Magazine Bowling Club
I have received the following bad news from Sam Robinson, Secretary of the Magazine Bowling Club.
Sorry to have to inform you that the Magazine Hotel has had a fire and is closed for the foreseeable future, consequently we have no electricity supply to the clubhouse so will be unable to supply our usual hospitality to visiting teams. I am sure that it will also be a great disappointment to many of you that the pub will be similarly compromised, hopefully all will soon be back to normal. During the problem, the entry to the green will be through the black gates to the left hand side of the pub as you face it, PLEASE BE CAREFUL AS THE STEPS ARE IRREGULAR.

Pre-Season Information
I would like to let you know about a few things that have happened over the winter months.
For the first time in quite a few years, we will be operating 3 Divisions of 11 teams per Division. Wallasey Royal British Legion have entered a C team in Division 3 and Sandridge have entered a B in Division 3. We have quite a few teams now who, for one reason or another have requested permission to play their home League matches on Wednesday nights. In Division 2, Royden Hall and Manor Road C will be playing their home matches on Wednesdays and in Division 3, Moreton R.B.L. B, Sacred Heart C, Sandridge B, and Wallasey Royal British Legion C team will be playing their home matches on Wednesdays. In the early stages of the season some League matches may clash with Wirral & District C.G.B.A. cup matches and if you need to re-arrange a league fixture, please keep our Fixture Secretary, Colin Jones fully advised of the details. The Association Cup will revert to its original straight knockout format this season, now that we have 11 teams again in Division 3.
Queens Royal B team will be playing their home League matches at Marine Park number 2 green this season and not at Harrison Park.
The Five A Side Cup competition this year will once again be held in August and September after the success of last seasons competition.
Thanks to the generosity of the Sacred Heart Club, we will once again be holding a Race Night to try and raise funds for our Association. As I mentioned at our A.G.M. without the proceeds of our Race Night and also our Raffles at Cup Finals, we would be operating at a loss every financial year. Any money we can raise during the season helps to keep our Leagues Fees down. The Race Night will be at the Sacred Heart Club on Friday May 7th and more details will be available early next month.
The Charity Day this year will be held on Sunday August 15th with Claire House being the 2010 beneficiaries. Tommy Walker (Sacred Heart) has also arranged an extra Charity Night for Claire House to be held at the Sacred Heart Club on Friday November 12th. I hope all our clubs will do their best to support both these events at the time. More details will be sent out to clubs nearer the time of the events.
The combined handbook (Wirral, Bebington & Wallasey) for 2010 has been printed by a different company this year and has increased sufficiently in size to allow us to include our Constitutional Laws in the book again.
All Cup matches scheduled to be played at Quarry Vikings Bowling Club this season will once again be played on the Lower Green up to the Semi Final stage, with any Semi Finals or Finals reverting to the Top Green.
Tuesday April 13th
Wirral & District C.G.B.A. Charity Handicap

Starred Players
The Executive Committee have decided to ask 4 clubs to change their starred player lists and the following alterations have been made to the published Starred Player list found on page 58 of the 2010 handbook.
Hoylake Central: R. Hall replaces R. Davies in the first ten starred players with R. Davies going into the brackets.
Marine Park: P.Bradford replaces V. Crighton
Sacred Heart: B. Smith has given an assurance to the Executive that he will not play in any Sacred Heart "C" team matches.

Wallasey win the "Colin Jones Challenge Cup"
After an excellent evening's bowling on the immaculate Upton Victory Hall green last night, Wallasey C.G.B.A. retained the Colin Jones Challenge Cup, with a 34 shot victory against the Wirral Ladies C.B.A. The match was played in an excellent spirit between two sides intent on giving nothing away to their opponents. The Ladies got off to the best possible start on the night, when Barbara McBurney and Naureen Bunting powered to an amazing 21-04 victory. Wallasey responded with six winning cards out of the next seven matches, Bill Astles and Curtis Tornerup being the best pairing with a fine 21-09 win. Jean Clark and Joan Walker seemed to be trying to outdo Barbara and Naureen, by building up a commanding 19-02 lead in their match against the father and son pairing of Allan and Mark Bainbridge but the family duo managed to bring the score back to 18-20, before the ladies gained the extra point required for victory. Wallasey won three of the last five games including a stunning 21-05 win for Brian Leonard and Anthony Thompson. The ladies responded with excellent 21-09 and 21-07 victories for Margaret Gard and Lynsey Gorman and Gaynor Greenfield and Karen Smith but with 9 winning cards to 4, Wallasey eventually triumphed 227-193. The 2 captains thanked the Upton Club and the referees and scorers and both teams in their after match speeches, with Chris Barton giving special thanks to Craig Saville and Geoff Lynch for turning up!! Both Pat Crowther and Mike Costall hoped that this event would become a permanent fixture in the bowling calendar and after the success of the first two fixtures, there is no reason to worry about the fixture not continuing.

Annual Challenge Match
Wirral Ladies C.B.A. will stage the Annual Challenge match against a select Wallasey C.G.B.A. side at Upton Victory Hall on Friday April 9th starting at 6-00pm. The Ladies will be all out for revenge after last season's narrow one shot loss to the Wallasey side. Spectators will be made very welcome at what we hope will be another exciting and entertaining evening. The selected teams can be seen below and hopefully the weather will be a little warmer and drier than of late.
Tuesday March 30th
Handbook Error
For some strange reason unbeknown to us, there has been an error on page 57 of the new Wirral Crown Green Handbook. The final pairing in the Harold Jones Cup First Round Draw should be Quarry Vikings v Manor Road "B" and not Sacred Heart v West Kirby Victoria as published in the handbook. If anyone comes across any more errors in the book, please do not hesitate to contact me. I just hope Paul Saville isn't up all night reading the new handbook now, he does like to be able point out an error or two.
Friday March 26th

The meeting aims to be informative but not dull and will also help people to understand the reasons behind the laws i.e. the spirit of the game. All are welcome and it is free. Any enquiries to Syd Taylor 327 3536 or Mavis Dearden.

Sad news from Harrison Park
I am sorry to inform you that Harrison Park bowler Dennis Robinson passed away
this morning. As most of you know he suffered a brain tumour just as last season
began and underwent surgery and Chemo - therapy. He was determined to overcome
this trauma and get back onto the green again, but sadly it wasn't to be. He
will be sadly missed by all at Harrison Park and the Wirral and Wallasey bowling
community and our thoughts go to his wife, daughters and grandchildren. I will
post funeral details as soon as possible.
