams gaining the least points in division one and two shall be liable for relegation.

Saturday February 5th

Sacred Heart withdraw "B" team from Association.

Unfortunately, due to a lack of players, Sacred Heart Bowling Club, have decided to withdraw their "B" team from the Association and at this late stage of the year, it means that our Division Two will now consist of 10 teams instead of 11. Sacred Heart's withdrawal has come too late for us to consider a Two Division League set up for the coming 2011 season and with all our League Fixtures and Cup draws having already been made and the calendar of Individual and Team Competitions already laid out, it means that our Division Two fixtures will be badly hit. Any side due to play Sacred Heart "B" team will now obviously have a blank week. I can only apologise to all our teams in Division Two but unfortunately because of the late withdrawal of the team, it is too late to call an E.G.M. to discuss all the ramifications of going to a Two  Division League system. Such a system would mean each club having to play 28 League matches plus with 5 Cup Competitions as well as all our Individual Competitions, It could possibly mean up to 37 fixtures for a successful club in League and Cup. Obviously the 2012 season will need to be revamped if we do not attract any more teams or indeed if we were to lose any more teams but the 2011 season will go ahead as planned. I would like to point out to all our member clubs that the deadline day for resignation from the Association is January 14th of each year and failing to resign by this date leaves a club liable to all fees due for the ensuing season. Whilst having every sympathy with the Sacred Heart situation, I would like to emphasise that we are here to help clubs with any problems they may have with regards to playing numbers, as we have done quite a few times in recent seasons but unless we are contacted by the club themselves we are powerless to offer help.

Friday January 28th

Two Changes to Calendar of Events

There have been two changes made to our 2011 Calendar of Events. On Friday April 8th, the annual pairs match for "The Colin Jones Challenge Cup" between the Wallasey C.G.B.A. and Wirral Ladies teams will take place and our Charity Day has been altered from Sunday June 5th to Sunday June 12th. The Tom Bassnett Pairs One Day competition will be re-arranged at our next Executive Committee meeting on February 23rd. The Charity Day has been changed to avoid a clash with a Wirral Ladies County match on June 5th.

Monday January 24th

Division One Fixture Changes

There have been some changes to the previously published Division One Fixture list because of 1 fixture clash with the Bebington League and also the 4 fixtures scheduled in Isle of Man week, that clubs have requested be changed, as in accordance with the Notice of Motion passed at our Annual General Meeting.

Division One to be played on Tuesday May 24th:

Harrison Park v Hoylake Central (clash with Bebington League Fixture on 2nd June)

Queens Royal v Quarry Vikings (original date Tuesday 21st June, Isle of Man week)

Division One to be played on Tuesday 14th June (all 3 fixtures below were scheduled for Thursday 23rd June, Isle of Man week)

Manor Road "B" v West Kirby Kirby Victoria

Queens Royal v Great Meols

Gladstone v Quarry Vikings

All the fixtures have now been altered on the Division One fixture list accessed via the table above.

Chad Mitchell

I am sorry to have to report the sad loss of Chad Mitchell, who passed away suddenly at home last Thursday, January 13th. Chad, well known to all Wallasey bowlers, was a member of the Wallasey Royal British Legion Bowling Club and our condolences and sympathies go to all his family at friends. Chad's funeral will take place at Landican on Tuesday February 1st at 10-30am. All mourners will be made welcome at the Wallasey Royal British Legion Club, Withens Lane, Wallasey after the funeral service. Chad was one of the unique characters in Wallasey bowls and will be sorely missed by friend and foe alike.

Happy New Year to all our Members

I would like to wish all our members a Happy New Year and hope everyone has a prosperous and successful one. Unfortunately I have been laid low with pleurisy since the first week in December and all the registration forms etc. you normally would have received by now, have only just been posted today. Obviously I am late with my work at this moment but I have compiled a provisional Calendar of Events for 2011, which will go before our Executive Committee at our meeting later this month to be ratified. I have also compiled the provisional League Fixtures for 2011, once again these will hopefully be ratified at our meeting. I would urge all clubs to check the Calendar of Events and the League Fixtures via the relevant links in the above table and if you find any glaring mistakes, please do not hesitate to contact me. Hopefully, I will be well enough for us to hold our Executive Committee meeting on Wednesday 19th January and up for discussion, amongst other things, will be the situation regarding the Third Division, which unfortunately for 2011 will only consist of 9 teams. We did not have a mandate to alter our promotion and relegation system in place for 2011 and therefore two clubs were relegated from Division Two and two were promoted from Division Three as normal. With the demise of the Sandridge "B" and Wallasey RBL "C" teams, this of course leaves us with an imbalance of teams in our Divisions for 2011. If we do not attract any more teams for the 2012 season, it is very probable that we will only be promoting One team from Division Three at the end of season 2011 therefore giving us a First Division of 11 teams and Divisions Two and Three consisting of 10 teams each.

Sunday December 19th

Happy Christmas to all our members

2010 Second and Third Division Winners

The presentation of the Divisional Trophies took place at Wednesday's Annual General Meeting.

Association Chairman, Mike Costall, presents Gladstone Captain, Noel Boyd, with the Division Two Trophy at the Annual General Meeting

Association Chairman, Mike Costall presents Quarry Vikings "B" Captain, Brenda Boulton, with the Division Three Trophy at the Annual General Meeting

Association Secretary, Peter Dodd, who is also the West Kirby Victoria Secretary, refused to be photographed receiving the Division One Trophy as he actually plays for Hoylake Central. Unfortunately with the Vics Captain, Malcolm Johnson, away in Thailand his deputy, Vics Chairman Brian Buck, was too ill to attend the meeting. Hopefully Brian will make a speedy recovery and be back amongst us soon.

Saturday November 27th

Full turn out at A.G.M.   Colin Jones elected as Life Member

There was a full turn out at our A.G.M. on Wednesday night and our Vice Chairman, Colin Jones, was deservedly elected as a Life Member of the Association in recognition of his work for the Association firstly as a Committee member (15 years now) and for the last 4 years as our League fixture Secretary. After the usual Secretary, Treasurer and Competition reports, there were 3 items under Notices of Motion. All three items were discussed fully by members either for or against and the following results were recorded.

The following two Rule changes had been recommended by the Executive Committee.

1: Team Competition Rules (Cup) rule 6 on page 53 of the current handbook.

Delete the present rule and replace with: In the event of a tie between the two competing teams the following will apply: The Team with the most Individual winners will go through to the next round. If there are an equal number of Individual winners then the team with the best Individual winner will go through, if the best Individual winners are tied, the next best Individual winner will count and likewise down the scale until the tie is decided.

Result 11 votes for and many more than 11 votes against.  Motion defeated

Individual & Doubles Competitions rules, numbers 1 and 2 on page 54 of the current handbook.

Rule 1: Delete present rule and replace with: Entry to all competitions shall be open to all bowlers registered with the Association, male or female and to all Life Members and Vice Presidents. Entry to all competitions will be free apart from our British Parks Individual Merit qualifying competition. The entry fee for the British Parks Individual Merit qualifying competition must be paid in advance and sent with the competition entry form to the competition Secretary.

Rule 2: Delete “an entry form” after “on” on the first line and enter “the British Parks Individual Merit Qualifying Competition”

Result 28 for. Motion carried unanimously.

West Kirby Victoria Bowling Club had made a proposal regarding the Spring, Isle of Man week.

Clubs wishing to postpone their League or Cup fixtures during the week of the Spring Isle of Man Festival should notify the Association Secretary, in writing, before January 7th each year, allowing the Secretary to arrange for any such club to have a blank fixture week. The Association Secretary will allocate a new date for any fixture that should have taken place in the Isle of Man week and this date must be adhered to by clubs not playing in the Isle of Man week.

Result 17 for 11 against, 2 abstentions. Motion carried.

British Parks

The members were also informed that our British Parks Senior County Championship teams for 2011 will be selected by five members of the Executive Committee therefore relieving the pressure on players selecting the teams and coming under increasing criticism regarding their selections. The Secretary thanked both Chris Barton and Geoff Lynch in his report for their efforts over the past two seasons and reported on the 2010 Parks season with Dave Gilmore, Craig Saville and Anthony Thompson receiving praise for winning all their 3 home matches. In the Secretary's opinion however Geoff Lynch was the player of the season for his excellent performance in winning all his three away matches in a group that included both the County Champions (East Midlands) and the runners up (Yorkshire). He also reported that Wallasey will be hosting the Veterans County Team Knockout next season.

Tommy Walker excels again as host of Charity Night

Tommy Walker is fast becoming the "Bruce Forsyth" of the Wallasey C.G.B.A. At last night's entertaining Charity night at Sacred Heart Bowling Club, Tommy once again had the audience roaring with laughter with his "one liners" and comic presentation of events. Claire House were the beneficiaries of the generosity of the Wallasey C.G.B.A. members and the Sacred Heart Parish Centre members when a cheque for £1026 was presented to them at the end of the evening by our Chairman, Mike Costall. The cheque included the £601 raised at our Charity Bowls day earlier in the summer. I would like to thank Tommy and his wife Joan, who did so much work in arranging last night's event and would also like to thank everyone involved with the raffles, auctions etc during the evening. A big thank you go to all the dancers from the Wallasey School of Ballet, for their brilliant performance in an entertaining selection of dance routines. They gave up their time free of charge and were a credit to their organisation and it was good to see so many young people prepared to help out the more needy amongst our local children. Once again we had our usual regular supporters at our fund raising events and I would like to thank the members of our County sides who  again contributed a great deal towards the funds raised. I don't normally mention Individual names of the people who attend  these events but I feel that , Chris Barton, Les Henderson, Frank O'Neill, Colin Saville, Craig Saville and Anthony Thompson along with our committee members, Sandra Astles, Mike Costall, Keith Etches, Ron Hitchmough and Andy Wainwright deserve recognition for their continued support to all things Wallasey Bowls. Of course it would be remiss of me not to mention, Bill Astles, Sylvia Costall, Doreen Hitchmough, Annie Metcalfe and Angie Saville who yet again gave us tremendous support at a Wallasey C.G.B.A. event. Thanks also to Ian Hazlehurst and Chris Morrison who,  although they don't play in the Wallasey Association any more, continue to support us at our events.

Monday November 8th

Charity Night at Sacred Heart

The Wallasey C.G.B.A. are holding a Charity Night at the Sacred Heart Parish Centre, Moreton, this coming Friday, November 12th. All proceeds, along with the £601 we raised at our Charity Bowling Day during the season, will go to Claire House. There will be a Five Piece Band, a performance from the excellent dancers from the Wallasey Dance School, Bingo, an Auction, the usual raffle and a disco. This promises to be a really entertaining evening and you can either pay on the door £5 or tickets are available from Tommy Walker at Sacred Heart or Mike Costall at Manor Road Bowling Club. Please do your best to support the Association and especially Claire House on Friday as with everything else these days, our local charities need, more than ever, financial backing at every opportunity. Our thanks must go to the Sacred Heart Club and especially Tommy Walker and his wife Joan, for their tremendous efforts in organising this event. The entertainment gets under way from 7-30pm and hopefully we can have a big turn out on the night.
