Rumours

As is normal at this time of year rumours abound about players moving clubs and indeed clubs dropping out of Associations. After last year's unfortunate late withdrawal from the Association by the Queens Royal "C" team, after all the fixtures had been published, there was an imbalance of teams in our 3 Divisions, 11 in Division One, 12 in Division Two and only 10 in Division Three. To help me (or indeed a new Secretary if I am not re-elected) organise the fixture list for next season, I would like to remind clubs that if they are withdrawing any teams from the Association for 2009, they must do so at least 7 days prior to the Annual General Meeting. It would help if I was to know earlier as, if any of the current rumours are true, we might be in a situation whereby we only have 2 Divisions next year. Whether any teams withdraw or not, I have had enquiries from at least 2 clubs about the possibility of us having only 2 Divisions anyway next season and this will be up for discussion at our next Executive Committee meeting on October 15th.

Gladstone Bowling Club

My report on yesterday's British Parks Club Team Knockout Championship contained the following sentence " There were a few unwanted spectators dancing on the green celebrating this decision from last years winners which did seem strange as they had been knocked out earlier in the day but never mind, if they were happy good luck to them."  This remark was never meant to be in anyway a derogatory comment about the Gladstone Bowling Club but only a personal opinion of mine that I thought it a strange reaction from the spectators concerned. The Wallasey C.G.B.A. and myself personally have never had any problems with the Gladstone Bowling Club and indeed we were very grateful that they allowed us to use their green yesterday for two of the matches in the competition. I apologise unreservedly to the Gladstone Bowling Club and all their members if my comment was construed as a derogatory comment but can only insist this was not meant to be so.

Sunday 14th September

Excellent days bowling ruined by farcical finish at Manor Road

After an excellent days bowling on seven superbly prepared greens today, the British Parks Club Team Knockout Competition ended in farce with West Kirby Victoria and Meersbrook agreeing to share the Trophy after the scores on one card could not be agreed. West Kirby Victoria thought they had just done enough to force a 178 -177 victory in an excellent final, played throughout with great sporting spirit by both sides, only to be robbed of victory when an error was found on one of the scorecards. Karl Sherbrooke having come off a 21-16 loser on the West Kirby card was marked as a 21-15 loser on the Meersbrook card. Remarkably, both scorers in this match had decided not to check card scores on the required ends and therefore there could be no going back to the previous checked end, as required when scorers cannot agree. Matt Gilmore 21-07, Dave Gilmore 21-13, Ian Sherbrooke 21-14 and Bill Atkinson 21-17 were all winners for West Kirby Victoria and along with the close losing cards of Jamie Fitzpatrick 20-21 and Steve Nugent 18-21, West Kirby thought that the Cup was theirs. The sting in the tale was to hit hard however with the rogue scorecard being scrutinised at the end of the match. With neither side prepared to firstly agree on the correct score, or indeed agree that it was in fact the scorers and not the Officials who were to blame, a decision had to be made by the British Parks President, Bill Maybry on how to solve the dispute. Despite unwanted representations by all and sundry around Match Officials, Bill's first idea of a 3 end play off and then secondly an 11 end play  off were not acceptable to both Captains. With the light fading fast on any possible playing option to decide the match, the two Captains then got together and decided between themselves that the best course of action was to share the trophy for 6 months each. Bill Maybry agreed that although not an ideal solution it was possibly best all round to accept this decision. There were a few unwanted spectators dancing on the green celebrating this decision from last years winners which did seem strange as they had been knocked out earlier in the day but never mind, if they were happy good luck to them. Finally Wallasey C.G.B.A. Chairman Mike Costall invited Bill Maybry to present the Cup to the two Captains. Mike thanked all the Clubs, Referees, Measurers and Officials who had helped to make this an excellent day and eventually all retired to the club house for a well earned drink and excellent buffet prepared by Sylvia Costall. Just one footnote to the days happening, B.C.G.B.A. Laws of the game 3: Scoring, section 3.4 The result of the end shall be clearly indicated, by the winner, to the markers who must sit together and agree each other's score cards every third end and at the end of the game. Obviously in the case of the Andy Whittaker- Karl Sherbrooke match, this was not the case and I fail to see how the match organiser can be to blame.

Tuesday 9th September

League Season Finished, Gladstone Squirrels safe, Magazine unfortunately relegated.

Gladstone Squirrels travelled to Sacred Heart "A" last night and with their 12½ points to 5 victory assured themselves safety from relegation from Division One. Unfortunately this means that Magazine will now take the drop but they have to be applauded for the rotation system of playing all their players in turn and not just playing their strongest team at all times. In operating this way, Magazine have shown that they put enjoyment before results, which to me is a refreshing change from the norm.

Friday 5th September

At last only one match left to play now, Sacred Heart safe.

As I write this, once again it is lashing down outside and in what has been one of the wettest summers for a long time, I am glad to report that we have only one League fixture to complete now. Sacred Heart "A", having beaten Queens Royal "B" this week, are now safe from relegation from Division One and with their last fixture against Gladstone Squirrels, yet again postponed because of the heavy rain, now being played on Monday the season will finally finish. Burton's and Poulton completed the Division Two fixtures this week and we now have to concentrate on preparing to host the British Parks Crown Green Bowling Association, Club Team Knockout Championship on Sunday September 14th.

Thursday 4th September

Magazine still hold on to slim chance of avoiding relegation, Hoylake Central safe.

As a result of Magazine Bowling Club's 12½ points to 5 victory away at Queens Royal "B", they have now finished their fixtures with 120½  points meaning that Gladstone Squirrels and Sacred Heart need to collect at least 1½ points each from their remaining matches to send Magazine down into Division Two. Hoylake Central are now safe from relegation with 122½ points. Queens Royal "B" team's outstanding fixture with West Kirby Victoria will now not be played and will be a void fixture in the League table. No other team in the Division will be affected by this decision as both West Kirby Victoria and Queens Royal "B" are either too far ahead or too far behind their nearest rivals in the League Table.

Wednesday 3rd September

Wallasey Festival & Junior Individual Merit Cancelled

With only 6 confirmed entries for the Wallasey Festival and only 1 entry for the Junior Individual Merit, both due to be staged this coming Sunday 7th September, we have no option but to cancel both events for 2008. Unfortunately we are not the only Association having trouble raising entries for Individual competitions but after last weeks successful staging of the Senior Individual Merit, we did think there would be sufficient interest for the Festival. I can only apologise to those people who had entered the competitions, we will have to think long and hard about our competitions in 2009 but if you have any suggestions please do not hesitate to contact us at any time.
