Magazine Charity Pairs
Once again Magazine Bowling Club excelled themselves with a magnificent day at their Annual Charity Day held in early June and I am pleased to report the following courtesy of Sam Robinson, organiser of this wonderful event.
Presentation of the proceeds was made on Saturday 26th July to The Wirral Society of the Blind and Partially Sighted at the Magazine Bowling Club on the Ladies Day. The fantastic sum of £800 was made even more magnificent by the Magacharity (the Magazine Pubs fund raising committee) matching the amount to make a grand total of £1600. Many thanks to all the bowlers who participated on the day and also the customers of the Magazine Pub who contributed to the Magacharity fund. The winners of the Charity Pairs were Gill Smith and Jean Clark from Lairds Ladies and runners up were Sandra Astles and Ellen Leverton also from Lairds Ladies. What a triumph for the ladies!!!

Allan Bainbridge wins the Tony Vyskocil 31 UP Memorial Trophy.
After an excellent afternoon's bowling by all eight competitors, in baking hot conditions, Allan Bainbridge proved to be just too good on the day and deservedly became the 2008 winner of the Tony Vyskocil 31 Up Memorial Trophy after a rather one sided 31-10 victory over Brian Leonard in the Final. On a wonderful and slick Manor Road green, Allan had to pull out all the stops to beat Paul Saville in his Quarter Final match. In a match full of high class bowling from both players, Allan forged into an early 15-06 lead only to see Paul go in front 16-15 after some stunning woods The match was nip and tuck all the way after that with the players level at 19-19, 28-28 and finally 30 across before Paul was lying game having played his last wood a yard to the right of the jack. Allan played through with a touch of pace and somewhat fortunately glanced Paul's counting wood away from the jack to claim a memorable 31-30 victory. Brian Leonard had produced a scintillating performance to defeat Peter Holian 31-18 in his quarter final match, with some tremendous woods up and down the centre of the green. A run of 12 from 6 across saw Brian into an 18-06 lead Peter couldn't peg back. The other two quarter finals saw Nick Burridge overcome Mike Nelson 31-24 after at one stage being only 23-21 up and Dave Gilmore defeated Chris Morrison 31-21after some fine bowling across the middle of the green by both players. This match was 18 across at one time before Dave finally pulled away at the end. The semi finals saw Allan Bainbridge involved in another high class match, this time against Nick Burridge. This match saw the lead change many times before a burst from Allan at 22 across saw him create a vital 7 point gap at 30-23 and eventually run out a 31-25 winner. Brian Leonard bowled superbly again in his semi final against Dave Gilmore to post a 22-07 lead before Dave's experience saw him move Brian around the green and tie the match at 27 across. A loose lead from Dave at the bottom end of the green saw Brian pounce and run out a 31-27 winner after yet another excellent match. The Final saw Allan Bainbridge's knowledge of his home green come to the fore and Brian was always struggling to come to terms with Allan's fine bowling from side to side on the fast green and unfortunately Brian had no answer in the end and succumbed 31-10 to the jubilant winner. Tony Vyskocil's parents were there to present the trophy to Allan after an excellent afternoon's bowling all-round. Special thanks must go to our Referee for the afternoon, Peter Fishwick and his wife Mary, for doing the measuring, with both Peter and Mary volunteering to help out this afternoon without payment. Keith Etches was thanked for the the hard work he had put in to organise the competition and the Green Keeper. Colin Jones, was thanked for producing such an excellent playing surface for the Finals. Association Chairman, Mike Costall also thanked the Manor Road Club for the use of the facilities for the three weekends of competition.

Manor Road "B" fly the flag for Wallasey in Wirral & District C.G.B.A., Graham White Cup Final
Manor Road "B" beat Tixall "B" by 15 shots tonight, in the Wirral & District C.G.B.A. Graham White Cup Final at the excellent Heswall R.B.L. green. Receiving 12 shots from Tixall's as holders of the Trophy and despite three winners in the first four blocks, Sandra Astles and Alf Pennington 21-17 and Nobby Clark 21-16, Manor had only increased the lead to 14 with the middle four on. Keith Etches 21-07 and Peter Bond 21-10 handed in excellent winning cards to counteract the two Tixall winners and after eight blocks Manor Road "B" had increased the lead to 26 shots. Ray Woods and Peter Dodd both produced fine 21-12 victories for Manor in the back four and despite two clear winners for Tixall, Manor Road "B" eventually ran out deserved winners 211-196 and 7 winners to 5. Wirral & District C.G.B.A. President, John Griffiths presented the Cup to Manor Road "B" Captain, Mike Costall after thanking both teams for the sporting way in which the match was played.

British Parks Senior County Championship.
Wallasey C.G.B.A. lost their final match in the 2008 British Parks Senior County Championship, Division One this afternoon 22-09 to Greater Manchester. The heavy rain showers over the last week did Wallasey no favours as both the excellent Hoylake Central and South Manchester R.B.L. greens were extremely heavy. In the away leg at South Manchester, Wallasey had only a single winner to show for their efforts despite some fine bowling from the team, The score lines did not do justice to some fine performances on the huge green. John Lloyd was the sole winner with an excellent 21-13 winning performance. Jamie Fitzpatrick, Les Henderson and Paul Saville all bowled well but just fell short at the end and the 13-01 score flattered a good Greater Manchester team. In the home leg at Hoylake Central, the winners were shared 6 each but with just a little more luck at crucial stages it could easily have been 10 winners for Wallasey. Bill Atkinson was the best of the home bowlers with a brilliant 21-07 winning display and equally good 21-11 winning cards were posted by Steve Scott and Anthony Thompson. Matt Gilmore weighed in with a fine 21-14 victory followed by Geoff Lynch's good 21-16 victory. Allan Bainbridge was involved in a tremendous tussle before finally triumphing 21-20 and with just a little more rub of the green, the two 19-21 cards from Peter Birch and Bill Astles and the two 20-21 cards from Ian Sherbrooke and Dave Gilmore (at one stage 03-16 down) could have gone Wallasey's way. The home team won 8-6 after winning the aggregate score 235-205.

Sandridge win Sheppick Cup Final
Sandridge beat Wallasey R.B.L. by 15 shots in tonight's Sheppick Cup Final at the excellent Quarry Vikings green at New Brighton Cricket and Bowling Club. Division Two leaders Sandridge had to concede 36 shots to Wallasey R.B.L. thanks to the handicappers but with 3 winners in the first four blocks including 21-08 wins for Ian Cook and Paul Gartland, Sandridge set about the task of retrieving the deficit from the off. Steve Lyons at number 1 had a more difficult 21-17 win that was cancelled out by a 21-17 victory for the Legion from Colin Watterson. Sandridge had a clean sweep of winners in the middle four to forge a 31 shot lead after 8 blocks with Roy Cooper leading the way with another 21-08 win backed up by a fine display from Barbara McBurney, who won 21-10. Andy Wainwright 21-12 and Naureen Bunting 21-13 completed the middle four domination for Sandridge who must have thought the trophy was won. The Legion had other ideas though and with 3 winners in the back four, staged a spirited if fruitless fight back. Brian Daugherty 21-11, Ernie Jameson 21-14 and Les Richards 21-15 all bowled well in excellent wins for the Legion and Phil Taylor's 21-14 win for Sandridge was more than welcome for his worried team mates and helped seal a 225-210 deserved victory in the end for "The Ridge". Association Chairman, Mike Costall thanked the two teams for a final played in an excellent spirit throughout and along with Association President, Keith Etches, presented the Cup to the Sandridge Skipper, Barry Nixon. A nice touch at the end of the proceedings were the two speeches from Rick Keeley, Sandridge and Ernie Jameson, Wallasey R.B.L. who both commented on the sportsmanship displayed by both teams during an excellent night's entertainment.

Queen's "Ecstatic", Victoria "Not amused", as Royal take Harold Jones Cup again
Queens Royal "A" team upset the form book again tonight with an excellent performance against West Kirby Victoria, to once again win the Harold Jones Cup Final. Royal were easily the better side on the night with 8 winners to West Kirby's 4 and the overall 27 shot winning margin was beginning to emerge early with Queens Royal taking 3 of the first 4 blocks and 6 of the first 8. Despite each side having 2 winners in the back 4, the damage to West Kirby Victoria's chances had already been done. Peter Milnes (21-16), Les Henderson (21-18) and Craig Saville 21-16 set Queens Royal onto the winning road with only Neil Sherbrooke (21-16) managing to stem the flow of Royal winners. Peter Milnes, at one time 02-09 down battled back to 10-12 before having a run of nine on the trot to lead 19-12 and then eventually winning 21-16. This was a sign of things to come as Royal battled for every point in every game. Les Henderson was another to overcome an early deficit of 04-11 before finally coming through a 21-18 winner. Craig Saville was nip and tuck all the way until he found himself 14-16 down but once again a run of 7 saw him triumph 21-16. Neil Sherbrooke for West Kirby Victoria, showed his fighting qualities coming from 07-15 down to post a terrific 21-17 winning card. After all this Queens Royal "A" found themselves 9 up after 4 blocks. The middle 4 blocks sealed West Kirby Victoria's fate with Geoff Lynch and Owen Doyle both winning 21-11 and Colin Saville producing possibly the result of the night with an excellent 21-13 win. Both Geoff Lynch and Owen Doyle forged early leads and never lost control of their matches and Colin Saville at one time only 09-08 up powered away at the end to produce his 21-13 victory. Dave Gilmore, despite losing the first 3 ends, rolled back the years to finish an excellent 21-11 winner for West Kirby. Queens Royal "A" however had forged a 27 point lead after 8 blocks, seeing them on the road to their 2nd Harold Jones Final win in succession against West Kirby Victoria. The last 4 blocks on the green saw some terrific bowls by all four players with some brilliant firing as well as top class draws against the odds. Chris Barton and Paul Saville were always in control of their games with 21-11 and 21-12 wins respectively with Matt Gilmore and Robby Hall doing the same for West Kirby Victoria in 21-13 and 21-10 wins respectively. All in all this was an excellent evenings bowling for the large crowd to enjoy and a delighted Queens Royal Skipper, Mike Nelson collected the trophy from Association President, Keith Etches.

Harold Jones Cup Final Teams
After numerous requests from both teams I have decided to release the line-up for Saturday's forthcoming Harold Jones Cup Final. Greasby Win Association Cup
The 2008 Divisional Cup Final season got underway tonight with Greasby winning the Association Cup (Division Three) against a game and sporting Sacred Heart "C" side. The handicappers saw fit to give Sacred Heart "C" a 21 point start in the final, played at the superb Manor Road green, and after 8 blocks it seemed the handicappers had got things right as the scores stood level at 153 shots each but unfortunately for Sacred Heart "C", Greasby had a strong back four that forged a 46 shot winning margin for them 237 - 191. Terry Bates bowled brilliantly for Sacred Heart "C" at number one with an excellent 21-08 winning card and with Greasby's Brian Bird and Gordon Murray having to settle for 21-20 winning cards in tight matches and Sacred Heart's Jack Cox winning 21-19 things looked to be bubbling along nicely for a tight finish despite Greasby having 6 winners to 2, Larry Baker standing out with a splendid 21-06 victory, in the first eight. Greasby then rolled out the big hitters in their line up with the two youngsters in their side, Terry Hurworth (21-04) and Barry Smith (21-02) proving much too strong for their opponents in clinical winning displays. Dave Smith (21-13) and Eric Davies (21-19) gave Greasby a clean sweep of back four winners and the trophy deservedly went to the Greasby side. Association President, Keith Etches praised the sportsmanship and spirit of both sides and commiserated with the gallant losers before presenting the trophy to the Greasby Captain, Tom O'Hanlon.

2008 Wallasey C.G.B.A. Individual Merit Competition
Incredibly, the Premier Wallasey C.G.B.A. Individual Competition, the Individual Merit, has attracted a mere 19 entries for next Monday's (July 7th) qualifying night. At tonight's Executive Committee meeting it was decided that, rather than cancel this event, as our rules now state that we should have a minimum of 32 entries to run a competition, we would re-open the competition for entries and the competition will now become a one day event on Sunday August 31st starting at 11-00am. I will be writing to all the clubs in the League trying to promote the competition and attract more entries. The Wallasey Individual Merit was first played in 1912 and after 96 years it would be criminal to cancel an event only previously cancelled because of World Wars. The competition will hopefully be held on the two greens at Marine Park, which I am happy to say have been returned to something like their best condition of a few years back, thanks to the help of the new permanent green keeper.
