Sunday May 30th

Paul Saville wins Wallasey Parks Merit Title.

Queens Royal's Paul Saville survived 5 tough matches in winning today's Wallasey Parks Merit Title at Manor Road Bowling Club. Paul beat West Kirby Victoria's John Lloyd 21-15 in a game more even than the score suggests. The final had been very close with both players enjoying good little runs with the jack before Paul suddenly turned up the heat to take a 17-11 lead. John did manage to pull a few back but Paul played some good corner bowls to eventually run out a deserved 21-15 winner. Today's event was the second competition in a week for the Wallasey Association when all the entered competitors turned up. Today we had 30 fine bowlers in a competition once again expertly run by Keith Etches and after over 7 hours continuous bowling our 8 qualifiers for the British Parks C.G.B.A. National Individual Merit in August are: Bill Atkinson, Dave Croston, Les Henderson, John Lloyd, Craig Saville, Paul Saville, Karl Sherbrooke and Anthony Thompson.. Paul had beaten Bill Atkinson 21-17 in his semi final with John Lloyd beating Karl Sherbrooke 21-19 in his semi after a tremendous match.

James & David triumph in Tom Bassnett Pairs

James Fitzpatrick and Dave Gilmore captured the Tom Bassnett Pairs title at a wet Magazine Bowling Club last night with a fine 21-14 victory over Eddie Dutton and Geoff Lynch. Eddie and Geoff had started brightly, building up an early 08-01 lead thanks to a couple of 2's and a 3 but James and Dave replied with a couple of 2's and a 3 of their own and after 10 ends the match lay 9 across. At 10 across James and Dave found a length across the centre of the green that proved the turning point and built up an 18-10 lead that turned into 20-11 before Eddie and Geoff scored a 3, making it 14-21 but the fight back was short lived as James and Dave took the next end to capture the trophy for the 1st time. There were some good matches in the earlier rounds with all the bowlers on show producing excellent woods at one time or another and with heavy rain spoiling proceedings somewhat, the few spectators that braved the conditions did at least witness some fine matches. My thanks go to all the competitors, spectators, and scorers and especially to Peter Fishwick and Tommy Walker for doing the measuring.

Sandridge "B" team withdraw from Division Three.

I have to report the sad news that the Sandridge Club have decided to withdraw their "B" team from our Third Division. Despite the hard work of the Sandridge Secretary, Rick Keeley, to try and keep two teams in the Association, the Sandridge members voted at a meeting last night to withdraw the "B" team. The club wishes to apologise to all our member clubs for their action but with a dwindling playing membership due to various reasons, they felt it unfair to play matches with 3 or 4 players short all the time. Hopefully the club will be able to regroup and attract more members for next season and there will always be a place available for them in our Association. Because of a shortage of players and some bad weather the Sandridge "B" team have actually only played 2 matches so far this season and the results from those matches will now be expunged from our records. This does of course mean the the Third Division will now only consist of 10 teams and I can only apologise to Third Division clubs for the reduced number of fixtures.

Wallasey v East Midlands

Unfortunately we went down 11 points to 20 points against Eat Midlands today in our opening British Parks Senior County Championship match of the season. At Quarry Vikings we had 7 winners to 5 and won by 8 shots 220-212. Anthony Thompson and Dave Gilmore both won 21-12 with James Fitzpatrick and Craig Saville posting 21-13 wins. Allan Bainbridge 21-18, Brian Leonard 21-19 and Ian Sherbrooke 21-20 were our other winners. Unfortunately we lost 248-158 (10 winners to 2) at East Midlands  Geoff Lynch and Chris Barton both having good 21-19 wins. Chris was 9-19 down at one stage and Geoff also pulled back a substantial lead before winning. The green was cut very short and was consequently very quick. We have seen nothing like this on the Wirral for many a year. Why won't our green keepers cut the greens short? Full score sheets will be published tomorrow.

Magazine Pairs Cancelled for 2010

Magazine Bowling Club have regretfully asked us to publish the notice below.

It is with great regret that the committee of the Magazine Bowling Club have to cancel this years popular competition. As I am sure most people are aware that the Magazine Hotel is closed following a fire, we would not be able to provide the normal facilities expected by the competitors. At the moment we do not have any electricity supply and though work on repairing the premises is due to start on Wednesday 12th May, it is estimated that it will be at least the middle of next month before it is business as normal. We trust that you will all understand our unhappy decision and we will be back next year on the second Saturday in June as normal, when hopefully you will all be able to support us in raising money for a local charity, and of course enjoy a days bowling on our green.

Thursday May 6th

Postponing or calling off League Matches.

I would like to remind Club Secretaries of our Constitutional Laws concerning League Matches, which can be found on page 51 of the current 2010 Handbook and are printed below. Only under exceptional circumstances such as a deceased player, can scheduled matches be postponed or of course if the green is unplayable because of weather conditions. If your club has 3 or more players playing in the Isle of Man during their Spring or late Summer tournaments, permission will be granted by our Fixture Secretary ( Colin Jones) to rearrange your League match if a formal request is put in writing at least 3 weeks before the tournaments commence. Players on holiday during the season is not a sufficient excuse for cancelling fixtures. We have been quite lenient in the past when clubs have asked to rearrange fixtures but this has put the onus on a teams opponents to have to alter their playing plans and after a number of complaints we will now have to stop allowing  postponements other than for the reasons above. If you are having any difficulties with your scheduled fixtures please contact Colin Jones as early as possible. Colin's contact details are in the handbook and also on the results sheets.

Please remember all our Laws and Rules have been discussed and passed at our Annual General Meetings and if your club is not happy then it is up to you to put proposals in place to alter our rules at an A.G.M. These proposals would the be discussed and voted on as per usual.

Team Competition Rules

LEAGUE

1     Matches to be played home and away. The fixtures as arranged to be strictly adhered to. The leagues shall consist of three divisions except where the number on teams falls below 30; in such cases the Executive Committee has the power to restructure the leagues to one or two divisions. The top two in division two and three to be promoted and the two teams gaining the least points in division one and two shall be liable for relegation.

2     Teams shall consist of twelve players a side and the games played in singles only, 21 points to a game. The names of the opposing players must be drawn. All matches will be played with standard jacks, which are to be supplied by the home team. Visiting teams shall lead the jack.

3     The result of the competition to be decided on points. 1 point for each Individual Home winner, 1½ points for each Individual Away winner and 2 points for the Team winning the match on total score e.g. (235-192). In the event of a tie on points, the Championship will be decided by the team with the most number of match winning points. Where match winning points are equal, then a play off will decide, on a neutral green, the date and green to be arranged by the Executive Committee.

4     Any club failing to play as appointed, will be scratched and required to concede the full number of points to its opponents and render themselves liable to a fine, such fine being determined by the Executive Committee. Only if the greens are unplayable in which case the clubs concerned are mutually to agree upon a date, such date being within one month of the said fixture and advise the Association Secretary within three days. All matches must be completed by the 1st September. Should they fail to make such arrangement they are to submit to the Committees ruling in the matter. In the event of an adjournment the completed games stand and the partly finished games shall be concluded from the scores at the adjournment.

5     All competitive clubs in the Association shall provide standard jacks, mats, a tape no less than 19 metres and appropriate measures.

6     No practice by visiting teams will be allowed prior to commencement of a match.

7     In the event of a club withdrawing from the league competition at any time during the playing season, irrespective of the number of games played, the record of that club shall be expunged from the league.
