Chris Barton & Craig Saville clinch Tom Bassnett Pairs Trophy
Queens Royal's Chris Barton and Craig Saville proved just too strong for the husband and wife pairing of Manor Road's, Bill and Sandra Astles in the Final of the Tom Bassnett Pairs at Magazine Bowling Club tonight. Chris and Craig were always in the driving seat against their opponents and apart from one tremendous end where Bill and Sandra completely surrounded the jack with four magnificent woods, the Queens Royal pairing had the edge throughout and won the match 21-13 despite some good bowling from the Manor Road duo. A competition which started at 6-00pm and didn't finish until 9-35pm, saw Chris and Craig defeat Ian Mitchell and Linda Mitchell 21-14 in a fine quarter final match before beating Mark Lynch and Colin Saville 21-16 in the semi final, Craig gaining revenge on his dad Colin for last year's final defeat. Bill and Sandra Astles had earlier beaten Peter Dodd and Keith Etches quite comfortably 21-11 before overcoming Kath Davies and Lynsey Gorman 21-16 in their semi final. The whole evening's bowling was played in a tremendous spirit and all the bowlers who made the finals night deserve great credit. The worthy winners received the new trophy, which was purchased with the help of a magnificent donation from Colin Saville, from Association President Keith Etches and Chairman, Mike Costall. I would like to thank all the spectators who turned up tonight and the Referee, Peter Fishwick and his wife Mary, who once again did a brilliant job with the raffle.

Individual Competitions
I include the following report from Wirral & District C.G.B.A. as a warning to local bowlers that Individual Competitions, that at one time used to attract upwards of 200 competitors, are now in serious danger of being struck off the local bowling calendar. The Wallasey C.G.B.A. Festival last year had to be cancelled because of lack of entries and indeed the Executive Committee have made a decision that we will not run competitions that do not attract at least 32 entrants. There are various reasons for the lack of entries with too much bowls, the same people winning, poor prize money ( the Wallasey C.G.B.A. only pay out entry fees received in prize money, we do not subsidise prize money) being just a few. The Wallasey Individual Merit started in 1912 with the Wallasey Festival starting in 1967.
If anyone has any ideas at all as to how we can attract more entries to these competitions, the Executive Committee would be pleased to listen to your suggestions but as things stand at the moment, these competitions are in grave danger of being lost to the bowling community of Wallasey.
The Wallasey C.G.B.A. British Parks Senior Individual Merit competition is not affected by the above as we do not pay out prize money for this event as entry fees go direct to British Parks as part of the entry fees for the National Finals. The winner and runner up from our qualifying competition ( Monday June 9th) are entered into the National Finals and we do help with their transport costs to the National Finals.
Wirral & District C.G.B.A. Senior Individual Merit 2008
In a battle of the brothers Finch from the Gladstone club it was older
brother John chirping loudest as he emerged the 21 - 17 victor over Ritchie in a
tremendous Wirral Association final full, of quality bowling. An early 10.00a.m.
start at the Albany green saw ten candidates fail at the first - they did not
arrive! Nevertheless despite a tricky green that has wintered poorly the
remaining twenty one bowlers produced a day of top class bowling. Many of the
matches were decided by fewer than four shots and the quarter-final between John
Finch and Nick Burridge was worthy of a Waterloo final with toucher after
toucher being delivered and then beaten - and on corner to corner marks. John
maintained his form in the semi-final to emerge a comfortable 21-04 victor over
Peter Holian from Lairds; while Ritchie had a fierce battle with clubmate John
Roberts to secure his final spot 21- 19.
Ritchie maintained his excellent form in the final and led 9-2, and again 11-9.
John then asserted himself to establish a 17-13 lead only for Ritchie to claw it
back to 16- 18. A rare poor lead gave John the chance to step in to clinch the
match with a double in a final that fully justified the status of the premier
individual event for Wirral's bowlers. Of some concern for the future of these
events however must be the continued slump in numbers entering the competitions
and in the apparent lack of interest from spectators. This season has already
seen a number of tournaments cancelled due to insufficient support and bowlers
will need to be aware of the maxim 'use it or lose it'.
Quarter -finals R.Finch (Glad) 21 - J. Smith (Lairds) 20; J.Roberts (Glad) 21 -
R.Preston (Lever) 13; J.Finch (Glad) 21 - N.Burridge (Glad) 17; P.Holian
(Lairds) 21 - M.Bolton (Lairds) 11; Sem-finals R.Finch 21 - J.Roberts 19; John
Finch 21 - P.Holian 04; Final J.Finch 21 R.Finch 17.

Sad news from Brighton Telegraph as Billy Roberts passes away
There was some sad news from The Brighton Telegraph Club this week with the loss of their President and founder member of the club, Billy Roberts, who died in hospital after being in intensive care for a short while. Billy was a former Secretary as well as a long time player at Brighton Telegraph and will be sorely missed his family and many friends in the local bowling community. Billy's family have requested that there be only family flowers at the funeral service to be held at Landican next Thursday, May 29th at 12 noon, but if there are any donations they should be made to the Royal British Legion as Billy was a long standing member of that institution and they will in fact be giving him a full flag bearing ceremony next Thursday. All our sympathies go to Billy's family at this sad time and the family would like to invite mourners to the Telegraph Public House in New Brighton after the funeral service.

Wallasey off to brilliant start in Division One
The Wallasey C.G.B.A. British Parks Senior County sides got off to a brilliant start to their 2008 Division One campaign with an overall 19 points to 12 win against last years Division One, Section "A" winners, North Staffordshire. In the home leg on the excellent Quarry Vikings green at New Brighton Cricket & Bowls Club, Wallasey had 9 winners with Anthony Thompson leading the way with an excellent 21-05 victory. Alan Bainbridge, Peter Birch and Mathew Gilmore all recorded fine 21-10 wins and Paul Johnson enjoyed himself on his home green to post a 21-13 winning card. Les Henderson came through as a 21-14 winner and a couple of tough games were won 21-18 by Dave Gilmore and Steve Scott. Craig Saville also had a tough encounter but as Captain of the side he showed great determination to triumph 21-19 and complete the 9 home winners and a final 50 shot victory for Wallasey. In the away leg, also played on an excellent London Road Bowling Club green in Newcastle under Lyme, Wallasey had 5 crucial away winners, with Steve Nugent leading the way from number 1 on the card with a really fine 21-11 win. There were excellent 21-13 winning performances from John Lloyd, Bill Jones and "The Old Growler" himself, Colin Saville. Neil Sherbrooke in winning 21-15 completed the 5 away winners for Wallasey and the whole team did well to keep the eventual losing margin to 34 shots and enable Wallasey to claim the vital extra 3 aggregate points for the overall winning score and give us a final 19-12 points winning tally. Next up is a fixture against East Midlands on Sunday June 15th.

Devastated Poulton have Club House burned to ground by vandals
Terrible news came from the Poulton Bowling Club today when they found that their Club House had been burned to the ground by vandals overnight. This fine old Club, actually 105 years old this year, have now been left without facilities and are in much need of assistance from any other clubs in the Wallasey & Wirral area. Poulton have lost all their equipment including all jacks, measuring equipment and members bowls etc. The bowling green is still in a playable condition and the toilet facilities at the top end of the green and the new shelter are also still intact but the devastation to the club is unbelievable and we must do all we can to help them in their hour of need. Please do not hesitate to contact me (Peter Dodd on 01928 716680) if you can help in any way or the Poulton Bowling Club Secretary, John Knowell Fenna on either 0151 609 0374 or 0778 755 8392.
