West Kirby Victoria unable to upset Meersbrook at Irlam.

West Kirby Victoria lost out 137-147 against Meersbrook (Yorkshire) in the first round of the British Team Championships at Irlam yesterday despite both sides having four winners each. Meersbrook, who had won the competition 2 years ago, used their experience of the tricky Irlam green to good effect, by pulling back from 10 shots down after 6 blocks to finally run out worthy winners. Robby Fitzpatrick 21-12, Steve Nugent 21-13, Jamie Fitzpatrick 21-19 and Matt Gilmore 21-19 were the four West Kirby winners on the day. The Vics will be hoping for better things in the British Crown Green Club Championships in Shrewsbury on April 27th.

Tommy flies high at Birkenhead Park

Tommy Walker won the latest and last round of the post Christmas "Flyers" at Birkenhead Park yesterday with an excellent 21-16 victory over Gerry Riley in a keenly contested final. Tommy qualifies for next Sunday's Finals Day and will be looking to carry forward his good form into a Finals Day comprising the top 16 players from the last 3 months competitions. Tommy had a hard earned 21-19 victory against Tony Cavanagh in his quarter final match and a fine 21-12 win against John Roberts in the semi final. Gerry had beaten Chris Mounsey 21-14 in his quarter final before overcoming Fred Arnell 21-15 in the semi final.

Thursday 20th March

Birkenhead & District British Parks County Team

The newly formed Birkenhead & District British Parks County side are looking to raise funds to ensure that they can compete in the British Parks C.G.B.A. Senior County Championship this year and beyond and they will be holding a race night on Friday April 11th at the Gladstone Club in Church Road, Birkenhead. The first race is scheduled for 7-30 pm and tickets can be obtained from Ian Hazlehurst, Colin Goulding or Mike Whalley at the Gladstone club. The Wallasey Association will be sponsoring a race at this event and hopefully as many Wallasey bowlers as possible will get along to support our neighbours from Birkenhead.

Hopefully the website is now operating properly

After the horrors of my computer hard drive packing in ten days ago and the thought of all my work having been lost, I hope that I have now fully retrieved all the work I had backed up on disk and the Wallasey C.G.B.A. website is now fully operational again. I would like to thank Dave Tinker from Heswall Royal British Legion and especially my daughter, Wendie, for their invaluable help in getting the site back online. Without their help I wouldn't have had a clue as to how to go about the repair work. Wendie lives in Los Angeles and with the time difference she has had to work to our time to help me out.

The "Roving Reporter" cracks it again, this time the opposition, not the "cake counter"

Our resident Wirral Globe bowls reporter, Billy Atkinson "cracked it" for the second time this week when he won the latest Sunday morning "Flyer" at Arrowe Park. After cracking a cake shop counter during his marauding run through France and Belgium last week, the local bowling talent on view at Arrowe Park this morning must have felt like papier mache to our undaunted hero. Billy easily accounted for Eddie Dutton 21-13 in his quarter final before overcoming Nick Woodward 21-17 in the semi. Up against one of his nemeses in the final, Billy once again bowled well to earn a deserved 21-17 triumph against Robby Fitzpatrick. One word of warning to cake shop owners on the Wirral, however, if you see the mild mannered Bill approaching, close up quick.

Quarter Final: W.Atkinson 21 E.Dutton 13,  N.Woodward 21 S.Scott 17,  R.Fitzpatrick 21 J.Hollywood 16,  R.Griffiths 21 M.Bolton 18.

Semi Final: W.Atkinson 21 N.Woodward 17,  R.Fitzpatrick 21 R.Griffiths 15

Final: W.Atkinson 21 R.Fitzpatrick 17

Saturday 23rd February

Tragic news from Arrowe Park Hospital as Dennis Bennett loses his fight against illness.

I am sorry to have to report the tragic news that Dennis Bennett, the Wirral & District C.G.B.A. Secretary / Treasurer, finally lost his fight against serious illness this afternoon. All our thoughts and sympathies go to his wife Kath and his family at this dreadfully sad time. Dennis was a tremendous servant to Wirral Bowls and he will be almost impossible to replace. I will post funeral arrangements as and when I have any news.

Saturday 23rd February

Divisional Cup venues updated

All the venues for the Preliminary and First Rounds of the Association, Harold Jones and Sheppick Cups can now be seen via their respective pages in the Team Competition section.

Saturday 23rd February

Wirral & District C.G.B.A. Secretary, Dennis Bennett.

Unfortunately the Wirral & District C.G.B.A. Secretary, Dennis Bennett, is critically ill in Arrowe Park hospital and therefore unable to carry out any of his duties as Financial / Secretary. The Wirral Chairman, Roy Cooke, has asked me to appeal for any volunteers to come forward and help with either the Secretary or Treasurer roles that Dennis has so expertly managed for such a long time. If you feel that you can help out in any way please contact Roy Cooke (Chairman) or John Griffiths (President) as soon as possible. Both their contact numbers appear in the 2007 Wirral handbook. All our thoughts and prayers go to Dennis's family at this crucial time and we hope for better news in the next few days.

Saturday 23rd February

Bad news , Good news as Wirral & District C.G.B.A. confirm withdrawal from British Parks

After the bad news that the Wirral & District C.G.B.A. Council ratified their decision to withdraw all their sides from this seasons British Parks County Championships, good news followed for local bowlers with the decision to reform the Senior County side under a new banner. A meeting between all the bowlers interested in playing in the Senior County side in the Parks Championship has come up with a formula to organise and finance themselves for 2008.

Sunday 17th February

Wallasey Secretary on holiday till next Monday

I am taking a short break in Belgium this week and will not be available for any queries until next Monday (February 25th). Please contact either Mike Costall or Keith Etches if you have urgent Wallasey C.G.B.A. queries. Both their telephone numbers are in the handbook.

Sunday 17th February

"D Day" looms for Wirral & District C.G.B.A. Senior Parks team.

The volunteers who have come forward to try and change the decision of the Wirral C.G.B.A. Council to pull out their Senior County side, as well as the Junior Side, from this season's British Parks County Championships, will meet with the Council tomorrow night at Cammell Laird Sports and Social Club. Organisation and finance of the County side ore the two issues to be thrashed out and hopefully the volunteers can guarantee both items have been solved and the Senior County side can be re-instated.

Sunday 17th February

Mick warms to freezing conditions to toast rivals in superb victory at the "Flyers"

Mick Andrews took a liking to the freezing conditions at Arrowe Park this morning to complete a superb victory in the latest final of the Sunday morning flyers. Mick won after a series of hard fought victories which included wins against both Fitzpatrick brothers culminating in a fine 21-17 victory over Jamie Fitzpatrick in the final.

Monday 11th February

Late developments may yet save Wirral Parks Senior County side.

After last Friday's news that the Wirral C.G.B.A. were going to withdraw their Senior County side from the British Parks County Championship, there have been behind the scenes moves to find volunteers and funding to properly organise the Senior side. Further developments are expected in the next few days.

Friday 8th February

Wirral C.G.B.A. withdraw their Senior and Junior sides from British Parks County Championships.

After an Extraordinary meeting was called by the Wirral & District C.G.B.A. Council last night, it was decided that both the Senior and Junior County sides would be withdrawn from the 2008 British Parks County Championships. It is hoped that the Gladstone Bowling Club will be able to defend their Inter Club Knockout title in September but this has yet to be confirmed.
