2008 Wallasey C.G.B.A. Individual Merit Competition

Incredibly, the Premier Wallasey C.G.B.A. Individual Competition, the Individual Merit, has attracted a mere 19 entries for next Monday's (July 7th) qualifying night. At tonight's Executive Committee meeting it was decided that, rather than cancel this event, as our rules now state that we should have a minimum of 32 entries to run a competition, we would re-open the competition for entries and the competition will now become a one day event on Sunday August 31st starting at 11-00am. I will be writing to all the clubs in the League trying to promote the competition and attract more entries. The Wallasey Individual Merit was first played in 1912 and after 96 years it would be criminal to cancel an event only previously cancelled because of World Wars. The competition will hopefully be held on the two greens at Marine Park, which I am happy to say have been returned to something like their best condition of a few years back, thanks to the help of the new permanent green keeper.

Charity Day success for Wirral Autistic Society

Wallasey bowlers did themselves proud once again this afternoon when the Annual Charity match between West Kirby Victoria and a Wallasey C.G.B.A. select side raised a magnificent £516 for the Wirral Autistic Society. With the pre match weather once again not in our favour, pouring rain again, the match was in danger of not taking place at all but with the afternoon sun arriving just in time the 30 bowlers taking part and all the spectators and members of the Manor Road Club did brilliantly in paying out for numerous raffle tickets. I would obviously like to thank everyone who helped out this afternoon, with a special mention to Doreen Hitchmough, who once again did brilliantly selling our raffle tickets. The players taking part all contributed to an excellent afternoon for the Wirral Autistic Society and even though the result on the green was really immaterial, there were some really good games with West Kirby Victoria retaining the George Gilmore Memorial Trophy yet again, this time by an 18 shot margin. Association Chairman, Mike Costall, after thanking all our sponsors and the players and the Manor Road Club asked Mrs. Ethel Gilmore to present the trophy to the acting West Kirby Captain, Nicky Gilmore.

Charity Match Line Ups

The teams for Sunday's (June 29th) Annual Charity Match for the George Gilmore Memorial Trophy can be seen below. This year's beneficiaries will be the Wirral Autistic Society based in Bromborough. In this, their 40th Anniversary Year they are aiming to build a 6 bedded autism-specific respite centre in the grounds of their main site at Raby Hall. Their target is to raise £1.3 m and any donations are very much appreciated. Spectators are encouraged to attend Sunday's event and help us to raise as much as we can to help the Wirral Autistic Society in their fund raising efforts. The match takes place at Manor Road Bowling Club starting at 1-00pm. I would like to thank all our sponsors for the event and all the players taking part, who all kindly donate £5 each towards the funds raised on the day.
