Dave and Matty Clash in Wirral Merit Final.

The Father and Son duo of Dave and Matty Gilmore fought their way to the Wirral Merit Final at the excellent Upton Victory Hall green this afternoon with Son, Matty, finally overcoming Dad, Dave, in a thrilling final full of fine bowls. After beating Steve Dawson 21-15 in the quarter finals Matty then beat Nick Burridge 21-18 in a magnificent semi final with both bowlers bowling top quality end after end. Dave had beaten Mike Brooke in his quarter final 21-13 and then beat John Finch 21-12 in the semi final before doing battle with Matty in the final. Dave and Matty produced excellent bowling with the lead changing hands several times until at 18-18 Matty finally took hold of the jack and ran out a deserved 21-18 winner. In winning the Trophy, Matty became the 1st player in the 100 years of this competition to win it three times in a row.

Dave Gilmore shakes hands with son Mathew Gilmore after Matty's Wirral Merit triumph against his Dad today.

Charity Match Postponed

Unfortunately this Sunday's Annual Charity Match has had to be postponed because of the expected heavy rain forecast for Sunday and Monday (It is after all a Bank Holiday weekend !!). The Match will be re-arranged for a later date and hopefully all the players and spectators planning to come this Sunday will attend on the new date. I am sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused but obviously an event like this really does need to be played in dry conditions.

Friday 25th May

League Fixtures

Club Secretaries are reminded that, as in our League rules, section 1, on page 56 of the current handbook, Fixtures as arranged are to be strictly adhered to. Clubs are not allowed to just re-arrange fixtures between themselves if a fixture date does not suit them and if any fixture is postponed because of bad weather or an unplayable green, the League Fixture Secretary, Mr. Colin Jones, must be informed immediately. In the case of a fixture postponement a new date must be arranged within one month of the original date and the Fixture Secretary advised accordingly.

Queens Royal "A" won tonight's Five A Side Cup Final against West Kirby Victoria "A" at Central Park with a 92 shots to 89 victory. With the scores from the first four blocks level, the match rested on Les Henderson's game with Dave Gilmore and this time Les ran out a 21-18 winner. Geoff Lynch Jnr. and Paul Saville were Royal's two other winners with Matt Gilmore and Anthony Thompson winning their games for West Kirby. The semi finals saw Queens Royal "A" defeat a valiant Bronze "B" side and West Kirby Victoria beating Queens Royal "B". This was a fine end to this pre-season competition and a fair crowd watched the final played on a good surface at the Number 1 green in Central Park. Association President, Keith Etches accompanied by Chairman, Mike Costall presented the trophy to a delighted Mike Nelson, Captain of Queens Royal "A".

Race Night

The Association managed to raise £457 towards their funds from last night's Race Night held at the Sacred Heart Club in Moreton. I would like to thank the Sacred Heart Club for allowing us to use their excellent facilities for our first venture into this kind of event. A special word of thanks also for Tommy Walker and his wife Joan for all their efforts in organising the evenings entertainment.  I would also like to thank all the ladies who helped out with the selling of the Tote tickets and Joe Connolly for his efforts with the raffle. Association Chairman, Mike Costall, seemed especially pleased with his night's entertainment and I think Channel 4 might be asking him for tips for their Morning Line show every Saturday after his extraordinary lucky run of success last night.

Tom Basnett Pairs

I have to own up to yet another error on my behalf, this time concerning the Tom Basnett Pairs Competition. I have put the Final Date on the Entry Forms as Saturday May 19th, this is in fact the closing date for Entries. The correct date of the Final is Saturday June 2nd with a 6-00pm start. I have to put this this error down to my worrying about Tranmere Rovers poor run of form at the moment.

Eric Gage

I am sorry to have to inform you of the tragic death of Executive Committee member Eric Gage, who was found dead at home on Tuesday evening. I do not have the full details as yet but will update as soon as I hear any more information. Eric was an excellent, hard working member of our Executive Committee and played for both Marine Park and Magazine Hotel Bowling clubs. Eric is obviously going to be missed by many people in the Wallasey Bowling community and the shock of his passing will take a long time for us to come to terms with. As soon as any funeral details are available I will post them on this site.

Referees Course

Syd Taylor would like to run a Referees Course (if there is sufficient interest) at the end of March /early April. The course would cost £6 including the cost of the examination. The course usually lasts for three/four sessions and the written examination - is not too onerous!  The Course is open to men and women. Anybody interested should phone Syd Taylor (0151) 327 3536 for more information.

Thursday 8th March

Race Night

The Association will be holding a Race Night on Friday 13th April (Grand National Eve) at the Sacred Heart Club in Moreton to help raise funds to counteract any future increases in fees to Clubs. With the kind permission of the Sacred Heart Bowling Club and especially Tommy Walker, who will be organising the event, we hope to involve as many Clubs as possible in this new venture. The evenings racing will commence at 8-00pm and tickets, priced at 50p, can be obtained from your Club. The 50p ticket can be used towards your bet on the 1st race of the evening. There will be 9 races during the evening and hopefully all the tickets will be sold for an evening that will eventually help in keeping your own Club's finances, as regards future League Fees, as low as possible. I will be writing to all Clubs in the Association within the next few days in the hope that each Club will purchase at least 4 tickets (total cost £2) for the event. If anyone would like to either sponsor a race (£10) or buy a horse (£3) please let me (Peter Dodd) or Tommy Walker at Sacred Heart know as soon as possible. You will of course be able to name any horse that you purchase. We are trying to take on board the comments made at the Annual General Meeting at the increase in cost to Clubs year by year and by holding this Race Night we hope to keep these costs as low
