Wallasey R.B.L. withdraw "C" Team

Unfortunately, due to insufficient playing members, Wallasey Royal British Legion Bowling Club have withdrawn their ""C" from the Association for the 2011 season. We are obviously disappointed with their decision to do so but fully understand the difficulties the club had in fulfilling all their fixtures during the 2010 season. We thank all the players for their efforts in completing all their fixtures and will welcome them back into the Association at any time, if they feel that in future seasons there are sufficient playing members for them to consider reforming a "C" team.

As this is the rumour season, I have heard that there are one or two other clubs in difficulty and possibly thinking of withdrawing teams from next seasons competitions, I would like to remind clubs that we will do anything within our powers to help clubs in some distress. I would however like to remind all clubs that our Constitutional Laws  (Number 3 on page 46 of the current handbook) require clubs to inform me by January 14th each year if they wish to withdraw any teams from the Association. I would also like to point out that with the withdrawal of the Wallasey RBL "C" team, we now only have 31 teams at present in the Association and are dangerously close to the cut off point for operating just two Divisions. The Executive Committee are mandated to consider the two Division option if our membership falls below 30 teams. (League Rule Number 1 on page 51 of the current handbook.) Considering this possible action, I would very much appreciate the help of any club Secretary who may be thinking of withdrawing a team for next season, to let me know as early as possible (our A.G.M. would be ideal) to enable me to organise Divisions and fixtures for 2011.

Notices of Motion

The following Notices of Motion and a proposal from West Kirby Victoria Bowling Club will be put before the Annual General Meeting on November 24th, to be held at Manor Road Bowling Club. Clubs wishing to make any amendments to the motions or proposal should do so, in writing, to the Association Secretary before October 31st.

The following Rule changes have been recommended by the Executive Committee.

Team Competition Rules (Cup) rule 6 on page 53 of the current handbook.

Delete the present rule and replace with: In the event of a tie between the two competing teams the following will apply: The Team with the most Individual winners will go through to the next round. If there are an equal number of Individual winners then the team with the best Individual winner will go through, if the best Individual winners are tied, the next best Individual winner will count and likewise down the scale until the tie is decided.

Individual & Doubles Competitions rules, numbers 1 and 2 on page 54 of the current handbook.

Rule 1: Delete present rule and replace with: Entry to all competitions shall be open to all bowlers registered with the Association, male or female and to all Life Members and Vice Presidents. Entry to all competitions will be free apart from our British Parks Individual Merit qualifying competition. The entry fee for the British Parks Individual Merit qualifying competition must be paid in advance and sent with the competition entry form to the competition Secretary.

Rule 2: Delete “an entry form” after “on” on the first line and enter “the British Parks Individual Merit Qualifying Competition”

West Kirby Victoria Bowling Club have made a proposal regarding the Spring, Isle of Man week.

Clubs wishing to postpone their League or Cup fixtures during the week of the Spring Isle of Man Festival should notify the Association Secretary, in writing, before January 7th each year, allowing the Secretary to arrange for any such club to have a blank fixture week. The Association Secretary will allocate a new date for any fixture that should have taken place in the Isle of Man week and this date must be adhered to by clubs not playing in the Isle of Man week.

Craig Saville is "King Of Wallasey" for the second time

Queens Royal's Craig Saville became "King Of Wallasey" for the second time in five years today with an excellent 21-06 victory over Ian Birch in the 2010 Wallasey C.G.B.A. Individual Merit competition held on the pristine Manor Road Bowling Club green. A fine turn out of 32 players took part in today's competition and Craig was a worthy winner, bowling consistently well throughout his five matches. Having beaten Ken Howard (21-12) and Joan Walker (21-14) in the earlier rounds Craig came up against Dave Gilmore in the Quarter Finals and a high quality match saw Craig eventually defeat Dave 21-19. Craig then defeated Tommy Walker 21-10 in the Semi Final before his impressive display in the Final. Ian Birch, after defeating John Lloyd (21-17) and Malcolm Johnson (21-09) in the early rounds, came up against Peter Dodd in the Quarter Finals and fought back from 03-09 down to eventually win a keenly contested match 21-19. Ian then defeated Jack Beecham 21-14 in a corner to corner Semi Final match before having to give second best to Craig in the Final. I would like to thank all the bowlers who turned up today, Peter Fishwick, who refereed the competition from start to finish and Keith Etches for his usual excellent work in organising the competition. I would also like to thank the Manor Road Bowling Club for their hospitality throughout the day and Colin Jones for cutting the green at 0930 this morning. All in all this was a wonderful day's bowling with many players not normally seen entering our Individual competitions, enjoying keen competitive matches, played in great spirit throughout the day.

2010 Wallasey Individual Merit

As reported earlier we did not have sufficient entries for the 2010 Wallasey Individual Merit Competition to be able to hold the competition. However, at our last monthly Executive Committee Meeting we decided to have one last attempt at running our most prestigious Individual Competition. We have decided that it will be a one day competition to be held on Saturday, October 2nd at Manor Road Bowling Club. There will be no entry fee and there will be no prize money. The honour of being the Wallasey Individual Merit Champion for 2010 should, in our opinion, be sufficient to draw enough entries. The event will be open to all Wallasey Association registered bowlers, male or female and to all Life Members and Vice Presidents, anybody wishing to enter should report to Manor Road Bowling Club by 10-30am at the latest on Saturday October 2nd. The draw will be made at 10-45 am from all the competitors at the venue and no one will be allowed to enter after the 10-30am deadline. There is no need to fill an entry form but if you wish to contact our Competition Secretary, Keith Etches, you will find his contact number in the current handbook. This competition was first held in 1912 and has been played every year since then apart from the war years of 1940-1945, the competition was even held during the 1st World War years of 1914-1918. The competition will go ahead on October 2nd even if there are only two entries on the day. To me, it is a sad indictment of Wallasey Bowls that we have been forced into making this decision but we feel that it is imperative that this competition is played this year. Unfortunately we do not have any dates left to play either the Wallasey Festival or the Veterans Individual Merit Competitions. The recognised B.C.G.B.A. dress code will apply to this event as it is a Finals day and please remember also, that this is a merit competition and home bowlers from the Manor Road Bowling Club will not be penalised any shots, all matches will be 21up off scratch.

Monday September 27th

Reminder to Clubs

I would like to respectfully remind all clubs that the deadline day for any proposals of Notices of Motion for the Annual General Meeting and for the payment of your 2nd Accounts is this coming Thursday (September 30th). To date I have not received any proposals at all from any club in the Association, which does surprise me as I had been approached by members about concerns over various subjects during the season such as Starred Players, Handicaps, Individual Competitions, Isle of Man Week etc. and my reply to them was that, if they did not agree with anything that we do, then the Annual General Meeting was the place to alter any of our rules etc. that they felt were maybe unfair or needed a bit of fine tuning. I can say that the Executive Committee will be recommending some slight rule changes in our Team and Individual Competitions, especially for drawn matches in Team Competitions but must stress that it is up to the Clubs themselves to try and get things altered that they feel may need altering. I would like thank all Club Secretaries & Treasurers for their prompt payments of their 2nd Accounts this year, to date I am only waiting for 1 more payment to be made.

West Kirby Victoria complete "Treble" with Five A Side Cup Victory

West Kirby Victoria added the Five A Side Cup on Saturday to their Division One Title and the Presidents Cup, to complete a 2010 treble winning season. The semi finals and final of the Five A Side competition took place at the excellent Royden Hall venue last Saturday evening and West Kirby Victoria defeated a strong Sacred Heart "D" team in their semi final match by 16 shots, with Lee Brocklebank producing an outstanding 21-06 win. Tommy Walker was the only Sacred Heart winner with an excellent 21-14 victory. The other semi final saw Queens Royal "B" defeat Hoylake Central by 21 shots with Brian Leonard the star of the show with a quality 21-09 win. Ian Hamilton proved to be Hoylake's only winner posting a hard fought 21-17 winning card. The final saw West Kirby Victoria get off to a flying start with a stunning 21-06 win for Jamie Fitzpatrick and despite Steve Scott's fine 21-14 victory for Queens Royal "B", the Vics had 3 more winners in Matt Gilmore 21-12, Dave Gilmore 21-13 and Lee Brocklebank 21-19 to complete a comfortable 98-73 shot victory and claim the trophy for the first time since 2005. Skipper, Dave Gilmore thanked all the teams present for the sporting way in which the matches were played and paid tribute to his team's success on the night. Association Chairman, Mike Costall thanked the host club, Royden Hall for their hospitality and reminded all present about the forthcoming Wallasey Individual Merit and Tony Vyskocil Memorial Competitions.

League Season finally completed

We just have 1 outstanding result sheet to come in but all the League matches have now been completed and considering some of the horrendous weather during the season, I would like to thank all our clubs for managing to re-arrange all the earlier postponed matches. In Division Two Marine Park have unfortunately joined Royden Hall at the bottom of the table to be relegated into Division Three next season. As you are no doubt aware Marine Park were involved in the tragic match against Hoylake Central last week and despite the knowledge that they still needed points to avoid relegation, the club have conceded the match to Hoylake Central with the score at 5 points to Hoylake Central and 1˝ points to Marine Park. Marine Park could not be persuaded to play the eight blocks still remaining to be completed and under the circumstances, should be applauded for their stance. We are after all just playing games at the end of the day and the tragic loss of life last week makes promotion or relegation seem meaningless at this time.

Sunday September 5th

Royden Hall win Wallasey News Cup

Royden Hall overcame the disappointment of finishing bottom of Division Two, with an excellent team performance and a 30 shot victory against Liscard in the Wallasey News Cup Final at the Gladstone Bowling Club last night. The tricky Gladstone green once again proved to be real test for all the bowlers and some long and tough matches meant the match finished in very near pitch black conditions. Royden Hall receive a 12 shot lead from the Liscard side that had finished 3rd in Division Two this season and quickly, or maybe not so quickly, increased their lead to 20 after the first four blocks. Royden Hall posting three winners to Dave Ratcliffe's sole 21-16 victory for Liscard. Tony Hughes 21-16, Ed Eaton 21-17 and Bobby Jamieson 21-17 all had tough wins to leave the score at 91-71 in Royden's favour after four blocks. Liscard bounced back in the middle four even though both teams had two winners each. John Leece and Peter Moorhouse both had hard fought 21-19 wins for Royden but excellent wins for Harry Timperley 21-11 and young Lee Abbott 21-07 saw Liscard tie the match up at 151 each after eight blocks. With darkness falling fast, Royden Hall had a decisive three winners in the back four with Dave Hazlehurst's 21-05 victory the best result of the night. Dennis Heenan also showed his talents have not faded with age with a commanding 21-08 win and Gerry Jones came from 01-11 down to post an impressive 21-17 winning card. Rod White confirmed his standing as one of the best players in Division Two with a tough 21-18 victory at number 12 but Royden winning score was eventually 232-202, a commanding if rather flattering scoreline considering the number of close matches in the Final. Congratulations to Royden Hall and commiserations to Liscard. A delighted Royden Hall Captain, Craig Nicoll received the Cup from Association Chairman Mike Costall after the match or at least I think that is what happened as it was so dark.
