Birkenhead & Wirral Crown Green Bowling League "Website"
Brian Hampson has produced an excellent website for the Birkenhead League, which includes League and Cup results for both the "Afternoon" and "Evening" sections of the B&W C.G.B.L. League tables and fixtures can also be accessed via the site and knowing Brian, all sorts of information will soon be winging it's way onto the site. The website can be reached via www.birkenheadleague.co.uk I have put a link on our links page accessed via the appropriate section in our heading box above.

Manor's Magic "Mitch" makes mark in Merit
Manor Road's, Ian Mitchell made his mark on the Wallasey C.G.B.A. Veterans Individual Merit Competition last night with a fine 21-18 victory against West Kirby Victoria's Billy Atkinson in a high quality Final at Wallasey Royal British Legion. Ian had to come through 3 tough matches to win the Title. In a nip and tuck Quarter Final against Ray Woods, Ian gained a winning advantage from 14-14 across to lead 20-16 before 3 singles to Ray brought the game to 20-19, Ian then finally taking the next point for a close 21-19 victory. In an epic Semi Final match against Dave Croston, Ian forged an early 08-01 lead only for Dave to fight back and make the scores 11 across. Dave then came alight to force an 18-13 and then a 20-14 lead only to bowl a loose end and see Ian take 7 on the trot and win 21-20. The Final against Billy Atkinson saw Bill take an early 06-03 lead before Ian clawed his way back into the match at 13 across. Ian was not to lose the lead again but Billy did level at 18 across only for 3 singles to Ian taking the score to 21-18 and making Ian the 2009 champion atoning up for his defeat in last years final. Billy had won his Quarter Final match 21-13 and his Semi Final 21-09 in two fine performances to take him into the Final. I would like to thank the Wallasey R.B.L. Club for allowing us to use their green last night and our Referee, Peter Fishwick for his usual impeccable performance. I would also like to thank Mary Fishwick and Colin Jones for doing the measuring on the night. Association President, Keith Etches asked Les Henderson to present the Trophy to Ian Mitchell, Les having kindly donated the Trophy for the Veterans a few years back. I would also like to thank Ron Hitchmough for his continued support in sponsoring our Veterans Competition and all the spectators who turned up to support the "Lads" on the night.

New Secretary
There is a good possibility that I will be calling it a day as Secretary and Treasurer of the Wallasey C.G.B.A. at this years Annual General Meeting and to be fair to an incoming member willing to take on the roles, I invite applications for the above positions now. I will endeavour to give as much assistance as I can to help whoever is prepared to take on the task of keeping the Wallasey Association in the forefront of local bowls. I am afraid the constant backbiting and badgering has finally worn me down and I look forward to a complete rest from Administration at all levels.

Weekly Draw
The numbers drawn in the Weekly Draw today were 1,3,6,10,19,20 The Jackpot was not won and will be £140 from 19 numbers next week. The £30 consolation prize was paid out to a deserving Tranmere Rovers supporter, who I believe might donate the money to Rovers to help the club in their time of need, rather than spend it at the Manor Road club.
Sunday June 21st
Poulton Bowling Club
The Poulton Bowling Club would like to apologise to all visitors to their Club for the present state of their green. Some work on the green earlier in the season has actually produced an adverse effect on the grass and the playing surface has deteriorated in certain areas. The Club have been working non stop this weekend in an effort to repair as much of the damage as possible and only time will tell as to the effectiveness of this work. Would all visiting teams please show some sympathy towards the Poulton members, who remember, have already had to cope with their bowling hut having been destroyed by arson from the local vandals.

Divisional Cup Semi Final Results
Tuesday's results from the Divisional Cup Semi Finals have now been updated. The Harold Jones Cup Final will be between two surprise teams in Hoylake Central and Sandridge. Congratulations to both Clubs on their efforts and hopefully an exciting Final is in prospect despite the absence of either of the big two (Queens Royal & West Kirby Victoria) for the first time in many a year. The Sheppick Cup will feature Wallasey Royal British Legion against either Hoylake Central "B" or Sacred Heart "B", who will play their Semi Final match next Wednesday. Manor Road "C" will play Wallasey Royal British Legion "B" in the Association Cup Final after both had convincing Semi Final victories in their matches this week.

Sad news from Liscard last week
There was some sad news from the Liscard Bowling Club on Thursday of last week, with the passing away of one the unsung heroes of bowls, Sid Davies. Sid was a great clubman and supported Liscard at all home games. He was a gentleman and one of the most unselfish people you could wish to meet. He took a lot of the younger bowlers at Liscard under his wing & was a father figure to many of them. Sid unfortunately had Alzheimer's in the later stages of his life and he was 89 when he finally passed away. The Funeral Service is due to take place at the Centre Chapel at Landican on Monday June 22nd at 2-00pm.
Sunday June 14th
Dave Gilmore wins his 3rd Wallasey Individual Merit Title
Dave Gilmore (West Kirby Victoria) won his 3rd Wallasey Merit Title this afternoon, at a sun drenched Royden Hall green, with a fine 21-16 win against Steve Scott (Queens Royal) in an excellent Final. On a wonderful green at Royden, the final was nip and tuck all the way with both bowlers having little runs with the jack up to Steve leading 15-13 but Dave then took control with a crucial break of 6 to lead 19-15 and after Steve had clawed one back to 16-19, 2 more singles to Dave saw him to victory and his 3rd Title to go with his wins in 1991 and 1999. Dave had earlier beaten Dave Croston 21-10, Eddie Clayburn 21-18 and Geoff Lynch 21-15 on his way to the Final. Steve Scott had beaten Peter Dodd 21-20, Curtis Tornerup 21-19, Les Henderson 21-11 and Frank O'Neill 21-16 on his way to the Final. An excellent competition saw many close matches and Dave Gilmore was a worthy winner at the end of a baking hot afternoon. Dave's win saw him pull level with Son, Mathew at 3 Merit Titles each. Thanks were given to the Royden Hall Bowling Club for the use of their excellent facilities and also to Executive Committee member, Tommy Walker, who did a brilliant job of officiating throughout the day on his 60th Birthday.

Wallasey C.G.B.A. Divisional Representative matches v Bebington & District League
Discussions are ongoing about a series of three representative bowls matches played between the Wallasey Crown Green Bowling Association and the Bebington & District Bowling League, during the months of July and August.
The first match, which will hosted by The Wallasey Crown Green Bowling Association will comprise of only players who play for teams in Division 3 of their respective league. The second match, which will be hosted by The Bebington Bowling League will comprise of only players who play for teams in Division 2 of their respective leagues. Finally the third match, which will again be hosted by The Wallasey Crown Green Bowling Association will comprise of only players who play for teams in Division 1 of their respective leagues.
Selection for the representative matches will be made as follows, The Bebington League will request that each team playing in the appropriate division select a player to represent that team and therefore their league in a full representative match.
The Wallasey Crown Green Bowling Association will request each Club in Division Three to select a player to represent their Division and the extra five players required to form a team of 14 will be selected by the Executive Committee, with no Club having more than two players in the representative side. For the Division Two and Division One matches, each Club in those Divisions will be requested to provide one player with the extra 3 players again selected by the Executive Committee. Once again no Club will have more than two players in the side. Players who already represent the Association in British Parks County Matches will not be considered for any of these matches. The format for each of the matches will be like all other representative matches, and will comprise of 14 players on each side. Full dress code will be observed on the day and hopefully all three matches will be played in a competitive spirit and enjoyed by all bowlers, who for one reason or another, have not managed to play in a representative match before.

Welcome Donation for Wallasey Merit from one of our most respected bowlers
One of the most respected bowlers in the Wallasey Association has made a generous donation towards the prize money for next weeks Wallasey Individual Merit Competition. After representing the County Team with honour over many years, the player, who wishes to remain anonymous, felt that he would like to put something back into Wallasey Bowls and has given our Senior Individual Competition a welcome boost. We gratefully thank the player concerned and hope that the turn out for the One Day Competition on Sunday June 14th justifies the faith shown in the Wallasey Association by our anonymous donor. Details of the venue for the Merit will be published as soon as all the Entries are confirmed.

Charity Day success for Cancer Research Centre
The Wallasey C.G.B.A. Annual Charity Day proved to be a great success for the Clatterbridge Hospice Cancer Research Centre yesterday, when a Challenge Match between the Association's Home and Away County Sides, produced a magnificent £511 on the day for the Research Centre. On a day of brilliant sunshine and on a quick Manor Road green, the Away side turned out to be the winners of the Challenge Match by 45 shots. A special thank you goes to young Nieve, who did brilliant work in raising £168 on the day's raffle and she went round the green more times than Chris Barton managed in his 2 matches during the day. I must make an apology to Mrs. Ethel Gilmore who was invited to attend to present the George Gilmore Memorial Trophy to the winning Captains and amidst all the confusion at the end of the match we forgot to ask Ethel onto the green. We are really sorry Ethel and thank you for attending and for your generous donation to the event. Association Chairman, Mike Costall presented a cheque to Jo Parry, the Research Centre Fund Raising Organiser, who thanked everyone for their help in raising such an amount in one afternoon for the Centre.

Time for me to go ? (Veterans Merit)
I think the time has arrived for me to go, another error in my work I'm afraid (don't be too hard on me Sav). Unfortunately, I sent out the Entry forms for the Veterans Merit competition last week with the wrong dates on them and lo and behold, the sharp eyed Vets picked up on it straight away and were not slow to let me know about it. I have sent new Entry Forms to each Club today with the correct dates on them and can only apologise if anyone is not available to play now. The correct dates are: Qualifying Night, Tuesday 23rd June - Finals Night, Saturday 27th June at 6-00pm. I have also sent out League Tables today and will in future send a League Table in the last week of every month.

Wallasey C.G.B.A. Annual Charity Day
This year's Charity Day takes place this coming Sunday with a Challenge Match between our British Parks home and away County sides. The match starts at 1-00pm at Manor Road Bowling Club and hopefully, in view of the good weather forecast, we can attract a decent turn out of spectators to see some top class bowling. The Charity we are supporting this year is the Clatterbridge Hospice Cancer Research Unit and this worthy Charity will have a Representative at Sunday's match. Can all players selected for the "Home Side" on Sunday please play in their Wallasey County Shirt, with the players selected for the "Away Side" playing in their own Club Shirts. Because of the previous day's F.A.Cup Final and with some players originally selected still not returning home from Wembley before Sunday's match, some guest bowlers have been included in the line ups

Jack Beecham wins Wirral Merit Title
WIRRAL MERIT
Jack Beecham (Harrison Park & Tixall) won yesterday's Wirral Merit Competition beating West Kirby Victoria's Anthony Thompson 21-20 in an excellent final. Jack was 16-19 down to John Hignett Jnr in his Quarter Final before coming through 21-19 and was in even worse trouble against Anthony Thompson in the Final at 13-19 down before using all his experience to finally pull through and take the title with a thrilling 21-20 victory.
Quarter-Finals: Phil Neilson (Pensby)
18, Mal Andrews (West Kirby Victoria) 21; Anthony Thompson (West Kirby Victoria)
21, John Ellis (Gladstone) 10; Ian Hazlehurst (Gladstone) 5, John Devlin (West

Starting time for League Matches
It is wholly unacceptable for League Matches to start after 6-30pm because of the lack of Home team players at the venue. I must insist that each Club ensures that they have sufficient players available for both teams to start the first four at 6-30pm. If what happened on Thursday occurs again this season, then the Club concerned will have to appear before the Executive Committee to explain themselves and accept the possible repercussions.

Tom Bassnett Pairs postponed until August
Due to a few unforeseen circumstances, Everton reaching the F.A. Cup Final being one of them, the Tom Bassnett Pairs competition has had to be postponed until a later date in the season, more likely some time in August. Possibly because the Final was scheduled for May 30th, F.A. Cup Final Day, entries this year were well down on previous years and it would not have been possible to go ahead with the qualifiers next week. This competition is one of our most popular and we are now looking at dates in August to stage it. I have sent out entry forms this week to all clubs for the Wallasey Individual Merit, the Veterans Merit and the Tony Vyskocil Memorial 31 Up competitions. Please ask your club Secretary for details.

Chris Barton wins Wallasey C.G.B.A., British Parks Merit Title.
Queens Royal's Chris Barton won his second competition in a fortnight at New Brighton Cricket and Bowling Club today, when adding the Wallasey C.G.B.A. British Parks Merit Title to his previous victory in the New Brighton Classic. Chris took full advantage of playing on the green of Quarry Vikings Bowling Club, which was in excellent condition despite the heavy rainfall this morning and the showers during the afternoon, to win five matches on the day and prove a worthy 21-08 winner against West Kirby Victoria's Jamie Fitzpatrick in the Final. A good turnout of 25 players started out at 1-00pm with 9 Preliminary Round matches, the pick of which was Matt Gilmore's 21-20 victory over Craig Saville. Matt had built up an early 13-07 lead before Craig fought back to level at 16-16 and eventually lie 20-18 up but Matt held his nerve to eventually win by the closest of margins. Chris Barton started off his day's work with a 21-12 win against Andy Wainwright and Jamie Fitzpatrick defeated Tommy Walker 21-09 in his opening game. The First Round proper saw 2 more titanic matches with Anthony Thompson defeating John Lloyd 21-20 and Billy Atkinson doing the same against Les Henderson. Anthony took an early 10-06 lead against John before John piled on the points to lead 19-13. Anthony pulled back to 18-18, 19-19 and 20 across before finally just getting over the line at 21-20. Billy and Les were involved in a match in which both players had little runs with the Jack, Les taking an early 09-05 lead only to find himself 10-09 down and then 14-10 up. Billy responded to take an 18-14 lead only for Les to go 19-18 up, a 2 for Billy and a single for Les had the score at 20 across but Billy took the next point against the Jack to win 21-20. Chris Barton defeated John Devlin 21-14 with Jamie Fitzpatrick getting home 21-13 against Paul Saville. Arguably, the match of the day saw West Kirby Victoria club mates Matt Gilmore and Anthony Thompson serve up a treat for the spectators with another high class 21-20 match. Anthony, fresh from his previous match with John Lloyd took advantage of Matt's longer break on the sidelines, to bowl superbly well and build up a stunning 16-03 lead with tremendous leads. Matt responded with some tremendous leads of his own to incredibly go 18-17 up and then 20-19 up before giving Anthony a chance to win the match with his two woods about a yard through. Anthony's first wood was counting and coming in for game, for once, his delivery was not right and he stopped just short, which left the score tied at 20 across. Anthony bowled the Jack to the far corner of the green but his two woods were short leaving Matt the chance to draw and win the match 21-20. The bowling in this match was of the highest standard and credit goes to both bowlers who never gave up throughout. Chris Barton continued on his merry way with a fine 21-11 win against Dave Gilmore and Jamie Fitzpatrick defeated Bill Astles by the same score. Colin Saville completed the Semi Final entrants when he defeated Billy Atkinson 21-17 in his Quarter Final match. The Semi Finals saw Jamie Fitzpatrick playing at the top of his game to defeat Matt Gilmore 21-10 in a somewhat surprising score line and Chris Barton beating Colin Saville 21-13 in a game in which Colin just couldn't get a run with the Jack. Jamie Fitzpatrick started off the Final with a 2 against Chris Barton but the possible crucial end of the match came as early as the 2nd end when Chris fired and knocked the Jack into the ditch. Jamie made a bad lead and Chris had 3 two's on the trot to take a 06-02 lead. Jamie fought back to 6 across but a stunning break of 13 shots to Chris saw him into a match winning 19-06 lead. Jamie managed 2 more singles but Chris, as in the New Brighton Classic, was not to be beaten and 2 singles saw him complete an excellent day's work with a 21-08 winning score. Matt Gilmore, Colin Saville, Jamie Fitzpatrick and Chris Barton will now represent Wallasey at the British Parks C.G.B.A. Senior Individual Merit Finals on August 9th at a venue in East Midlands. Chris will also be entered into the special Waterloo Competition being run later in the year by Jimmy Parker. Thanks must go to New Brighton Cricket and Bowling Club and the Quarry Vikings Bowling Club for allowing us to use their excellent green this afternoon. A big thank you also to our Competition Secretary, Keith Etches for once again organising the event to his normal high standards. Thank you also to all the Players who took part today as without you I might have had to watch Liverpool on the Tv.

Missing Jack
Manor Road Bowling Club have reported to me that one of their new Jacks and a mat have disappeared after one of the many cup games staged on their green during the last week. If any player has inadvertently put them in his bag after one of the games, could he or she please return it to the Manor Road Club. The new black Jack is easily distinguishable as it has the letters M.R.B.C, stamped on it. These Jacks cost £28 each and obviously any Club cannot afford to lose Jacks in this way.

Chris captures Classic Crown
Chris Barton did both himself and Wallasey Bowls proud on Monday with a tremendous day's bowling that saw him win the New Brighton Classic at New Brighton Cricket & Bowling Club. In a competition supremely well run by the New Brighton Classic Committee, Chris had to play 6 games before he could get his hands on the Trophy. Having beaten Ray Jones 21-17, Nigel Hughes 21-12 and Arthur Land 21-04, Chris came up against one of the tournament favourites, Nick Burridge, in the Quarter Finals. Chris bowled superbly well against Nick to post a fine 21-14 win and consequently qualified to play Mick Andrews in the Semi Final. Chris again found a mark along the top edge of the green to forge an early 16-04 lead but Mick came back strongly on a much longer corner mark to be within a point at 17-18 before Chris finally ran out a 21-18 winner. Chris came up against his fourth Gladstone opponent of the day in Ian Hazlehurst in the final and despite a few scares was generally in control of the match to win 21-16 and collect the silverware from the Merseyside County Secretary, Pat Crowther. On a freezing cold day at New Brighton congratulations must go to all the bowlers taking part in the Tournament and it was interesting to note 7 of the 8 Quarter Finalists were from either Wallasey or Birkenhead clubs. Ian Hazlehurst also played well throughout the day and had beaten last year's winner, Rob Fitzpatrick 21-16 in his Semi Final match.

Magazine Charity Cup (Invitation Pairs) 2009
The Magazine Bowling Club once again invite entries from all our members to participate in their Annual Competition, which this year will be held on Saturday 13th June. As always, free refreshments will be provided for all competitors, and of course their "Home Pub" will be open for business on the day, selling the usual fine selection of beers, wines and good food. Last year the Magazine were able to donate £800 to the Wirral Society of the Blind and Partially Sighted. They are again anxious to make the event a success for the benefit of a local charity, which this year is Claire House. Please ensure that your entry, together with the appropriate entry fee, is returned by Monday 25th May at the latest. All clubs should now have received an entry form and you should ask your club Secretary for details or contact Sam Robinson on 0151 638 0394 if you have a problem locating an entry form. This year, because of the continued popularity of the event, the competition will be restricted to 64 pairs, to enable to competition to be completed in one day. Remember, get your entry in early to ensure a place in this very enjoyable competition run by the excellent Magazine Bowling Club.

Race Night
Despite the disappointing attendance from our members on a night when there were no Birkenhead League fixtures I would like to thank Tommy Walker and his wife, Joan, for all their tireless work both last night and in the weeks leading up to the Race Night. Thanks to their efforts and to the support given to us on the night by the members of Manor Road, Queens Royal, Sacred Heart, Hoylake Central, Sandridge, Telegraph and the social members of the Sacred Heart Club, we did manage to raise £450 for the Association. I would like to say a special thank you to 4 members of the Birkenhead & District Parks Team, Ian Hazlehurst, Mick Andrews and John and Richard Finch, who not only turned up on the night to support us but gave us great financial support in the way of sponsoring races etc. It is interesting to note that after a lot of adverse publicity on the Wirral Bowls Forum about the Gladstone Bowling Club, all 4 Birkenhead Parks members actually play for Gladstone. The night was very enjoyable for the people who did turn up but I am at a loss to explain or indeed to know how we can get more Clubs and players from Wallasey to give us support in our fund raising efforts.
Friday May 1st
Moreton R.B.L.
Unfortunately due to circumstances beyond their control, the Moreton R.B.L. Club cannot provide separate Ladies and Gents toilet facilities at their green at this moment in time. For the time being we have decided not to use the green for Cup Matches and the scheduled Harold Jones Cup match between Manor Road "A" and Hoylake Central will now take place at Harrison Park on Tuesday May 5th. The scheduled Association Cup match between Sacred Heart "C" and Royden Hall will now take place at Liscard on Thursday May 7th. There is a Portaloo at the green in Moreton and the club are trying to get another one on site in the near future. Moreton R.B.L. Bowling Club are in no way to blame for the current situation and have assured us that the current Portaloo is professionally cleaned as often as possible.
